Pacman turns 30 today. Wacca wacca wacca and all that. I actually thought Pacman was kinda stupid when I was a kid, but I 'got it' only a couple years. Long live Pacman.

The 'HD Remix' Championship version on XBLA is great fun, btw.

PapaGeorgio 05-22-2010 05:08 PM

google.com has a fun little Pacman game going on for the weekend apparently. Just insert a coin and enjoy.

Kalyx triaD 05-22-2010 05:09 PM

Yeah that's the coolest thing Google ever did.

OssMan 05-22-2010 05:19 PM

In a fitting crossover of sorts, LittleBigPlanet's Sackboy will be available for ModNation Racers as a pre-order deal. MNR is under Sony's 'Play Create Share' brand headlined by last year's LittleBigPlanet.

Annnnnnd $ony is hit with a fourth class action lawsuit concerning the removal of the 'Other OS' feature. Sony removed it on... um... April 1st, but the process was optional. Well... as optional as 'serve God or go to a lake of eternal fire' is optional. People who turned down the update would have their console denied from online features, namely online multiplayer [note it does not 'brick' the console, which I find will be an important factor in a case].

If history serves, Sony is going to pwn these guys with the revelation of but a few lines in the TOS document. READ THEM PEOPLE

Papers, baby.

Beat Parasite Eve 2 yesterday. Terrible game. Well not that bad, but so much worse than the first. Pretty frustrating all around. But not as frustrating as the end of Parasite Eve. Now to finish Valkyrie Profile and do about 40 hours of grinding in Star Ocean 2 to beat the final boss.

Kalyx triaD 05-22-2010 11:37 PM

I was recently thinking about PE and that they should make a fourth game already.

Of course, some people might argue that a ToS does not protect them from this claim. You know, people who understand the limitations imposed on such Terms of Use by the law.

If they bring back the RPG elements that the first one had then sure, but if they are going to continue the Resident Evil style of gameplay that they used for Parasite Eve 2 then forget it.

Yup, just see how the FCC ruled that Comcast's throttling of Torrents was illegal, even though their own ToS would have allowed them.

I'm hoping a big case at some point makes restrictive ToS's and EULA's pointless, but I doubt that will happen.

Yeah, I doubt it too. Individual EULAs and ToSes have been struck down, and courts have rule on a few provisions companies can't write off and individuals can't sign off on, but I doubt we'll get a major, widespread ruling any time soon. If ever.

Regrettably, corporations have more rights than individuals.

Kalyx triaD 05-23-2010 02:45 PM

And they are individuals according to our old wise men. But that's another blunder.

Mass Effect Film Rights Taken:

Legendary Pictures, the production company behind blockbuster films like 300 and Clash of the Titans, has picked up the film rights for the Mass Effect franchise. This doesn't mean a movie is going into production any time soon, but now you know. Legendary is the business so fans should feel good about that much.

Kane Knight 05-25-2010 09:20 AM

Kalyx triaD 05-25-2010 09:23 AM

Yes.

David "Solid Snake" Hayter on Videogame Movies:

Quote:

"When we were... adapting X-Men, the first X-Men, [the studio] kept saying, 'Why is it so serious? Why are these people so serious?' It's like, 'Well... it's life and death, and the world hates them and [everyone is] trying to kill them, so you'd be serious too. So I think there is a huge element of studio executives seeing the value and the numbers that the video games sell in but [they] don't really appreciate how elevated that medium has become, and how far beyond studio movies video games have become."

"If you don't take the source material seriously, then you're never going to adapt it well. And you're certainly never going to adapt it to the standards of video game fans, who are pretty exacting and have come to expect a pretty serious product when they put down their money."

According to Hayter, it will take a few X-Men or Iron Man quality blockbuster films. "And suddenly you will be getting better quality in terms of the writing and the directors that come on board these things. I just think there's still a subtle prejudice with them that has to be gotten around."
With Hayter working on an adaption of Lost Planet (and having a complete Metal Gear Solid script Konami doesn't wanna read), Hayter may be the guy who gives the sub-genre the kick in the ass... sort of like when he did it X-Men (he also wrote Watchmen).

I have my own theories on why videogame movies will never be critically accepted by general movie goers or gamers (and exceptions like Mortal Kombat has factors that support my views), but I would like to see future attempts try to crack the 'code'.

Good

Kalyx triaD 05-26-2010 07:07 AM

You do realize Hayter is a good writer? And is intimately knowledgeable about MSG for obvious reasons? I can't imagine anyone else writing it, imo.

I mean how did you feel about MGS4? You realize he and this other dude (forgot his name but he was a great help) had some doing with the dialogue?

Kane Knight 05-26-2010 08:26 AM

Why would you need a movie version of what is already effectively an interactive movie?

RoXer 05-26-2010 08:39 AM

I don't see myself feeling as drawn in about the characters/story in a 90 minute movie as I did over 4+ games.

There is just no way he can condense all of that story and still make it effective in a movie. None.

RoXer 05-26-2010 08:40 AM

An expensive HBO miniseries I am all for, however.

A la "Band of Brothers" or "The Pacific"

Kane Knight 05-26-2010 08:44 AM

Yeah, maybe Tom Hanks could give some life to those flat characters.

No need, only the want. I want this to go down. The franchise doesn't need anything like this but how about... Expand recognition? Invite a broader audience to the world of Metal Gear? Condense the mythology into an accessible movie experience? General reasons for adaptions like these. The boon is you somebody who gives a damn, and many of these videogame movies don't even have that going in.

I mean, you're documented being critical of the series to begin with (like just now) - I'd think you'd appreciate an attempt to... 'localize' it in a sense, as Kojima's quirks would most likely be regulated to quick fanservice while the broader (western friendly) themes such as patriotism, lone heroism, action (stealth and/or balls out), nuclear threats, and conspiracies would be expanded. Your gripes about the series would surely be toned down for a western audience.

Which is why you don't try that. Did they cram Resident Evil 1-3 in the first movie? Which videogame movie tried that? None. Why? Because it's silly. Of course they'd go either one game at a time or better yet craft a different continuity altogether.

RoXer 05-26-2010 09:19 AM

Well yeah a trilogy would be ideal but the invent of sequels would rely on the first movie not tanking.

Obv, its impossible to condense the 4+ games into a 90 minute film.

Condensing the Twin Snakes story into a 90 minute film? A bit more possible. But still

Kane Knight 05-26-2010 09:20 AM

So put it on Fox to replace 24?

Kalyx triaD 05-27-2010 12:41 AM

Aye. Or maybe Team Sonic wanna add another poor Sonic concept in the fold.

Drakul 05-27-2010 01:01 AM

Sonic 4 is coming out on WiiWare as well as XBLA, PSN and the iPhone, according to the Sonic 4 website.

So it's not a replacement for Sonic 4 on Wii. We'll likely get a full trailer at E3.

Did not know that since the whole initial preview was about it being done in HD although now looking back it probably was because most videos and pictures shown on websites were from the Xbox 360/PS3 builds.

Nexon, the company that releases those free-to-play games none of us any interest in...

Raked in 575.54 million dollars for 2009. That's a 50% increase from the year before. Now that's chump change to your Activisions and EAs, but a 50% increase in revenue is nothing to scoff at. This will lead to growth of course, so it'll be interesting to see what they do going forward.

I have a vested interest in their model.

In other news, a rumour is going around that we could see Perfect Dark 2 in 2011.

Perfect Dark 2? Rare could really bolster interest with a Perfect Dark 2/Killer Instinct 3 joint reveal.

Funky Fly 05-31-2010 05:19 AM

As long as Perfect Dark 2 is more Perfect Dark and less Perfect Dark Zero, I'm on board. Also, KI3 would need a serious overhaul to the engine not to end up in Mortal Kombat status (a joke).

Drakul 06-02-2010 02:40 AM

Dunno where to put this. I didn't want to bump Cloxs "Sims 3 is the Best" thread. The Sims 3 is going to be bigger on the PS3 than it was on the PC according to some Russian Sims site. I'm guessing that'll mean the same for the 360.

We'll get official details at E3, I'm sure. Speaking of E3, I saw a German video of Natal. The Breakout game had new avatars. They looked more "realistic" than the current Avatars but not as "realistic" as the avatars from Home.
My first thought was maybe a revamping of Avatars announced at E3? It's more likely to be models just loaded into the breakout game, I guess.

Actually, going to go get the video.
This isn't the video I originally saw but it's a better one. We see the avatars through out the video and at 3:03 there is a screen that says "Avatar selection" with the two new models, Boy and Girl. Considering Natal was supposed to be able to know if you are male/female just by looking at you, why are they selecting Avatars?

Activision has announced the first Activision Independent Game Competition, in which the publisher is putting a call out for submissions from indie game developers in the United States.

The contest will allow either individuals or teams to submit either completed or in-development games, the winners taking home cash towards development as prizes. Round one of the competition starts today, and goes through August 31; the first place winner will get $175,000 towards development of their title, with the second place getting $75,000 in assistance. Winners will be announced in October, with details on "round two" being announced at a later date.

The idea, says the publisher, is to "help foster creativity and innovation from rising talent in the independent game development community."

Last time we saw Microsoft's Project Natal in the wild, the prototype version of its Xbox 360 camera-controller was a mix of cute and creepy. Now, it's looking a hell of a lot more final.

Engadget snapped a gallery's worth of pics of the Natal accessory in use at All Things Digital, the Wall Street Journal's annual tech conference. It's labeled a "development sample," so don't count on this being the final final version of the Xbox 360's move into the motion control space. Wait for E3.

A Natal Sonic game. Sega wastes no time. At an XBLA price it's probably worth the dev time. In fact if Natal's shovelware were to be regulated to arcade titles it could be better.

I think that door was already opened. Considering I've owned one for a year or two now. Yeah, I know, it's "ugly," but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

There's also a shotgun, a hunting rifle (complete with fake scope), and a lightsaber.

Unless you're talking daily DLC, you're bullshitting again, Pete.

Contra + Blazeblue =:

In a random collaboration, Konami has enlisted Blazeblue/Guilty Gear developers ArkSys (Ark Systems) to create a spiritual sequel to their Contra series called Hard Corps: Uprising. It will feature classic Contra gameplay/difficulty and ArkSys' trademark high quality sprites. I suppose Konami had them create a new IP instead of calling it Contra for the off-chance fans wouldn't dig it. But we know better. This is a new Contra game.

Look for it on XBLA and PSN, keeping the 2plyr co-op aspect (online). When more info comes around a thread will honor it. Until then, don't you dare touch my spread shot!

EDIT: This game is actually a meta-sequel to Sega Gen's Contra: Hard Corps.
