Will There Be a 'Magic 8-Ball' Movie?
'Signs Point to Yes'

Paramount, which scored a major success with Hasbro’s Transformers, has extended its deal with toy company Mattel by acquiring the rights to make a live action adventure movie based on the Magic 8-Ball, a predictive toy, which contains a die with 20 pre-set answers. Hollywood’s headlong pursuit of “toyetic” properties, which is evident in numerous projects currently in development including Battleship, Stretch Armstrong, Risk, and Major Mason, made it likely that a studio would try to make a Magic 8-Ball movie, especially since Universal is already prepping a film based on Hasbro’s Ouija Board Game (see “Lost Scribes on Board for Ouija”).

Deadline New York is reporting that Paramount, which is already working with Mattel on a Max Steel movie, has hired Jon Gunn and John Mann, who have written Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians for Dreamworks Animation, to write the screenplay for the Magic 8-Ball movie.

The story writes itself. Guy or kid finds a Magic 8-Ball and it turns out that everything it says actually happens. He uses it for wealth and power, but ultimately realizes that life was better without the Magic 8-Ball. The financial success of the film will completely depend on who is in the starring role.

It sounds like fucking bullshit.

Quite surprised it hasn't been done already

I really don't see the difference other than it's an attempt to cross-promote and cash in on old shit. Like we'll probably see a clone of Zathura or Jumanji, only it's a board game of Risk. They re-release the games, tie in shit with the film, market it well and prob make a bit of money. But it will all be tripe.

I can actually see a plot around the 8-ball. Countless sitcoms used it as a plot device already, it isn't a stretch to see it made into a feature. Not saying it'll be a blockbuster but worse concepts have had movies.

Paramount can't go wrong with this.

Guys ever see that episode of Rocko's Modern Life, it was centered around Ed Bighead and his job? He started at the bottom and worked his way to the top just by asking the Magic Meatball (I think that what it was called) for all the answers, and when he got to the top, broke it, then the boss pushed the button and sent his ass back down to earth.......literally.

If a cartoon pulled it off, I see no problem using the real thing in a movie.

It will probably star The Rock, er Dwayne Johnson.
