Portal 2

Portal on Steam got an update on March the 1st. In the update was an extra achievement and new radio transmissions.

Today's Portal update, officially, features the following addition: "Changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations." Not officially noted there is the new Steam achievement "Transmission Received" which goes undescribed by the developer, but involves the use of Portal's in-game radios.

Also included, as spotted by Steam forumgoers are a bunch of new sound files, all prefaced with the word "dinosaur." According to members there, those sound files feature Morse code encoded transmissions.

While we have no idea at this point what Valve is planning—the Steam mob is currently pounding away at a solution and Morse code experts are encouraged to join the fray—we wouldn't be surprised if the Half-Life and Left 4 Dead developer was planning a Portal related announcement. If it were to announce Portal 2, we wouldn't be surprised. If it were to announce a sequel to one of its games in its own game, we'd simply be impressed.

Given the close relationship between Portal and Half-Life, we could also be looking at a separate game announcement, like the long-awaited Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Whatever the case, we're excited and keeping a close eye on updates.

Update: New sound files, including this new computerized voiceover from something that is not GlaDOS and these transmissions, have been making their way to YouTube from users. Give 'em a listen.

The game continues, with those sound files containing data for equally mysterious images. There's plenty of code-cracking to be done, as Valve is going hog wild with this multi-layered puzzle.

Here are the sound files linked to by Kotaku:

There where images in the games files as well. Set to spoiler so you don't have to scroll past them all the time:

There is another thing, this:

someone on the steam forum said this

Quote:

The title of this login screen is GladOS 3.11.
3/11, as in March 11th.

Gabe Newell is set to recieve the Pioneer Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards on 3/11, March 11th.
We will receive more news on March 11th.
So maybe we'll hear what this is about then.

I checked the 360 version of the game and there was no new update for that version. Everyones trying to decode the messages right now. Some are saying this could be for Half Life 2 Ep 3 or maybe Portal 2. I was never a fan of HL (I played the 1st one on the PS2) but I loved Portal and would love another one.

RoXer 03-02-2010 01:26 AM

I will let the nerdy Lost type nerds dig deep into this and not worry about it until they come up with some concrete news.

Drakul 03-02-2010 10:48 PM

The digged, they decoded things which turned into thing they had to decode a 2nd time but people have found out what the stuff means. It's far too long to post here:

Looks like we're getting Portal 2.

And yes, as hinted at earlier, players will be reunited with GLaDOS.

The only details on Portal 2's multiplayer mode from GameStop are that it will feature its own unique story-driven campaign. The "new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals," requiring players "to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively."

Here's the full product description.

Coming this holiday. Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007's Game of the Year and draws from the award-winning formula of innovative game play, story, and music that earned the original over 70 industry accolades. Features single and multiplayer co-op modes. The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game. The game's two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively.
Triumphant.

Source. Cool, I'm looking forward to it. Co-Op should be fun.

It is hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Fignuts 03-08-2010 01:49 PM

Good. Now where is HL2: Episode 3?

#BROKEN Hasney 06-02-2010 02:42 AM

So they've cancelled the Portal 2 E3 event to be replaced with a "surprise", but the way they cancelled it just shows why I love Valve so much.

Quote:

Subject: A note from Aperture Science

Dear Subject Name Here,
*
Aperture Science is pleased to inform you that we have partnered with Valve to announce the gala CANCELLATION of the June 14 Portal 2 event at the Regal Theater. The event will be replaced by a surprise. And even though the cancellation of the event certainly counts as a surprise, we are pleased to further announce that the cancellation of the event is not THE surprise. However, per International treaties regarding the definition of the word "surprise", of which both Aperture Science and Valve are signatories, the time, date and content of the actual surprise will only become available as you experience the surprise.
*
If you'd like to ask fruitless questions about the E3 Portal 2 surprise or, more fruitfully, schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's Special Envoy to Surprises, Doug Lombardi.
*
Thank you for *RECORD SCRATCH!!!*
*
PS: The surprising record scratch is also not the surprise.

This is the greatest opening line in a video game ever.

Fignuts 06-17-2010 11:49 AM

What was the surprise?

Portal 2 on PS3 that's better than the 360 version.

Funky Fly 06-17-2010 04:04 PM

It uses Steam, right? I assume that means free user created content or some ish?

Save your progress into the steamcloud was the only thing mentioned, so you can resume your game on someone elses PS3 using your profile.

Probably free DLC as well, which would mean MS would allow Valve DLC for free on 360 as they only do it when it's free on the competition. (See: Burnout Paradise)

In what way will it be better? Or is it one of those pointless thing where some miniscule detail is slightly better on one console than it is on another?

The PS3 version can play with PC/Mac players, support Steam Cloud (so your save games will be on the net and playable on any console or PC) and also come with a free PC and Mac copy if you link your PSN and Steam accounts. The 360 will have none of that.

Yes, seriously.

Valve’s Chet Faliszek described the cross-platforming process to NowGamer:

“The mod tools have to stay on the PC side just because there’s a bunch of dependencies that require the Windows platform,” Faliszek said. “But the content that comes out is agnostic, and so we will be seeing that on all the platforms. Depending on the platform you’re on, I should say, will depend on how we’re delivering it.”

PS3 and PC players will both be able to mod through the Steam network, but Xbox 360 abilities remain a mystery.

Source.

Sounds cool. Though someone on GT said 360 probably wont get it because MS are weird about free stuff. Their probably right.

Fignuts 01-26-2011 05:45 AM

Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3 had mod content as well. I'll say one thing, if more PS3 games had this feature, it would make PS3 the superior console to play on, at least for me.

After all, unlimited custom content is why I see PC as the superior platform in gaming.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-26-2011 10:20 AM

If Sony are offering content for free, can see MS following suit. They have in the past with things like Burnout Paradise.

Not long now, definitely the most excited I've been about a game since ME2, perhaps even HL2.

Excited to see if there's any futher Black Mesa or 7-Hour War references.

My only worry is whether or not a long game version of Portal will lose some magic.

It's only a minor worry though, I trust Valve on this. I don't trust them on Half-Life 2 Episode 3 however.

Emperor Smeat 04-11-2011 04:44 PM

I haven't read the digital comic yet but it is supposed to reveal what occurred between Portal 1 and Portal 2 for story but Valve did say there is barely any reference to the Half-Life series since Portal is more of a side-story or alternate story.

Now Portal 2 content has appeared in them.

Got it XBox early eh? Naughty naughty.

Anyway, just finished the PC version. Played it for about 10 hours straight.

Won't spoil any of it as I think it's ridiculously great. Especially the conclusion.

Big time 10/10 for me. ME3 will have to go someway to beat this (in my eyes).

So, who here was really involved in the ARG? I think Hasney was?

Hasney (or anyone really), if you WERE involved in the ARG, then isn't that a silhouette of Rattman at 1:13 - 1:22? But didn't he die? It's a silhouette of someone limping along with a cube on their back. Near the right side of the screen.

Could you point this out to your fellow ARG buddies? Or could you post this on Reddit and see what they say? They're heavy into the ARG too. I dunno. I'm passing this info onto you, Hasney (or anyone else) because I don't know where to go with it. And I also don't want to sign up anywhere else.
