Super 8

So this is another top secret JJ Abrams project that was just announced. It's going to have a trailer attached to Iron Man 2, but until this week nobody knew anything about it. For the most part, people still don't know anything about it.

There's a few unconfirmed spoiler reports about what the trailer reveals, but it's not much. I kind of wish I didn't read it, but it might not even be true.

Some are also saying that it might be the JJ Abrams/Steven Spielberg project that they've been wanting to do.

The secrecy and hype surrounding the whole thing is similar to Cloverfield. I'm really curious to see what it is.

News? Thoughts?

I hope the hotel chain makes them change the name.

Jeritron 05-05-2010 10:43 PM

Obviously it has to do with Super 8 cameras

They won't leave the light on for ya.

thedamndest 05-05-2010 11:22 PM

Well I've wiki'd it and come up with zero. That's about as far as I can go on this.

Jeritron 05-05-2010 11:24 PM

Shit like G4 and Aint It Cool News are giving this round the clock coverage. It's their Gary Condit

Jeritron 05-07-2010 05:54 PM

The trailer was far from what I was expecting. It was awesome, but a big suprise. Everyone seemed to think it was going to be some kind of teaser of footage shot on a Super 8 camera.
That would seem logical, given the title and the fact that nobody knew anything about it.
I was shocked by how something like this could be kept a secret, seeing as it involved legitimate produced footage and special effects. How does a fairly large movie directed by JJ Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg stay a secret?

Kalyx triaD 05-07-2010 06:03 PM

Something wants out of that trailer.

Jon Kano 05-07-2010 06:08 PM

I dunno if the title has anything to do with the type of camera, seems too predictable.

I like Cloverfield, and when it comes to marketing, JJ has got it nailed.

Will be keeping my eye on this.

Jeritron 05-07-2010 06:11 PM

Have you seen the trailer? I think there's something to do with the camera. It's not going to be shot on one though

Hanso Amore 05-07-2010 06:19 PM

I hear rumors that it is a normal perspective, but follows a group of teens making home movies on a super 8, and they witness something crazy.

Jeritron 05-07-2010 06:25 PM

Well, something crazy is witnessed in the trailer and a group of teens making movies is in no way involved.

Jeritron 05-07-2010 06:25 PM

It's up on youtube right now, but will probably be down very soon. I'll post it in spoiler tags for anyone who wants to catch but you probably don't have long

Jeritron 05-07-2010 06:26 PM

SPOILER: show

Jon Kano 05-07-2010 06:53 PM

Yeah I saw the trailer, and saw the significance of the camera, but I dunno, sounds more like a secret code name or something, prob not knowing me.

So is this the film being made where a bunch of kids happen to stumble upon Area 51? because if it is, I'm already questioning the notion that you simply cannot 'stumble' onto Area 51. It's one of the most notoriously guarded secrets, not to mention in the middle of fuck all. But then it did show a train, and there are train tracks and runways used to get there and back, so I guess it came from Area 51 on the train and it crashes nearer to a town?

Swear someone else was making a film actually called 'Area 51' also.

But I'm pumped nonetheless.

Jeritron 05-07-2010 07:34 PM

Well it mentions being set in 1979. I'm not sure when the US Government actually admitted to having a base at Area 51, and started posting the perimeter, but they denied it for a while and would enforce things more subtlely than just posting signs and fences.

Jeritron 05-07-2010 07:38 PM

It still doesn't appear on any US Maps, and NASA is specifically instructed not to photograph it from space. It's the only area or base that has such instructions.
Seems pretty foolish considering that everybody and there brother knows it's there now.

Yea. Isn't it supposed to be from the creator of Paranormal Activity, and more or less the same style?

That would seem to be very similar to a bunch of kids videotaping something on their super 8 camera.
They're also both distributed by Paramount, and Spielberg was the one who got Paranormal Activity in theaters, so I doubt they'd both be about the same thing.

Jeritron 05-07-2010 07:48 PM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_51_(film)

Super 8 can't possibly be the same thing. I bet those rumors originate from this project, or have been cleverly crafted to shroud what Super 8 is really about.
Clearly it will be about something involving Area 51, but probably not the exact same thing.
I wouldn't be suprised if there was way more to it than we think. Area 51 is probably just where the story comes from, not where it takes place.

Jon Kano 05-07-2010 07:48 PM

So the government admits it exists but won't confirm it's place in the Nevada desert, next to Groom lake I believe. I always look at it on Google Earth its pretty cool. I have been interested in Area 51 for a long time.

Pretty sure I remember watching one of the many documentaries that it has a perimeter fence like 50 miles out surrounding it with a message saying anyone found with a camera in the desert could be imprisoned, and anyone who crosses will be shot.

Yeah true, thats what I meant with the train coming from Area 51, and crashing en route to another facility.

Got the typical 'this is the sequel to Cloverfield' rants going about also. Something to consider? I doubt it.

They apparently have underground motion sensors that can detect any movement near the perimeter.
Also, there are no reported cases of anyone being shot or killed for crossing the perimeter but somehow I doubt that.
I'm not the biggest conspiracy theorist in the world, but Area 51 has been a lightning rod of attention for decades now and someone has to have attempted to cross that perimeter. I don't doubt any governments ability to sweep a killing or disappearance under the carpet to avoid the hassle.

JJ Abrams says adamantly that it's not a sequel, prequel or anything to do with Cloverfield.
He could always be lying to keep things a secret, but I agree with you. I doubt it.

He says it's meant to be like the early Spielberg films of the 70s (Jaws and Close Encounters)

Kalyx triaD 05-07-2010 08:01 PM

I thought Area 51 was decommissioned some time ago (because of all the infamy).

Jeritron 05-07-2010 08:02 PM

Negative.

Jeritron 05-07-2010 08:04 PM

Although common sense would say that anything shady going on in there would have been moved by now.
Unless the nature of what's going on in there specifically has to take place in that location for some unknown reason. Either that, or it's kept operational and tightly guarded to distract from the fact that it's been moved elsewhere.
Or they're just hiding in plain sight.

Who knows really? I'm not leaving sleep over it but there's certainly something to it all

Kalyx triaD 05-07-2010 08:09 PM

That's where they come up with new Mountain Dew flavors.

Hanso Amore 05-08-2010 10:02 AM

This film hasnt even entered Full Production yet apparently.

This trailer was made outside of the film, bu JJ during one of his other projects to keep it secret.

This is not any form of scenes from the movie.

SO

My rumor still works.

they shut down Area 51. train crashes. thing escapes, kids find it.

Jon Kano 05-08-2010 01:29 PM

Everything coming from 'your rumor' is actually in the trailer except for the kids.

Jeritron 05-08-2010 01:36 PM

and the kids come from the rumor that was going on all week about what actually happens in the trailer. It was derived from the plot of the Area 51 movie that's coming out, and probably has nothing to do with this

Jeritron 05-08-2010 01:38 PM

I still find it impressive that he managed to shoot a trailer of that quality, for a movie developed by him and Steven Spielberg, and keep it a secret until now.
I'm aware that it's a teaser using footage made specifically for the trailer, but either way it's legitimate and hard to believe they could sneak this past everyone in this age.

Hanso Amore 05-09-2010 12:35 AM

Oh its crazy jeri.

Im sure anyone working on it signed a gag order
