What sports figures do you respect most?
I guess from each sport, or just one if you want to commit to that.
|
|
Wayne Gretzky is the 'best'/most dominant/greatest sports figure ever in my eyes that hasn't played football for Manchester United.
|
|
Paul McGrath. Any guy that can be the best player for club and country, and the best player in his league, while having no knees and a world class booze problem deserves respect.

ECG stole my answer.

|
A lot, but Ken Griffey Jr., Cal Ripken Jr., Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Bobby Orr to name a few

|
|
Michael Jordan for being a cold hearted ruthless bastard.
But pretty much Allen Iverson is number 1 on my list. |
NBA: Jordan - I HATED the Bulls with every ounce of my being...especially John Paxson. In fact, I STILL HATE John Paxson. But Jordan was THE GREATEST and I have nothing but respect.
NFL: Reggie White - My favorite player of all time and honestly one of the better guys the sport ever produced. Kurt Warner would be a CLOSE 2nd. MLB: Mark Grace - My favorite player of ALL-TIME, bar none. I can't imagine spending my childhood watching anyone else hit on a daily basis. He still colors my life with his classic color commentary everyday, and I appreciate his greatness so much more than anyone else. Second would definitely be Junior. I never really cared for Seattle particularly, but Junior is on a complete other level as a player and a person. NHL: Gretzky - I don't pay attention to hockey whatsoever, but is there anyone else? Really? |

This guy not only saved the Penguins as a player, he came back and saved the team as an owner. And he's tried to save the Pirates, but Bob Nutting wants to kill it so badly Mario's not getting the chance. |
John Rocker

NFL:
Steve Young - Entire career shadowed because he came after Montana for QB in 49ers due to lack of titles. Barry Sanders - If it wasn't for the fact the Lions were horrible to make him lose interest in football and his respect for Walter Payton, he would have broken the total rushing yards record years before Emmitt Smith did. MLB: Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripkin Jr - Both were very humble, had long careers, and never switched teams even during the years the Padres and Orioles were horrible. Gwynn lucked out on a title because of the Yankees 1990s dynasty and Ripkin because of the fan catching a ball and it got called a HR in 1996. |

After this years NHL playoffs Ian Lapperierre gets a TON of respect from me. One of the throwbacks in the NHL.

Numero 66! My childhood hockey hero. I stopped watching hockey for 3.5 years when he first retired, and since he retired a 2nd time, I really don't care about hockey that seriously anymore (although I still watch HNIC). I still have the front page article from my local paper from the day Lemieux was diagnosed with hodgkin's. The man fought through so much physical adversity and pain over the years. Also, gotta respect that when he came out of retirement, he was initially paid the league average salary, not some elite player amount. Considering that he owned the team, he could have immediately returned as the highest paid player in the league, but he knew better than that. Lemieux was always a humble, reserved player, never a showboater, or media seeker. |

I know he died about 40 years before I was born, but just from learning a lot about him as a person and a ball player, I respect the guy so much. Very humble human being and one hell of a player. Plus he's from the same city I am. |
