ESPN 30/30: June 17, 1994

Quick shout out to how great these 30/30's have been this year. Wish they would do a DVD box set of these.

Anyway, did anyone catch last night's? One of my favorite episodes they've done. It brought back so many memories. For those who missed it, the documentary highlights all the sports happenings back on the day of June 17, 1994. This includes the OJ Simpson chase, the Rangers Stanley CUP Parade, The Knicks/Rockets NBA Finals Game, Ken Griffey tying Ruth's record for quickest to 30 homeruns in a season, Arnold Palmers last golf tourney.

I didn't realize at the time how many things happened that day. but holy shit. From Coast to Coast you had a ton of sports things going on. The documentary kept going back and forth between everything. The coolest thing was watching all the different news medias covering the OJ Simpson chase and how channels actually got mixed up with one another because of all the radio wave interferance going on. So like you could have on ABC, but get the NBC people broadcasting. lol

anyway, it was awesome. go check out the replay if you can.

Yeah it was great.

Since I was only 9 the whole OJ chase is kind of foggy, but watching that last night was really intense. Game 5 of the NBA finals was a pretty good game to, and they still had to cut away from it.

Also it's really hard for me to fathom how popular OJ was before the whole murder thing. It's really weird to me.

Innovator 06-17-2010 03:22 PM

It was awesome. Now I remember why I was up late watching the OJ chase, because I was watching the Finals.

Loose Cannon 06-17-2010 03:26 PM

yea, I was 11, so you kind of look at things in a different perspective. I didn't even know who OJ Simpson was back then other then he was a football player. I don't remember feeling "holy shit, OJ Simpson is fleeing the cops" that day. It just didn't hit me that way. I had no clue about Arnold Palmer until last night. I remember the Finals very well that year. (fucking Knicks). However, I don't remember the Rangers Victory Parade being that same day.

McLegend 06-17-2010 03:29 PM

How bout the commercial at the end with OJ and Arnold Palmer?

I think it's safe to say Arnold got off pretty easy.

Loose Cannon 06-17-2010 03:34 PM

lol yea.

Also, the World Cup was going on around the US as well that day

OssMan 06-17-2010 03:37 PM

I was in preschool and I know this kid who tells me that the one time he came to my house was when there was a ton of OJ Simpson coverage going on and it was probably this day.

McLegend 06-17-2010 03:38 PM

Yeah I have hardly any memory of the World Cup in the US.

Loose Cannon 06-17-2010 03:41 PM

yea, it's funny cause this was the year I had just got into soccer. And it wasn't because of that, it was because I had just moved to a new neighborhood in NY (New Rochelle, NY) and there was a lot of Mexicans in the neighborhood that played soccer.

At the time though, I just thought the World Cup was every year and it was awlays held in the US. lol. I do remember the missed Penalty Kick by Baggio though. Remember that like it was yesterday.

Innovator 06-17-2010 03:43 PM

"Did you hear OJ was in the US Open? Yeah he's 2 under"

No way that flies today

Loose Cannon 06-17-2010 03:49 PM

haha, that was the announcers at the KC/Seattle game, right? yea, they were horrible

McLegend 06-17-2010 03:55 PM

I loved the Bob Costas stuff.

He really had no clue what to do. He looked really nervous.

Loose Cannon 06-17-2010 03:58 PM

yea, he was sweating and looked like he was going to pass out

Innovator 06-17-2010 04:21 PM

I liked the part where the 8 year old said he could die in peace after the Rangers won

McLegend 06-18-2010 07:59 PM

Al Cowlings was hilarious btw

"You know who I am God Damnit!"

He might have said motherfucker but I don't remember.

DVD set probably comes out once they've done all 30 films since there are 3 left that haven't shown yet.

"Based on footage from the series' general trailer, two of the final three TBA titles will be about the life and death (from AIDS) of NASCAR driver Tim Richmond and the Boston Red Sox' comeback against the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS." (from wikipedia)

You read the page wrong. They've only shown half of the films, with a new one being shown tonight.

I've watched all of them so far and they've all been fantastic. Reggie Miller's was probably the highlight for me so far, with this one not far behind.

Was wondering why you missed that out.

Yeup mistake on my part, I just read the number of films they've already announced and not the dates themselves.

Love these, been meaning to mention them for a while. Although anybody know where I can get standard def/.avi versions of them? Got the first 7 some time ago bunched together in a torrent, the Ice Cube/Raiders one and this one (June 17) individually. Everything else I come across seem to be HD/.mkv file and it's a pain in the arse waiting a fuckload of hours for each one to convert to .avi

Jimmy the Greek :(

I really wish Columbia beat the USA in 94.
