Rank a Wrestler #1 - Rey Mysterio

I get confused on where TPWW ranks wrestlers. This isn't meant to rival "Better Wrestler" or anything, just helping everyone get a feel for where everyone truly ranks wrestlers. Also be able to tell who has been jumping on bandwagons and what-not. First up...

Don't only vote, but give a bit of a description about your vote. I'll start. When I was younger I loved Rey. He was always the underdog and did high risk things that were oh so cool. His lucha libre style is unique about him as far as him being one of the few in the WWE that do something like that. But lately it seems that Rey's character is a bit dull. I personally love character development. The bit with Rey's family was okay but it seemed slightly forced. I do, however, like that he expresses himself through his costume. The joker get-up last year for WM and even the Avatar stuff this year was cool. His matches are getting more and more predictable though, which may be a result of the 619. I think a different finisher would make me like him more, but I would keep the 619 in his move list. He doesn't seem to be taking quite as much risk as he used to either. I think he's better then average so I'd give him a 6.5 if I could, but I'll round up because my avatar is smiling. If I find out that the WM costumes were a product of the WWE machine and not his doing then I'll go down to a 6.

Poll coming

DAMN iNATOR 06-21-2010 05:19 AM

I'll give him a very generous 2.

nice description there :\

All round fantastic wrestler, and pretty much busts his ass every time he's in the ring. Unfortunately he's had the same gimmick pretty much his entire career and it is incredibly stale. Desperately needs to turn heel.

I used to love watching Rey,in WCW. Once he joined WWE I wasn't overly excited, but it was nice to see him on tv, but now time has passed and it's kind of painful. Not only is he stale, but how badly his body is beaten up just makes it impossable to believe that he can bring back any old/new moves to the ring, then what he has now. I'm hoping he'll be going in the next few years.

This, with the exception I rated him on his highest point because I still have a soft spot for him and I have enjoyed his feud with CM Punk.

My only problem with him is the over-use of the 619, but it makes the kids pop so I can't really complain.

6, one of the better in ring wrestlers I can think of right now. Lack of mic skills and 1 dimensional personality bring him down to a 6 for me though

Nicky Fives 06-21-2010 09:38 AM

Rey Mysterio is a solid 8..... well above average, but never seen as "the best"

Jeritron 06-21-2010 09:42 AM

Rey Mysterio is an example where becoming successful and winning a world title magically turns him into a worse wrestler among the IWC.
If Rey Mysterio hadn't become a main eventer in WWE and won the strap, everyone would be talking about how great he was and rating him a 9 or a 10.
It's not as though all of those accomplishments and talents don't exist

Ermaximus 06-21-2010 10:04 AM

While I'm not a huge Mysterio fan, mainly due to his size and previously said overuse of the 619, I will give him credit for being a solid performer. He does bust his ass, and apparently others faces, and he also is over as shit with the kids. With that I'd say he's a good 8-8.5 for me.

This. It's really quite ridiculous how the IWC turned on the guy in 2006. Yes, his title run appeared to be a bit of a gift, his storyline leading up to the reign was complete exploitation, and he was booked shittily during his run...but it's not his fault. He's always been a very good hand in the ring, and I'm glad he now has another title reign that appears to be more "legit" and not one that was a gift.

maggledog 06-21-2010 10:33 AM

I gave him a 6 because hes better than half the roster, but the same old gimmick has gotten just old... I feel I can predict his moves, in order, as consistently as I can Cena's.

The Gold Standard 06-21-2010 10:41 AM

7.

He puts on good matches every week. However, I am not a huge fan of him being World Champion, but I enjoy his matches and he is better than most wrestlers.

thedamndest 06-21-2010 01:28 PM

His best days are behind him, but he's still got a lot to offer. It does depend on how he is booked. As long as they keep him wrestling guys within eight inches of his size he's good. Otherwise it's too much of a stretch.

Obama needs to turn heel.

At first I found myself being indecisive on what to base my vote upon:

If I'm placing consideration over his entire career, then for me Rey would rank a 9. His accomplishments and in-ring ability (especially when taking into account his stature when up against much larger opponent). I've been impressed by him since before his days in WCW.

But if my vote were to be based on his recent actions, then Rey would only achieve about a 7. The reasons for this have already been mentioned in not only this thread but in other discussions as well, and personally I don't care for the 619.

With that being said, I believe a solid 8 is the best choice. Rey may be former shell of himself but I still see him being better the most midcards, and even a few of the main eventers.

jskinnyg 06-21-2010 03:06 PM

Rey was once my favorite ones to watch as well... But just as any high flyer or performer in the ring for that matter needs a longer career, they end up slowing down & becoming predictable. I can't fault a man for wanting to lengthen his career and keep the big $$ coming in... Solid 7...

Good god you are awful.

VSG 06-21-2010 06:34 PM

Apparently BDC hates Rey more than DAMN iNATOR.

CSL 06-21-2010 06:35 PM

BDC hates everybody.

Tazz Dan 06-21-2010 06:36 PM

I agree with Nicky Fives, definetly a solid 8. Sure the 619 is old and predictable but the kids love it and that's how his character is pushed during this PG era. He still goes hard in the ring and pulls off better matches than the majority of the talent. Jeritron also hit the nail on the head with his post. If Rey hadn't been given the title after Eddie died a lot of people in the IWC would still be pulling their dicks/flipping their beans over him.

MoFo 06-21-2010 06:42 PM

He had great matches with Jericho and Ziggler last year, and has had a library of classics to rival anyone. 8 at least.

The Franchise 06-21-2010 07:10 PM

I think Mysterio has become ridiculously underrated by the IWC since winning the world title in 2006. He was easily one of the WWE's best workers from 2002-2005 and he's had lots of great matches in WCW and a fair amount since 2005, which is when he cooled off and has been pretty "blah" for the most part. I think it might be a combination of his overall match quality declining at the same time as his botched world title reign which has led to everyone shitting all over him.

I went with 7 because while he is good in the ring and is a draw, his mic skills and charisma are pretty terrible...

Razzamajazz 06-21-2010 07:46 PM

he was awesome pre-wwe, when all his matches essentially became the same thing

Skippord 06-21-2010 10:14 PM

I probably should have gone with a 7 actually

7 corresponds better with my write up

XCaliber 06-22-2010 01:05 AM

He's a definite 8 he's past his prime but still a very solid worker.
