Is Swagger getting heat or hate?

Hello everyone, I probably hold the record for longest time going to a website without registering for the forum. Been coming here since the daily News and Rumors days. Was a HUGE wrestling fan from 1996-2006. Took a long break from wrestling; about 3 years. Been watching now again for about six months, every Raw, Smackdown, NXT, PPV. Here goes with my first post..

Since Jack Swagger won the World Heavyweight Title his reactions seem to taken a tone I haven't heard in a long time. Not the same that today's good heels like CM Punk, The Miz, and Jericho(currently the best three in my opinion) get, but a "we don't like you, go away!" feel. I realize the World Heavyweight Champion is supposed to draw major emotion one way or the other; but has it become genuine dislike? It seems so to me.

Does anyone else feel Jack Swagger is not getting heat from WWE audiences but actual hate and dislike?

I will be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts.

Perry Saturn 05-02-2010 12:18 PM

he is very bland in my opinion

Razzamajazz 05-02-2010 12:20 PM

i blame the younger crowd only paying to see the cena's and dx's

Nark Order 05-02-2010 12:20 PM

No, he's doing wonderfully as a heel and is getting proper heel heat. His promo on Smackdown was incredible just for its heat drawing ability alone.

I was actually at that show in Hershey, PA. The segment went on for about 20 minutes live, not the 6 that it was on Smackdown. I actually didn't know a word he said until I watched the show.

Anybody Thrilla 05-02-2010 12:28 PM

A heel getting booed is not a bad thing.

Nark Order 05-02-2010 12:30 PM

I'm not discounting your first hand experience but it seems like Swagger is definitely growing from his time as Champion. He's got a new feel to his character and I think people are definitely grasping onto it. Whether it's all heel heat or half heel heat/half X-Pac heat, I think it's kind of irrelevant at this point. Anytime the WWE shoves somebody down the peoples' throats there is a bit of an ajustment period. The fact the Swagger is getting the reactions that he's getting so soon after winning the title is still fairly impressive.

His promos are getting much better, he has more heat to work off of now, the guy is definitely moving only up.

Skippord 05-02-2010 12:33 PM

I think he's getting hat

Nark Order 05-02-2010 12:33 PM

I would be in support of Swagger getting a hat.

You are probably right in wording it as an "adjustment period". Perhaps adult fans are merely just irritated by this sudden push?

Skippord 05-02-2010 12:36 PM

I would support him getting something to fix his lisp

Mr. Pierre 05-02-2010 12:38 PM

I think it's pretty genuine heat. I mean, he won the Championship in cheap fashion, then goes onto a PPV and beats the hottest babyface in the company, and all he does is brag about his upbringing and how awesome he is whenever he gets on the mic. I think he's doing a great job :y:

Anybody Thrilla 05-02-2010 12:39 PM

No way, the lisp makes him. He's been so good at everything he's ever attempted to do in his life...but he still has that fucking speech impediment. It's almost like that his motivation to be the best at everything else.

Skippord 05-02-2010 12:40 PM

I agree, I just really fucking hate lisps

I think so and it is kind of irritating from the viewpoint of a casual fan. Here is a guy that had no build-up to win the MITB, much less to win the WHC. WWE's booking is fairly ADD at times. They gave you no reason to care about a Jack Swagger title reign and then expected everyone to care about it when he won it.

Awful booking IMO, but I whink the WWE and Swagger are doing great with it now. It might take a bit for everyone to jump on board, but it's definitely working now.

Anybody Thrilla 05-02-2010 12:43 PM

This is SLIGHTLY off topic, but does it strike anyone else as odd that FACES are the ones that make fun of Swagger's speech impediment? What does that teach the kids?

Skippord 05-02-2010 12:43 PM

that it isn't ok to have a lisp

Anybody Thrilla 05-02-2010 12:43 PM

Also, Swagger's matches since the title win have all been sweet.

Anybody Thrilla 05-02-2010 12:44 PM

Dusty Rhodes had a lisp and nobody said SHIT.

thejamminone 05-02-2010 12:45 PM

I would say he's getting "heat".

Skippord 05-02-2010 12:49 PM

The lisp was the least of Dusty's speech impediments

thedamndest 05-02-2010 12:49 PM

Swagger is one of the best newer guys they have. Pretty much everyone here was saying DiBiase would be the next guy in the main event, partly due to DiBiase's association with Orton and partly due to the WWE seeming to forget about Swagger for the better part of a year. It's pretty great that he's gone from forgotten on Raw to World Champion on Smackdown. Could he have had a little more heat going in? Probably. But if Smackdown is going to build new stars Swagger is the kind of guy they could use.

Ultra Mantis 05-02-2010 12:54 PM

Genuine heat or not, it's preferable to the "meh" reaction Sheamus recieved during most of his title reign.

Jordan 05-02-2010 12:55 PM

Yeah Swagger has made it IMO. He has made great heel character, his interview style is HILARIOUS which is what we want from a heel (such as Jericho, Bobby Heenan, and other great heels have taught us), his is a huge guy, having great matches, and to top it all off he has a hilarious lisp.

The promo he did on Smackdown!, wow I was speechless. He was drawing AMAZING heat. I am sure Vince was very happy about his showing on Smackdown!

I hope he has a good feud with the Big Show, somehow over comes him and then gets into it with Rey and or The Undertaker. He said in an interview his dream match would be Undertaker and Rey in a triple threat match, I think that sounds like a good Summerslam match.

erickman 05-02-2010 01:47 PM

i get the angle heel vibe from him, an big show is a good one for swager to fued with. i loved the angle show fued an if show treats swager like he did angle it will be gold.

The Franchise 05-02-2010 02:07 PM

Initially I think it was hate but he has only been improving, so now it's just good ol' heel heat.

legendkillerRKO 05-02-2010 02:53 PM

im a big swagger fan...at least in the ring...his matches with edge, jericho, orton, morrison and taker were all really good...he just needs to work on his personality...in ring the guy has major talent

Oh shit.

You just acused a TPWW favourite of not getting a genuine reaction. I will pray for you.

Nark Order 05-02-2010 04:42 PM

I think part of the appeal of the Gutwrench Powerbomb is that it IS inconsistent and that it constantly looks like a struggle to get the move off. It almost looks better after the initial struggle because it looks as if Swagger counters his opponents struggle with brute strength to get the move off. I'm a fan.

Johnny Vegas 05-02-2010 05:13 PM

Always loved Swagger, no homo, when he started. Check the past threads/posts. I believe ABT and Juan and someone else, can't remember, distinctively pointing him out back in his ECW days. Hope there isn't going to be a "bandwagon" forming soon...

XL 05-02-2010 06:38 PM

The reaction to Swagger on SmackDown! reminded me a lot of Vickie's reactions. Most here have stated that she is a "great heel" and that her reaction is legit heat not genuine dislike.

Joesgonnakillyou 05-02-2010 06:44 PM

with X-pac/Big Bossman heat, the boos sound sort of bored. Swagger didn't get that, he got active hate. I think crowd love to hate him rather than just hate him.

Despite the no build up, he's done well, looks like he belongs and has been booked well. I've always liked him and i think he's working

Which is why it's pointless to argue the matter.

I like Swagger, I don't think he deserves where he is, but he's a solid wrestler who could be worthy in the future.

This is exactly what I was thinking when I heard his promo on SmackDown!. I hope the heat for Swagger continues. You just know that Vince is all wet to have a guy working for him that is actually wrestling and getting Vickie heat.

I also have to agree with Jordan, and state that Swagger's promo style is hilarious to me. From what can probably be called "Jack Facts" to his good ol' boy, over-rehearsed promos that sound like a speech for a graduation ceremony. And it's not that Swagger can't cut a promo. His one recently about going for the head of "The Viper" and being "the antidote" to its venom was amazing.

I would definitely suggest that Swagger successful defend the World Heavyweight Title against Big Show, and then go over Rey Mysterio before moving into a feud with Christian.

Faces have also attacked the boss and drank beer.
Hopefully this is a sign things are going in the right direction.

That was for a different audience. They were aiming at a group of middle class people who would have loved to stick it to their bosses. They were also of a legal drinking age.

Regardless, I'm struggling to find a real life scenario for any age where it's cool to make fun of somebody's natural born shortcoming.
