Toronto Blue Jays, Contenders or Pretenders?
 

I love watching MLB, it is one of my favorite things to do in the summer. Taking my chair, my Spitz, and a beer and watching some Blue Jays baseball, nothing better. Anyway, 43 games into the season and the Jays sit with a record of 25-18. Good enough for 3rd in the AL East, and one game back of the Yankees. So my question, are they good enough to make a push for the Wild Card this year?

Nah I'm afraid there gonna tank sooner or later there roster just not deep enough to be a contender.

Maybe in another division they'd have a shot. But with Tampa, NY, and Boston...things don't look too good. However, I wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

I love the Jays as much if not more than anyone here. They will do better than people predict, however they are re-tooling right now and can't contend all year.

They have no chance being in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox.

You'll pull ahead of the Yanks and Sox for a while. Then they'll buy the all-star teams, like always. Then you're SOL.

i mean, not everyone in that division is gunna win 85 games. I have to believe the Sox will wake up and make a run and the Yanks and Rays arent going anywhere.

Toronto's 1st in the majors in team slugging so far and 26th in OBP. You've gotta figure those numbers will eventually come closer together with the result being less timely hitting and less victories. Let's face it, Edwin isn't gonna slug .700 the whole season. Alex Gonzalez's numbers are already coming back to earth. I can't see Bautista hitting 35 homers but he might. But who knows what's gonna happen since Toronto's done so well without the help of Lind, Hill, and Overbay? I still think they'll level out though.

Plus they're 1-5 against Boston and 1-2 against Tampa, and they haven't even played the Yankees yet. So all that seems to suggest they won't keep pacing at a .574 win %.

That being said, when they do eventually regress, I don't think that will be an indication that they aren't a good team, because they've got a fair amount of talent.

80-85 wins seems like a fair projection to me. There are only 3 really good teams in the AL this year (I'm not sold on Detroit yet) so even if Boston does hit their stride, Toronto can still beat everyone besides Tampa, New York, Boston, and Minnesota.

Yah. The one problem being, that 2 of the 3 best teams in the AL are in Toronto's division. And neither are the Blue Jays.

There were 4 teams in the AL East over .500 in 2008. It's not that rare. Chill.

But yeah they're gonna tank around mid June I'd say, or at least immediately after the all star break, unless someone really starts standing out throughout the whole year.

Huge fan of the team..... but their pitching will let them down after the all-star break and not even 5 HR's a game will overcome it..... they might compete for 3rd place in the division......
