The Boys

Deserves it's own thread.

Couple episodes in and I'm loving it. Great adaptation of the comic.

Cool that they got Simon Pegg as Hughie's dad, since Hughie was based around Pegg.

Destor 07-27-2019 09:51 AM

Im starting it tomorrow. Very hyped for it

Seanny One Ball 07-27-2019 05:09 PM

Think I read about the comic years ago, "Mothers Milk" is definitely a memorable name. Amazon Prime too, so one I can definitely watch. :y:

Fignuts 07-27-2019 05:16 PM

Most of the characters are spot on, and really great. Hughie isn’t Scottish but they still captured the personality of the character really well. Butcher, Homelander, and Starlight are the standouts so far. Theyre adapted from the comic excellently. Only disappointment is Frenchie. He’s not the happy go lucky crazy guy he is in the comics. In this, he’s more or less just really strung out.

Fignuts 07-27-2019 05:20 PM

It’s not quite as over the top as the comic, but some of that stuff wouldn’t work as well on screen anyway. I think they found a really good medium in between keeping the story grounded and the crazy shit from the comics.

Seanny One Ball 07-27-2019 05:42 PM

Hughie isn't how it would be pronounced in Scotland anyway.

Shoe or Shoe-E is how we say it. Like what you put on your feet. Like if you're calling a pig.

Fignuts 07-27-2019 06:45 PM

I was talking about the character, not the name.

Fignuts 07-27-2019 06:46 PM

Also, What is calling a pig?

Going to re-subscribe and dig in after Ip Man 3 finishes.

Destor 07-29-2019 08:51 PM

Just watched the opener. Kripke has a homerun on his hands.

Fignuts 07-30-2019 05:37 AM

I like what they've done with Stillwell here. In the comic (where the character is a male) he is a perfectly flawless, corporate machine who is always ten steps of everyone else, allt he way to the end. Which is very impressive and all that, but it also leads to him being a bit one dimensional.

They gave Madelyn just enough vulnerability to be more interesting, while keeping that cool calculated strength needed to give orders to living gods.

Fignuts 07-30-2019 05:41 AM

Also holy shit, that ending goes way off the rails from the book. Not a bad thing depending on where they go with it. It's definitely got me interested to see what happens with it.

SPOILER: show
Kinda bummed they killed Stillwell already though. She was great.

Seanny One Ball 07-30-2019 08:07 PM

Jesus fucking Christ dude.

Right just a warning to anybody who hasn't seen or read about this... this is mental.
SPOILER: show
This is like Hereditary meets Harvey Weinstein.

Seanny One Ball 07-30-2019 08:09 PM

Everything's going to be fine now, Karl Urban will fix it.

Seanny One Ball 07-30-2019 08:48 PM

First episode is totally bonkers...
Good casting, particularly Anthony Starr - his expression looks so nefarious for a hero
Erin Moriarty is good casting too, vulnerable yet formidable is a tough one to pull off. Take note Marvel, this was missing from *Cap'n Maveral.
I'm enjoying this, it's all upside down and back to front but it all seems familiar until you're shown what's up.

This one is going to lead me down dead ends and false corridors before it's over.

Seanny One Ball 07-30-2019 08:55 PM

*Overheard a foreign guy say this the other day, was fantastic.

Seanny One Ball 07-30-2019 10:36 PM

I thought this was going to be extremely bleak but it's hilarious too. I mean I'm not one for gore but I can handle it if it's as ridiculous as what I just saw.
I'm 3 episodes in and this programme hasn't settled into one definitive style yet. It's like a comedy and a thriller with occasional extreme violence.

Destor 07-30-2019 11:40 PM

102

Kripke has really taken what he learned from supernatural and harnessed it here. He manages to juggle genuine levity without compromising the sting of the razor sharp social commentary.

I dont know how long they can keep the stakes this high but right now the show is aces.

Seanny One Ball 07-31-2019 12:37 AM

Elizabeth Shue probably doing her best work since "Leaving Las Vegas" here.
She's not chewing scenery either, she's completely at ease in the character. Erin Moriarty is equally adept at this as is Anthony Starr and the more I see him I really quite like the Quaid guy playing Hughie.
Karl Urban is solid as a rock and carrying a sizeable share of the comedy on his shoulders, it's always great to have Karl Urban as he is shamefully underrated.

Seanny One Ball 07-31-2019 12:43 AM

Episode 6
SPOILER: show
The support group scene... that is heavy shit. I thought that was heading for comedy...

Seanny One Ball 07-31-2019 12:46 AM

Ahahahaha the cameos are appropriately brilliant.

Well the ice capades comment cracked me up.

But yeah, that was a great scene.

Fignuts 07-31-2019 01:01 AM

The deep is probably my favorite character. Lost my shit at both of his attempts to save sea creatures.

Seanny One Ball 07-31-2019 01:45 AM

I like how all of the superhero names are total shit. The Black Noir, The Deep, Homelander...

Seanny One Ball 07-31-2019 05:41 PM

I keep thinking the wrong people are responsible for the shit that's going down... I'm well impressed with the way this has been put together. So creepy and grim and I am leaving with some weird, weird boners.

Seanny One Ball 07-31-2019 05:49 PM

"Never has a man thrown his life away so completely as you have today"

Seanny One Ball 07-31-2019 05:59 PM

Romeo and Juliet had nothing on these two.
You think you're getting one thing, you get another. You assume the tone and they flip it on you every time.

This is a perfect show.

Seanny One Ball 07-31-2019 06:12 PM

That ending is going to make waiting for the second series a real bastard.

Destor 07-31-2019 09:25 PM

103

this is the ep i was waiting on. First two establish the world and the stakes. 103 slows things down and lets us see the characters live in the world they set up. This is more representative of what the show will be long tern.

Well paced show. Really knows what its doing. Structurally this is very well constructed tv.

Seanny One Ball 07-31-2019 09:56 PM

I love the way it flips through genres, some scenes completely mislead me into thinking I was going into a horror, comedy, thriller or action scene and then completely changed within moments.
I haven't read the source material but I take it there is an ending to all of it because the wiki page says it ran 72 issues and hasn't been continued. That's a positive sign to me after the way GoT ended.

Destor 07-31-2019 10:00 PM

I do prefer shows that have an ending and build toward it. Its hard to see past success though. Most shows end up stretching for extra seasons even after their story is ready to end. How I Met Your Mothers final 2 seasons for example.

Fignuts 07-31-2019 10:37 PM

It has an ending and it’s an awesome twist, though developments in the show kind of contradict it.

BIG TIME SPOILER FROM THE COMIC
SPOILER: show
In the comic Homelander has no recollection of raping Becka because it was actually Black Noir. But here he doesn’t seem confused at all and seemingly did do it. Which begs the question what their plans are for Black Noir.

Seanny One Ball 07-31-2019 10:57 PM

SPOILER: show
Yeah but you see her go with Homelander into the room...

Hmmm.

Seanny One Ball 07-31-2019 11:02 PM

Arghhh I have to check the Wiki page now

MORE BIG TIME COMIC SPOILERS SERIOUSLY BIGGEST PLOT TWIST OF THE ENTIRE SERIES HERE

SPOILER: show
Black Noir puts on Homelanders suit before he does it. He also takes a bunch of pictures of himself slaughtering an entire family, and eating their baby. As fucked up as the show is, the comic is really vile. Anyway the fact is, Black Noir is a stronger clone of Homelander whose entire purpose is to be a killswitch for Homelander if Vought American ever feels it's within their best interest to off him. Supposedly they used their experience of raising homelander to better control Noir. But they still didn't get it quite right because the guy obviously goes insane. Because his entire purpose of existance is to kill Homelander and it's looking like it's never going to happen. So he does a whole bunch of awful horrid shit while wearing homelander's costume to try and trigger Vought into giving him the order.

So the footage of Homelander entering the room with Becka makes sense because it could still be Noir. What doesn't make sense is the actual Homelander reacting like it was him. If it was Noir, he should be confused and have no recollection of the encounter. I dunno we'll see where they go with it.

Fignuts 08-01-2019 01:06 AM

The show is a lot better than the book to be honest. The book is pretty good for a laugh most of the time, and there are genuinely great characters, but it's a bit up it's own ass, and at times feels more concerned with shitting on superheroes for the sake of it instead of telling the story.

It's a common problem with Garth Ennis cause at times he's more concerned with using his characters as his own personal soapbox. Butcher and Jesse Custer are literally the same fucking character. Two hard bad asses who constantly go on rants about something or other because something triggered Garth that day.

Like, don't get me wrong, Garth Ennis is a great writer, but he'd be a lot better if he wasn't so concerned with constantly telling people his opinions on everything.

Seanny One Ball 08-01-2019 01:08 AM

Okay so the show must be diverging slightly on some points just to keep it surprising for fans of the comic book yet to retain the theme for the fresh audience.

I can dig it and despite how fanboy I am about "my things" I am reaping the benefits of how well prepared this is without being so into the comic that the slightest change annoyed me.

Very glad I read the Wiki before the spoiler tag, now I'm kinda just waiting...

Yeah, the thing is, while it does go well off the rails in a number of ways, I'm not bothered because they absolutely fucking nailed the characters. That's what's most important, imo. You can tell your own version of events as long as you capture what made the characters great in the source material.

That's why The Boys is awesome, and Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique is worthless garbage.

Damian Rey 2.0 08-01-2019 03:30 AM

This show was awesome. Finished it up today. So fucking good. Seanny is right, every time you think you're going in one direction, they make a hard turn in the opposite.

The zingers and comedy bits are great. Karl Urban is so damn good. Absolutely magnetic as Butcher.

The season finale really ramped it up. Wasn't expecting the ending at all. I'm excited for the next season. But it sucks we have to wait.

Seanny One Ball 08-01-2019 04:00 AM

Karl Urban brings gravitas to the whole thing before you've even seen it. Then he has the humility not to steal the show.
I think Elizabeth Shue just had the best role of her life.

Destor 08-01-2019 08:46 PM

Spicegirls. Lul to the Nth

This show needs to be careful. Im begining to think there will be no bad eps.

Damian Rey 2.0 08-02-2019 05:43 PM

Spoiler alert: there aren't.

Seanny is right. Starlight is everything Captain Marvel should've been as a character.

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2019 06:13 PM

There really aren't. I can't think of an episode that wasted any of its run time.

RP 08-13-2019 04:50 PM

I got Prime now so i might watch this soon.

GD 08-13-2019 06:10 PM

Thoroughly enjoyed the show. Karl Urban and the person who plays Homelander were amazing. Can't believe I had some sympathy for The Deep after the first episode. Quality stuff.

Tom Guycott 08-13-2019 11:36 PM

Having not read the comic, I'm guessing:
SPOILER: show
that was the idea they were going for with the kid... raise him in secret with the "love" that Homelander never got in the lab, and hopefully he will be Plan B in another decade or so when or after John went off the rails, which the doc sounded like he was suspect of being an inevitability. Homelander was never supposed to find out about the baby until it was too late to stop him or at least not have any sort of formative influence in that kid's life. But now that he knows, we get wacky hi-jinx for additional seasons and the added bonus of significantly less baby eating.

You say Starlight is what Captain Marvel should have been; I say this is the douchebag Injustice Superman we deserved to get in the movies instead of wasting effort in edited mustaches.

Unrelated to anything mentioned in the thread: I wonder how many times Billy Zane is going to pop up? Also, he's another guy who doesn't age along with Karl Urban. Throw them in a Highlander reboot with Paul Rudd.

I realized it was him pretty quick... no matter how much he ages, his eyes/nose area still looks like he's 8. It's weird.

Also of note on Billy Zane again... he plays himself.

And he plays himself in Zoolander...

Zoolander and The Boys share universes, and you can't tell me otherwise. If one of the Supes busts out the tiny cell phone next season, I told you so!

Also also, I like that this universe subtlety dropped that 9/11 never happened in it.

Fignuts 08-14-2019 04:35 AM

He seemed familiar but I couldn't place it. Wasnt an important enough character that I felt like looking it up.

Destor 08-14-2019 06:50 PM

I've him in other works so there was nothing to be shocked by.

Destor 08-14-2019 06:51 PM

For me.

Plus he does voice work for Sora so he was all over the place promoting that earlier this year

Tom Guycott 08-15-2019 11:31 PM

I had to watch it again. I mean that as complimentary as I possibly can.

Seanny One Ball 08-16-2019 12:26 PM

I firmly believe The Boys to be Elizabeth Shue's greatest performance.
That was inspired casting.

DrA 08-17-2019 06:26 AM

I heard that Jack Quaid is in this so I want to check it out at some point.

Seanny One Ball 08-17-2019 06:26 PM

You will not regret it

RP 08-24-2019 04:19 AM

Just finished episode 2. Elizabeth Shue still has it! All those 80's boner memories are coming back. The Karate Kid boners. The Adventure's of Babysitting. I think I once jacked off to her banging the Thor guy in that. Cocktail... hard to jackoff to because Tom Cruise is being all weird flipping bottles and smiling and shit. Leaving Las Vegas... who doesnt want to drink themselves to death with Elizabeth Shue riding your limp dick?

Jordan 08-24-2019 04:49 AM

Just started watching this, it's really good.

El Vaquero de Infierno 12-15-2019 07:27 AM

I'm four episodes into the series; I don't know why I held off from watching this show, as it is fantastic. Karl Urban, Elizbeth Shue and Erin Moriarty are owning it.

The Deep having a lover's quarrel with the dolphin in the back of a van was priceless.

Damian Rey 2.0 12-15-2019 11:35 AM

That scene with the dolphin was amazing.

And this series just further endeared me to Karl Urban.

Sixx 12-16-2019 09:36 AM

I thought Karl Urban was bad casting, but I only hear good things now. Huh.

Seanny One Ball 12-16-2019 10:11 AM

Karl Urban is never bad casting

Sixx 12-16-2019 10:19 AM

Normally, that's not something I'd cosign IRL. Especially in "these troubling times".

However, in the bounds of this show, I'm like "Why the fuck not?"

Bobholly138 07-25-2020 12:12 PM

Boys is the best comic based show since Constatine.

Seanny One Ball 07-25-2020 01:22 PM

I was swaying between it and The Umbrella Academy for my top comic book show. They are both outstanding so either way the viewers win.

Lock Jaw 07-25-2020 01:24 PM

I regret to say I still need to watch The Boys....

My top comic book show still prop gonna be Legends of Tomorrow or Doom Patrol

Seanny One Ball 07-25-2020 01:29 PM

Doom Patrol is too cheesy and daft.
Alan Tudyk is great in it though, as always.

Destor 07-25-2020 07:00 PM

Destor 07-25-2020 07:01 PM

Krypton was dropped after 2 seasons.

I dropped it after like 3 eps though.

Lock Jaw: Season 3 of Daredevil is probably the best Netflix ever put out. It's really really good. I've seen it twice.

Lock Jaw 07-29-2020 10:23 PM

Yeah, I hear it is really good.

Never watched Punisher S2 either.... really liked the first one.

Also, I think there is a S3 of Jessica Jones, but S2 was a chore so dunno about that one....

El Vaquero de Infierno 07-30-2020 05:29 AM

I too found season 2 of Jessica Jones a chore and I think I only watched a couple of episodes from season 3 before moving on.

El Vaquero de Infierno 07-30-2020 05:30 AM

I would have loved to have seen a season 3 of Luke Cage; it looks like it was going to go in a really interesting direction with Cage essentially becoming a crime boss.

Damian Rey 2.0 07-30-2020 03:22 PM

I, too, only got thru a few episodes of Jessica Jones. S2 wasn't great and I couldn't get into s3 because of it.

S2 of Punisher was pretty good. Bit of an underwhelmingending but once it got going I really killed it.

S3 of Daredevil was fucking stellar. The scene with him yelling at Fisk in their final brutal, bloody battle, was so damn good.

Damian Rey 2.0 07-30-2020 03:26 PM

Just watched it again. Damn it I love that scene.

Seanny One Ball 08-23-2020 08:28 AM

Season 2 looks relevant to say the least.

Race riots and superheroes...
