Cult Films

For the aware -

"A cult film (also known as a cult movie/picture or a cult classic) is a film that has acquired a highly devoted but specific group of fans. Often, cult movies have failed to achieve fame outside of the small fanbases; however, there have been exceptions that have managed to gain fame among mainstream audiences. Many cult movies have gone on to transcend their original cult status and have become recognized as classics; others are of the "so bad it's good" variety and are destined to remain in obscurity. Cult films often become the source of a thriving, obsessive, and elaborate subculture of fandom, hence the analogy to cults. However, not every film with a rabid fanbase is necessarily a cult film. Usually, cult films have limited but very special, noted appeal. Cult films are often known to be eccentric and do not follow traditional standards of mainstream cinema and usually explore topics not considered in any way mainstream—yet there are examples that are relatively normal. They are often considered controversial because they step outside standard narrative and technical conventions known."

The film did flop at the box office though, and it has gained a small cult following since, as has The Devil's Rejects. Most popular cult movies are older films, and I am predicting one day both will be cult classics.

I could rip this off, but I'm gonna borrow from Wikipedia again...

"A cult film is also a movie that attracts a devoted group of followers or obsessive fans, despite having failed commercially on its initial release. The term also describes films that have remained popular over a long period of time amongst a small group of followers. In many cases, cult films may have failed to achieve mainstream success on original release"

"The Wicker Man" remake also has a small cult like following to it, only it falls into the "It's so bad, it's good" group filled with cheesy lines not intended to make people laugh.

So even if a film is mainstream, it can still become a cult film.

Kalyx triaD 04-03-2010 04:33 PM

Also, "Street Fighter."

Machine Girl FTW!

dronepool 04-03-2010 04:48 PM

Does Clockwork Orange or Brazil count as cult? They did pretty good, but not many people saw those films unless they're older or into films a lot and they have a small following...

Gotta love Rocky Horror, I also love its 'sequel' Shock Treatment too.

Emperor Smeat 04-03-2010 06:03 PM

Fight Club although its status could have changed if it wasn't for The Matrix being the big name movie of 1999. The Matrix ended up being the mainstream film and Fight Club relegated to "cult" status.

PapaGeorgio 04-03-2010 06:31 PM

I like arguing about if a movie is cult film or not. I think some can instantly become one, some do take more time to define themselves. Some also can start as one but grow out of it. I think Pulp Fiction is a great case of that, I still hear it be called a Cult Film from time to time and in my view I don't think that is much the case any more. I also would argue against Fight Club in some aspects. I can appreciate though there is a certain subsect within Fight Club that is a "Cult Film" esque liking, and then the more main stream portion.

It's a love/hate thing for arguing what exactly is a Cult Film. In the end all a matter of opinion though.

I forgot about Pink Flamingos , I like that one as well.

What Would Kevin Do? 04-04-2010 10:57 AM

Besides a lot of the ones already listed.

Cecil B. Demented.
Heathers (not sure if it really is, but I could see it being a cult film.)

I remember it being popular at one point, and I love that film, but Im sure it could be considered a cult classic now.

Also Bubba Ho Tep is an awesome film.

PapaGeorgio 04-04-2010 11:28 AM

Almost got to watch El Topo with a friend last night but once it started he said he already seen it as forced him to netflix it. So watched Bubba Ho-Tep instead, which is a GREAT film.
