Viceland - Dark side of the ring
Any one watched the Viceland series Dark side of the ring?
I actually enjoyed the "The Match Made in Heaven" episode the most. The story of Macho Man and Liz. I also like how they have some lookalikes and film segments to go with the narrative to add to the feel of the episode. "The Montreal Screwjob" was good, as was "The Fabulous Moolah". The "The Last of the Von Erichs" didn't really catch my interests so much. Still need to watch too more. But well worth a look. |
we've posted about it regularly in the 100,001 reply thread.
It does probably deserve its own thread.
We should have done this weeks ago lol
I watched the Montreal Screwjob episode tonight. Good stuff. There's a whole marathon of this and The Wrestlers on Viceland right now. I'm loving it.
The Wrestlers is so good.
I've enjoyed all of the episodes. If I have one gripe, I didn't really like how much of Linda Hogans narrative they used during the Macho Man and Elizabeth episode.
Seemed like she was more spinning tales than reliable. The Bruiser Brody episode was really good. |
Only one I didn't like was the one about the guy I can't even remember his name cause I had never heard off him
Wrestled the free bird gsir cream match |
I found the Von Erich episode very sad and excellent.
I watched them all with my girlfriend who would never watch anything wrestling related if she wasn't with me...
We both liked Bruiser & Montreal Screwjob the best. Gino and Moolah were not very compelling for either of us and The Savage/Liz story comes in a the middle. From my perspective they should have talked about Steph. Haven't watched "The Wrestlers" yet but I will... I know there are some episodes of Dark Side of the Ring that weren't released, like one about Benoit... hoping those are released this summer. |
Only seen Bruiser and Macho so far. Hope to catch the rest on demand.
I found the Moolah one to be quite compelling.
The only unsatisfying one was Gino Hernandez because it completely destroys all ambiguity over a myth most fans are unaware of. Montreal talks on a subject everybody knows and still keeps it relatively fresh.
Gino just wasn't that interesting a guy really and there he is stuck in amongst some legit wrestling folklore. Dino Bravo should have been the one. I think Gertner suggested that for a second season and I'd like to know more about it. |
Topics I'd like to see in further episodes:
Dynamite Kid Chris Adams Dino Bravo Terry Garvin JBL's bullying Steroid trial |
From what I've heard, Dino Bravo is on the season 2 list and will be the first episode.
Just the Brody one so far
Brody was really a great episode, the in depth explanation of how it went down sounds way worse than it reads.
Yeah, I'm going to read the Brody book next once I get time to escape from real life scheduling. The only wrassling I've entrenched myself into these days has been Hulu episodes of RAW/SD, Being the Elite on YouTube and the recent AEW PPV, DoN.
Also, excited to see Moxley-san in NJPW |
Dark Side of The Ring Discussion Thread (Warning: Spoilers)
Might as well create a thread for this. What a fucking show tonight. Man was that ever heartbreaking.
New Jack next week which should be interesting lol |
Felt so bad for his poor son. He looks so much like his dad.
Get back to you guys after....
SPOILER: show |
To be fair, if you're entering a Discussion Thread it's pretty much a given that spoilers will discussed.
Actually, fuck it. I'll just edit the thread title.
Is it really a spoiler that Benoit murdered his family 13 years ago?
SPOILER: show |
Would have preferred Eddie and Benoit's stories separately (as much as possible with Benoit at least)

So much for trying to be nice, I hate you all!!! :)

Lol yes he does
Here's both episodes
Thank you for posting episode 2 :-)
Yes, major rep storm coming your way for that.
A great watch but not what I'd call a fun watch.
The ending offered some catharsis. Though, having listened to both Sandra and Chavo on Jericho's podcast, there wasn't much about this that I didn't already know to some degree. Still, the stuff with his older son at the end...was quite riveting and heartwrenching. |
I watched the first part. It's really hard to want to watch the 2nd part. Chris Benoit IS my favorite wrestler of all time. I still dont believe he did this.
Oh man this is hard to watch. Heartbreaking.
90 minutes of re-treading old ground

I also appreciated Chris Jericho's role in reconnecting the two. It was a good look for him. |
The still living Benoit child was very interesting in all fairness. Even just getting a good look at him was quite good.
Looks like The Brawl For All episode is after New Jack followed by Jimmy Snuka and Nancy Argentino which I have a feeling may be the most jaw dropping episode they've done yet.
That’s gonna be fascinating. Not sure how you tell that story properly without coming to the conclusion that there’s no fucking way Vince wasn’t trying to help with the cover up.
The New Jack episode is going to be full of exaggeration. I look forward to it.

They were in ECW together.

There much more to New Jack that the Mass Transit incident. And yeah Jericho debuted in WCW in August 96. Mass Transit was Nov 96.
He's also doing narration on the Snuka and Dr.D David Schulz episodes and he definitely wasn't around for that.

Lol true
In hindsight, watching this, Benoit should have need much more help from say the WWE after Eddie's death to maybe prevent this tragedy.
The being in Eddie’s bed and holding/crying into his pillow was a little weird.

New Jack is fucking insane. Saw him at countless shows around town over the years. Favorite was a "fans bring the weapons" night, which as you can possibly imagine, was fucked up. A bat with actual barbed wire that made Lucille from TWD look like a toy, someone made a "crown of wire" which was also used. There was a triple threat with New Jack, Bullet and some other older white guy, cant remember his name. Anyway.... NJ and the old guy beat the fuck outta Bullet (he was super young and super green) until he was legit unconscious. Old guy goes to leave, tells New Jack he was going to "whip his black ass" ANNNNNND all fucking hell broke loose. He threw the dude into 5-6 rows of chairs that still had people sitting in them. Took something out of his pocket (a knife probably) and started cutting the dudes head all over the fucking place. His music never stopped during this entire match, making it really seem like some crazy ass street fight. He walked out victorious leaving the place looking like a murder happened. It was fucking crazy. |
Yeah he did have a great music gimmick, just playing it on repeat through all the carnage.
Finally got around to watching the Benoit episode and it easily replaces the Von Erichs as my favorite from the series.
Only weak episode in the series so far was the Montreal Screwjob mainly because a good portion of it devolved into Cornette and Russo just bickering about each other. |
the Moolah episode was very awkward
The moolah episode, while good, didn't seem to know which direction it wanted to go in.
Yeah, they did go a little overboard with trying to cover both sides of the issue especially by including that one guy who runs a Moolah fan club.
Same for that one former wrestler who went on a tangent about her or any other of Moolah's talent being associated with prostitution because of Moolah's accusations. If Luna and Sweet Georgia Brown were still alive, that would have made the episode better overall considering the accusations of what Moolah did to them. |
The one lady whoop had the native American garb and thrashed her neck seemed to insinuate that awful things about moolah are true but then at the end seemed to be saying nobody should say shit cuz thru don't know the truth or something like that.
Just watched it, had me crying
Also love Chris Jericho even more now |

Native Canadian garb! #SlickyTrickyDamon post |

Hahahahahaha |
I can't fucking wait for the episode on Herb Abrams and the UWF.
I'm curious to see how the Snuka/Nancy episode covers possible Vince involvement.
Wait to you hear about all the shady shit involved in Lehigh County. It'll blow your mind.
This is going to be fascinating.
I won't spoil it for everyone but it's VERY shady shit.
I got really interested in this story like 7-8 years ago after listening to Muraco talk about it on Kayfabe Commentaries Timeline 1983. You could just tell there was more to the story. I've read up on it a lot and have listened to a few podcasts on it. It's going to be a VERY bad look for Vince when it comes out. Here's the Muraco clip. Segment is at the 3:30 mark |
I'm really surprised that Vince has not been taken down yet. The guy's got to have so many skeletons in his closet, and it's not like the guy has been careful.
Its mostly due to a mix of wrestling low rep in the mainstream and entertainment/sports industry and him cultivating decades worth of loyalty from those who worked for him and wrestling fans.
Plus, most of the real heat he's gotten in recent times was financial related in the sense investors were getting pissed WWE wasn't maintaining their skyrocketing value and less on ethical issues by WWE. |
Rewatching the end of the Benoit episode.
Does Dean Malenko have Parkinsons? He's very shaky. |
Oh shit, he does.
This is a fascinating and quick read on the Snuka case, if ya want to read a $2.99 e-book. Like Gertner said, when more eyes are on this situation it could be very explosive. It is very, very shady.

Lol holy shit, members of Atlas Security on the New Jack episode. The most incompetent security staff ever.
New Jack is amazing.
Kind of a meh episode. Didn't really go over anything that most fans don't already know.
Brawl for All episode next week That should be something. Prichard and Russo telling lie after lie. |

Jesus I didn't now anything about the smoky mountain stuff. Good fucking grief lol.
So I didn't know much about New Jack other than the mass transit incident and that he did some crazy ass dives. Holy fucking shit this is insane.
Wow New Jack is a peice of shit. The way he laughs about all of it is disturbing.
Dude has zero remorse. Zero.
He was super nice in person, but in the ring - fuck that. |
I'm surprised no one ever tried to seriously injure him or even kill him, honestly.

New Jack is something else. He seems like such a funny, easy going person in interviews. Even on beyond the mat, he came off as really likeable.
Then you watch him try to kill people and stab people and just purposely try to injure others and it's like, wtf and why did people keep booking this guy. |
Quote:
lol I love that he tased vic grimes before throwing him off a fucking scaffold, nearly to his death. Jesus Christ that is so fucked up. I dunno why, but the taser really got me.
He basically said fuck it this guy pussed out last time so I'm just gonna tase him and throw him off and he'll have no choice.
I've also heard that the Grimes/New Jack shit is a work and that Grimes just overshot his landing, which I can believe from watching the tape as frequently as I have.
I love New Jack, but he's all about preserving his gimmick |
Quote:
Lol oh I so want it to be a shoot
I mean... it's funnier as a shoot. But very troubling lmfao
New Jack made me laugh an awful lot during that episode. That might be my new favourite besides Brody and the Von Erichs.
Every episode this season is just money. Top to bottom. The only one I'm not pumped for is the Road Warriors one.
We still have
Owen Hart Herb Abrams Snuka Dino Bravo Dr. D David Schultz Brawl for All Road Warriors |
Dino Bravo could be a sleeper hit
lol especially if they can get Jaque Rougeau
