Strong contender for best game of this console generation.

I redboxed it and beat the first major dungeon. Absolutely a contender, from what I've played but I'd have to finish it to make an accurate judgement.

Probably the best JRPG in a VERY long time.

It just gets better and more deep as it goes. Witcher 3 is the only thing that ranks up there for me. WRPG vs JRPG for the title

It's fantastic, but the only bummer is that story and character wise, it doesn't live up to the highs of 4. Which is a shame, because the combat system is in the best place it's ever been along with the dungeons being designed instead of generated.

Could have dine without Mementos too. As well as the daily text messages, especially once you've beaten a dungeon "Hey, do you think his heart will change?!" Every day. I think it is 50 hours of greatness stretched out to be 90-100 hours.

Morgona telling me to go to bed instead of working out/crafting is my only gripe...love the characters though. All the standard Shonen tropes that i want from a hjghschool anime.

Would I be lost story-wise playing this without playing the others?

Oh yeah, I still love them. They're just not Persona 4's characters that were just a slight level above.

Nah, think of the games like Final Fantasy where there's little nods to the other games, but it's a whole new setting and story.

Horizon just barely eeks out witcher 3 for me. But a lot of that has to do with my personal preference of horizon's ranged combat system.

If I had to choose one though, it would be Tae Takemi. Punk rock doctor is just....yeaaaaaaaaah. Plus she experiments on me at work. Can only imagine what she's gonna do to me in the attic.

I haven't been able to play much the last couple days. Too much work to do. Gonna try and finish up palace 4 tomorrow.

Its really good. Post palace 4 i got the STM accessories...went through mementos...they kinda break the game.

Oh yeah, those. I got one before the 3rd palace and another before the 4th. They definitely make things much easier, especially once you find which enemies to sleep on, like the high pixies in palace 3.

The thiefs in palace 4...ones with the moon heads and the loot over their shoudlers...

I'm abusing the SP accessories in an attempt to farm the mats necessary for the unbreakable lockpick in Palace 4. Getting the aluminum sheets at a good clip....no luck on the liquid metals though. Anubis is a stingy with the liquid metal.

They spawn in the last 3 floorsof the next section of momentos as well if you need to keep farming

Don't know when I'll actually go to mementos again tbh, I try to wait until I have a bunch of requests built up so I waste as little time as possible in there. Unless the requests start pouring in I could easily see it being like a month of in game time before I make another trip. I didn't take my first full trip into their until after palace 3, so some time in July. And I'm working through Palace 4 as we speak on July 31st.

I'd get in there when you've got some that block social links and clear a bunch if them out when you can.

I FINALLY had the time to finish the initial run-through of Palace 4. However I am sticking around a bit to grind up some more yen and maybe actually get the mats for an eternal lockpick. Surprisingly I ended up with half the required liquid mercury on my first initial trek through the place, and just under half the required aluminum sheets. Figure I might stick around and get up to level 37 so I can go ahead and capture the LVL36 Baboon and LVL 37 Anubis enemies.

I hung around the other palaces long enough to capture all of their personas, save maybe 1, but I'm not sure that one was catchable anyways.

Off-topic a bit:

This game is QUICKLY moving up my all-time list, that's for sure. I love it. Can't get enough. I feel like I may end up putting more time into a single playthrough of this game than any other, save maybe The Witcher 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii. Speaking of which, stoked for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Got my son a switch for Christmas...but hey, added benefits for me with that release lol. It's kinda funny I've had this switch sitting in the closet for like 2 months now, along with Mario+Rabbids and have Odyssey ordered already, and my son is constantly BEGGING for a switch and doesn't think he's getting one. Hope he doesn't chance across it being nosy like kids tend to be; he'd probably open it and start playing it lol.

I maxed the politician so i dont have a level cap on personas now. Totally worth it.
When this gen is over i think there will be a huge library of quality rpgs for the switch. Im pretty excited for the potential it has.

So I'm done grinding the Futaba palace first run. Captured Anubis and Thoth. Got 12 liquid mercury....and only 10 aluminum sheets. UHG. Can't really fight the Anzu enemies that drop aluminum now as I am overleveled and instakill thanks to ryuji and don't feel like starting every battle without an ambush, thus wasting time and resources. Kinda sad :(

Oh well, I'll get the goods in mementos later I suppose. Really wanted that eternal lockpick, though lol.

Yeah but if you don't ambush them and you happen to pull an Anubis he will get multiple hit-all and/or insta-kill moves in before you can kill him. I've gotten frustrated af a couple times when I hadn't saved for a little while I was farming the stuff only to have an Anubis target Joker with instakill moves. Once he targeted me, missed, then immediately targeted me with a different instakill and landed it -_-'

In a game where your main character dying is automatic game over, having instakills is definite wekasauce.

Doesn't matter anyways, I moved on from that palace now. I'm in early September, right before the school trip. Ended up with 16 liquid mercury and 12 Aluminum (used some in a different craft I was knocking out for progress on the crafting trophy). I'm going to make another trip into mementos in the next couple of in-game days, before the trip, and I will just farm a bunch of aluminum from the random drops on the ground in the new area by continually reloading whichever zone I happen to find one in first. Also hoping to go ahead and knock the red phosphorous requirement out at the same time, too, as they are super rare and I already managed to get like 5 of those from Palace 4.

Meanwhile max rank Ryuji repeatedly survives instakills with 1hp lol

Dunno if you watch any anime but I have noticed a distinct similarity between Persona 5 and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. In the anime all of the main characters, good and bad, are tied to the different tarot cards like Sun/Star/Hanged Man/Emperor, etc, and their powers are this invisible creatures that stand behind them and attack for them and can't be seen by normies. Several of the bad guys in the anime are converted to the good side by removing a small parasite from their forehead that changes their cognition. Also in the overall JoJo narrative, the magic power they all have comes from an energy called Hamoan, which is a bless instakill move in P5. Kinda weird how much they align.

Another excellent reference in P5 I noticed was when Yusuke rearranges Futabas rip-off power rangers action figures into the Ginyu Force pose from Dragon Ball Z, and then the next question you get when school is available after the break is about King Kamehameha and what he is holding in his hand in a statue of him and one of the answers is "A Dragon Ball".

Equip Joker with your own Anubis and you'll be immune to bnoth curse and bless instakills... I keep atleast one persona in my party with NUL to both just incase I hit an insta kill heavy area.

Tons of subtle refferences in the game; tons more Im sure that are lost on wetsern audiences.

Convenient -_- I quit farming when I caught the Anubis LOL then had to ditch him in favor of my confidant link spamming lineup of personas for the next month+ of social interactions without a palace.

Lol there are a few options other than him but you can just buy one from the velvet room

Oh yeah, I know I can summon another one, I just don't have the space for him right now. I'll max a couple more confidants soon, probably Yusuke and Miss Teacher Lady and won't need to carry an affiliated persona at that point so I'll have more free spots.

Trying to be efficient with my money atm, don't want to overly waste on summons if I don't have to.

Also tend to leave one spot open so when I run through mementos and instakill everything, I always automatically get the persona from that potential battle. Then I just go into the menu and discard it to free the slot up again. They are always available in the velvet room once caught, after all, unless you catch them while in a battle and immediately discard them due to lack of space; then you don't get credit at all.

I'm on the day before we fly out to Hawaii now, have made my way all the way down to the bottom of Mementos, done all the requests other than the cheating gamer one that you can't do the first time through, got the aluminum for my eternal lockpick, pretty sure I have all the personas available from mementos thus far, and I'm sitting on a cool million yen. Also up to level 41. Feel pretty good about my current situation. About to go dick around with the velvet room and progress with the twins a bit now, then prob grind back to a million loots. Still want more aluminum so I can go ahead and craft everything for the trophy other than the one requiring red phosphorus. I'll get those in time.

Also, I did get the politician up to rank 10. USEFUL ability that gives you. Does it work when fusing though? Doesn't seem like it will as the twins warn me about destruction and the result preview is still blacked out. Don't want to waste on a fusion that won't work.

Affinity reading every day for whoever you need to progress is such a time saver. Luck reading for extra stat boosts. Money reading before you go into a palace/mementos....she has so many useful abilities. Forget what it's called but that other ability she has where she tells you what abilities a confidant has is kind of useless, though, considering the internetz.

Thanks, feel much better about not going for that now. Was so tempted to fuse up a Seth last night when I had the ability to.

I've made it up to the second palace and :love: this already. I am definitely not managing my time well though, I didn't know about the calling cards so I wasted a day just going from the throne room safe zone to the treasury. My social link is mostly still 1s and I have an overdue copy of Not The X Files that I haven't been able to return in two weeks because of exams, which I think I did really badly on because I studied an entire one time the night before. Ah, life.

I have not done anything with the fortune teller since the first rank... i will work on this

I've already almost maxed my social stats. Got 5 charm, 4 everything else, but feel pretty close to hitting 5 on a couple of those. Luck readings for extra stat points ftw.

Tower confidant is good stuff all around.

I feel like Kindness takes the absolute longest amount of time. Feel like knowledge or proficiency will be my next to hit 5. Guts will prob be last at this rate, kinda have slacked off on it since I got to dauntless and made friends with the weapons dealer.

Ah indeed. I'm still mid-September. Work obligations keeping me from enjoying my damn game lately. And my incessant need to grind also makes things take longer than necessary. In my mementos run the day before the Hawaii trip I ended up getting the twins all the way up to rank 8, left with 1.2 million yen, about 3-400k in treasures to sell, and had everyone other than Futaba at level 42+

What can I say, unlike most people, I enjoy grinding. When I set my grinding goal and then finally achieve it I feel like a freaking star.

Also, don't know if you are aware, but the confusion money trick everyone talks about on the interwebs works both ways. I haven't used it at all, but I had an enemy confuse Yusuke and he threw 57k Yen at them the next turn. I almost threw my controller through the TV out of shock/frustration.

I love grinding, I just havent felt compelled to grind levels for some reason. doesnt seem to play a big role in the combat really..60+ though. WIll prob finish the game in the 70s


The twins Ive stopped leveling. I missed a persona I need to craft one of theri requests (tier 6 I think) and im not using any online guides so I cant be arsed to go and hunt down every floor of momentos hoping to get lucky...

:O You NEED the twins level 10 ability. Allows you to fuse persona of any level above yours, for a price of course.

I gotta catch them all.

I remember 2 of my earliest super grind campaigns quite fondly.

I grinded out to level 99 in Chrono Trigger. That was the first. Just kept running through the Black Omen over and over and over again in one particular area until YAAAAS 99!!!~~~

The second, and probably most useful super grind I swear by, is grinding out enough levels early on in Final Fantasy 7 so that Barrett with a fire resist ring can somehow survive the Midgar Zolom's beta attack the first time you try to cross the swamp. Equip enemy skill material on him, suck that attack up, then escape and RRRUUUUNNNNNN. Heal up. You now have a single attack that carry you through like 2/3 of the game.

Just discovered the 3rd palace, feeling a lot better about my social link. Guts seem to be a priority stat though and I'm nowhere near where I feel I need to be on that. Still returning DVDs late but they always waive the fee. Is it actually possible to get billed for a late return?

I only rented 1 dvd because i was so late bringing it back lol

And i think all social stats are important. Youll need each maxed to max all confidants. Its when to max them thats the question...hard to pin that down on the first play through...kindness is def the hardest to max though imo.

Yeah I'm currently locked out of two confidants due to guts, one of them has been locked for a whole palace. I guess I mean it's a priority right now and kindness or intelligence will screw me over later. Made a bunch of lockpicks in the downtime because Ive been very inefficient with locked chests so my proficiency is alright at the very least.

Ryuiji and the gun shot if memory serves...think was palace 4 beofre i got the gun shop. Youve gotta have rank 4 for that. Tall order.

Gun Shop and Kawakami. I'm Rank 4 Ryuji and Rank 3 Ann, neither of them have locked me out yet (well, at least after Ann's initial unlock requirement).

Gun shop is Rank 4 Guts!? Fucking hell, I'd better get on those Big Bang Burgers and refillable coffees.

Kawakami is worth doing. Earlier the better. Gun shop is the most meh of them all imo...

Gun shop requires Rank 5 guts later on, Sojiro requires Rank 5 Kindness, the Shogi player requires rank 5 knowledge I think, Makota requires Rank 5 charm, can't remember who requires 5 proficiency. I've got all to 5 except guts at this point and it should be any day now.

I'm finished with Palace 5 other than the beating down the boss and stealing his lewt. Saved at the beginning of said palace right now on my way to take him out. Gonna run through and pick up some respawned treasures until I can catch one the jewel personas from there as it is the only one I didn't catch the first time I around. Kind of annoying, but the one time I managed to down one I forgot to catch it and went all out instead and killed it -_-'

Hate enemies whos only weakness is critical hit; so hard to get miracle punch to connect with any reliability.

Ive got rebellion on the same persona that has miracle punch +the passive that raises crit odds. 65% success rate for me.

I should probably be messing with fusion more but I am holding out for like 2 more in game weeks. I am extremely close to being able to do rank 9 and 10 of the twins (need to gain 2 more levels for rank 9, 4 for rank 10) and then I can fuse any persona I want other than the few still locked by confidants and the NG+ specific one. Saving up all my money because I imagine some of these fusions I am going to pull off are going to be hella expensive. Especially considering I plan on itemizing several of the high level ones and then prob have to summon a couple of them again for my line up.

The first mini-boss in this game is basically a bellend. I don't think anything tops the Immoral beast from Catherine though.

Love Catherine, I even got the costume DLC and have had Morgana dressed as a sheep for my entire playthrough. Joker in the Vincent costume changes the battle theme so I use that too every now and then.

Just broke up for Summer and it's great how they have crafted the world so all these background events that seem ambient or side story end up in the main plot. So well done.

And yeah this game has no wasted motion. Everything is deliberate and pays off well. Ots very clever writing. Majoras mask might be the last time i played a game that felt this well thought out.

Reporters perks and EASILY the worst...but the charm is GREAT so theres a trade off

WHOOOOO I am prepared enough to get the twins to rank 10 and be able to go on a fusion spree. Just need to get Yusuke to make a copy of the high counter card before I use it on a persona the twins want.

Then I have 2 million+ yen to spend fusing an army of mass murder before I even go on the run through palace 6.

I'm level 51 currently and fully intend to create personas in the 80's and 90's with this ASAP. Might even have to take in a wheelchair penis.

Just entered the sixth palace, and wow shit's going down. My socials are all 4s, I've got a couple of confidants to 10 (Kawakami & Tora) and a bunch of 8/9s but I'm going to have a considerably rougher time than Seph here for sure.

tons of mobs weak to curse and holy in palace 6.
