Rate The Movie #1: Jaws
I was looking at IMDB's Top 100 and Bottom 250 and had an idea, why not create something akin to a top 100 (or whatever) on TPWW sort of like Better Wrestler but not putting movies up against each other.
Process is simple, rate the movie by choosing a rating in the poll. At the end of the voting session, votes will be tallied and an average will be given and recorded in a list. This will not be flooding the forums as it is my intention to put one out every 3-4 days (maybe Wednesday or Saturday) Definitely open to suggestions, however I ask that movies released in the last 6 months not be used since some people may not have seen it and to be fair to them, so they dont stumble upon spoilers. Feel free to discuss memories, opinions and the such on the movies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley's novel of the same name. The police chief of Amity Island, a fictional summer resort town, tries to protect beachgoers from a giant great white shark by closing the beach, only to be overruled by the town council, which wants the beach to remain open to draw a profit from tourists during the summer season. After several attacks, the police chief enlists the help of a marine biologist and a professional shark hunter. Roy Scheider stars as police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss as marine biologist Matt Hooper, Robert Shaw as shark hunter Quint, Murray Hamilton as the Mayor of Amity Island, and Lorraine Gary as Brody's wife, Ellen. Jaws is regarded as a watershed film in motion picture history, the father of the summer blockbuster film and one of the first "high concept" films.[1][2] Due to the film's success in advance screenings, studio executives decided to distribute it in a much wider release than ever before. The Omen followed suit in the summer of 1976 and then Star Wars one year later in 1977, cementing the notion for movie studios to distribute their big-release action and adventure pictures (commonly referred to as tentpole pictures) during the summer. Jaws is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. It was number 48 on American Film Institute's 100 Years... 100 Movies, a list of the greatest American films of all time, dropping down to number 56 on the 10 Year Anniversary list. It ranked second on a similar list for thrillers, 100 Years... 100 Thrills. The film was followed by three sequels, none with the participation of Spielberg or Benchley. A video game titled Jaws Unleashed was produced in 2006. |
One of my favorite movies.
Started the summer blockbuster and try to watch it at least once a summer. Always makes me nervous swimming in the ocean afterwards. Has some great well known lines as well. Hard to believe this movie is 35 years old too. |
Possibly my favorite movie ever
|
love the movie. huge Quint fan
|
What happened to Better movie?
|
honestly just saw the entire thing for the first time a few weeks ago, i see how it was considered a great movie, but i just had trouble getting into it
|
I'd have to give it a 7 which is a lot more than i'd give the sequels.
|
I like to pretend there were no sequels.
My life is better that way. |
I think it's pretty well established that the sequels are garbage, especially compared to the original.
I don't think anyone really thinks of the sequels when they think of the original, and they certainly don't have any negative effect on it's legacy. It's funny how bad they are though. |
I didnt know until like a year ago that there was more then three of them.
Goddamn I hate finding shit like this out. Like discovering then star wars christmas special all over again. |
Off the top of my head I would give it an 8. Haven't seen it in a long time though. I would probably appreciate a proper, non-commercial viewing in its entirety.

I think there have been some bootleg shark movies sold illegally with the name Jaws on them, but Universal has only produced 3 sequels with the name and music and everything. The last being Revenge, with Michael Caine. |

solid thread idea btw
gonna go with a 9 for Jaws. absolutely loved it, but not going with a 10 on the first round |
I am hoping to comprise a top 100 and have the rest of the list as well.
|
go 4 it j trizz
|
I don't usually give out 10s to movies in spaz mode, no matter how good I think it is. It just so happens that Jaws is on a list of movies that I can count on one hand that I love enough to call my favorite/give a 10.

My mother and sister were at Martha's Vineyard last weekend and brought me back a "vintage" Jaws shirt with the poster on the front and it says Amity Island on the back. Thanks mum and sis

Jeri, are you able to sticky threads in this forum?
|
The first movie isn't a sequel. That makes 3 sequels
|
*Slaps Forehead*
I thought I posted that I found out there was more then 3 total, not 3 sequels. My B. |
I am going to pop in Jaws right now
|
Honestly if you haven't seen Jaws The Revenge you should probably watch it. It's one of the worst movies of alltime but it's a must see.
Michael Caine wasn't present at the Academy Awards to accept his oscar in 1989, because he was in the Bahamas filming it. |

When I was a kid, I rented it from the video store and found that on that version Mario Van Peebles lived. On the version I had that was taped off of Saturday afternoon television, he didn't. I was pleased with this development. If you're wondering why I'd rent movies that I had taped off of TV already, I can't really give you an answer. Sometimes my parents would take me to rent a movie, and I'd give up and just rent something I'd seen a million times and maybe even owned. |

This is the TV ending. As you can see, the shark explodes instantly from being rammed with a ship mast. They even edit in a shot of the shark exploding from the first movie, which sticks out like a sore thumb. The rest looks like a miniature I made in my bathtub. Mario Van Peebles lives. He would later portray Solo and direct an episode of Lost. |
7.
Good film, and probably the scariest of all time. But today it's kinda long-winded and hard to watch without losing interest. Especially most of the boat scenes when the three guys (can't remember their names) are just chatting. |

Without those scenes it's not an all time classic and Quint is just a nut instead of one of the biggest badasses in cinema history.
|
Any suggestions for next round?

Loved the film, always hated visiting swimming pools because of it.

One of my all time favorite movies...i give it a 9..
Had it all... The Fear The Score The Suspense and The Wait, for the moment we would see the shark Also, Quint's Indianapolis Speech is a great segment. In fact, the discovery channel made a documentary on the Indianapolis during Shark Week a few years back. I always thought it could have been cool to see a sequel with Richard Dreyfuss as the lead. But not now, let the classic stay a classic. As someone already said, hard to believe this movie is 35 years old |
10.
One of my all time favorites for all the reasons people have already said |
