I miss those WCW 1997/1998 crowds

I'm watching an episode of Nitro from March 30, 1998 to be exact and one match was Buff Bagwell vs Raven. And the crowd was hot for this match. They were going nuts every time Buff did his "stuff" And they were all over Raven. Every time Buff got any sort of offesne in, the crowd went insane. You think you were watching Rock/Hogan WM 18 for a second.

And then Goldberg vs Big Boss man was also a hot one. Goldberg could just wink and the crowd would go ape shit.

So where are these people and how do I find them?

Probably some backwater hick town that has a population of 30.000 and only 3 surnames.

Have you tried looking in one of the arenas that has "UFC" on the marquee?

TOVO Fact: Tovo likes PB&J.

Just outside Atlanta.

Loose Cannon 03-07-2010 09:18 PM

oh yea and this was the same show Jericho was reading off his 1001 holds

Supreme Olajuwon 03-07-2010 09:24 PM

The great thing about those crowds is they were always focused on what was happening in the ring. And they weren't anywhere near as cynical as the crowds of today

THAT was classic! I gotta check youtube for that clip!

Xero 03-07-2010 09:27 PM

ARMBAR!

jskinnyg 03-07-2010 09:27 PM

And it was 1004 holds! Crappy video, but HILARIOUS!!!

Jeritron 03-07-2010 09:28 PM

Lots of people in Looney Toons shirts, or other assorted cartoon character tees.

Pretty sure there's a whole family sporting matching Whinnie The Pooh oversized tees during Hogan's heel turn

jskinnyg 03-07-2010 09:30 PM

OK This one is better...

Loose Cannon 03-07-2010 09:32 PM

and it seems like there were more signs back then. everyone had a sign. I even saw a guy on that show with a piece of that brown shipping paper and he put "This show needs more Flock" on it

Jeritron 03-07-2010 09:36 PM

There were far more signs at WWF shows I felt

Loose Cannon 03-07-2010 09:41 PM

well like both companies during that era. I only mentioned WCW because I watched it today. but yea, both companies had the same types of fans

jskinnyg 03-07-2010 09:42 PM

And one more... Awesome...

owenbrown 03-07-2010 09:53 PM

What happened to the crowds that threw things in the ring after a shitty finish?

Juan 03-07-2010 09:55 PM

I feel like people nowadays are too afraid to look like marks to react to anything. 9 times out of 10, the people in the front row are sitting down the whole time.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-07-2010 10:04 PM

WWF crowds back then were hot for the main event and the upper mid card, but WCW crowds popped for everything.

Jeritron 03-07-2010 10:08 PM

Pretty sure the WWF crowds were popping huge for Al Snow, Val Venis, D'Lo, The Godfather, and even Kaientai
Not to mention the tag teams, and the women like Sable and Debra.

The whole card was over and popped start to finish

Supreme Olajuwon 03-07-2010 10:11 PM

Pretty sure the WWF crowds think you're a jerk.

Jeritron 03-07-2010 10:26 PM

Pretty sure you've been disapproved by the IWC

Loose Cannon 03-07-2010 10:40 PM

I mean look at this shit

I was at a Nitro and the nWo was cutting a promo and someone threw a soda at Nash and he caught it and drank it.

VSG 03-07-2010 11:34 PM

That crowd in that above clip reminds me of crappy video games!

crowd never sits down or stops cheering once

Xero 03-07-2010 11:47 PM

"He leaps over Colorado Springs in a single bound!"

lol

Jeritron 03-07-2010 11:47 PM

Raven was one of their crowd favorites. He was also one of the guys everyone seem to like. Even people who didn't like WCW.

Of course he never got the push

Supreme Olajuwon 03-07-2010 11:52 PM

The pop @ 4:26 is ridiculous

Evil Vito 03-08-2010 12:07 AM

Goldberg/Raven was fucking amazing. I bet if Raven stepped into an area WITHOUT plants in it they still would have thrown him back. Ridiculous crowd.

jskinnyg 03-08-2010 12:43 AM

I hated the goldberg character, but the pops were ridiculous... And the Fans throwing Raven back in gimmick was pretty genius...

Skippord 03-08-2010 01:10 AM

The answer to your question is before the internet became popular

Triple A 03-08-2010 02:20 AM

Damn, those clips are pretty crazy. Def a ton of hicks though during the closeups so I dunno.

DrA 03-08-2010 02:36 AM

Even to this day there are still heated discussions wondering if Diamond Dallas Page prevented Goldberg from getting his first defeat.

Shit. They wouldn't even try stuff with plants like that these days. The most we get are the CM Punk saviour segments that are sooooo obvious.

Wishbone 03-08-2010 02:59 AM

god this just made me hate the WWE today even more:'(

First thing that came to my mind.

Sixx 03-08-2010 08:50 AM

Is it just me, or did the titles used to change way more often on TV?

#BROKEN Hasney 03-08-2010 09:04 AM

WCW were so into the ratings war that they changed belts on free-TV quite often.

WWE did it a few times in that period, but they did build to the PPVs a lot harder.

Of course he never got the push

If by never got a push you mean won the US title, had one of the hottest feuds in the company with DDP, and was the leader of a popular stable...then yes, he never got a push.
