In which sports are we currently looking at the greatest player?

I quite like these kind of thread because I get to learn little tidbits about sports I don't care about.

Off the top of my head you got Roger Federer who's just phenomenal, Usain Bolt who holds something like 8 of the top 20 100m times and 5 of the top 20 200m and is clearly a massive freak who just decimates all before him.

After that you've got Woods for the golf, obviously hasn't caught Nicklaus yet but lets face it he will so I'd have him in there.

I'll throw Phil Taylor in because theres such a frankly ridiculous gap in talent between him and the rest of the darts world despite darts being a tenuous one to throw in here given they are all fat pissheads.

Triple Naitch 07-16-2010 05:19 PM

Albert Pujols, Kobe Bryant

Ogen 07-16-2010 05:22 PM

I didn't learn any tidbits there, no idea who Pujols is even. I've googled him and he is a baseball player. Despite my ignorance to the sport I'm not having someone who's name I've literally never heard before is the best ever surely

McLegend 07-16-2010 05:26 PM

Nadal is better then Federer.

What about Messi(sp) from Argentina? Is he the best football player in the world?

Supreme Olajuwon 07-16-2010 05:27 PM

Albert Pujols is not the greatest baseball player ever. Kobe isn't the best baller either although he's a lot closer than Pujols is.

Peyton Manning will probably go down as the greatest quarterback in NFL history.

Triple Naitch 07-16-2010 05:32 PM

I misunderstood the questions. Thought you were asking who is the best player in their sport right now.

Ogen 07-16-2010 05:34 PM

No best all time that happens to be currently playing

Ogen 07-16-2010 05:36 PM

Hes best in the world right now, certainly in the top 2 of my lifetime in my opinion only one that can challenge him in terms of brilliance is fat Ronaldo in his prime. He'll have to do it for longer to be considered better than your Maradona and Pele's though. He'll really need to drag Argentina to a world cup I suppose.

Triple Naitch 07-16-2010 05:39 PM

Two years ago I would have said LaDanian Tomlinson. He was bound to break every single scoring record. Then he fell apart and is a backup on a new team.

McLegend 07-16-2010 05:39 PM

Yeah I fucked up to.

Even though he probably won't be e greatest ever, bu he wiill be the 10-5 best players ever. i' m holding out hope he will be the best player ever though.

Kevin Durant of the oklaholma City thunder. I'm telling you Ogen you will want to follow his career. He plays in the NBA.

The Mask 07-16-2010 05:40 PM

ronnie o'sullivan is another obvious one, i suppose.

The Mask 07-16-2010 05:42 PM

i think anderson silva probably has a good shot at being the best ever p4p mma fighter, but he has the same batshit insane thing going on that o sullivan has half the time.

Triple Naitch 07-16-2010 05:42 PM

I wouldn't call Messi the greatest. It seems every two years there is always a new greatest player in the world. Ronaldino was given the name before him, Ronaldo, etc.

Ogen 07-16-2010 05:49 PM

Yeah but of those 2 you've compared him with one of them was the best I've ever seen until Messi this year.

McLegend 07-16-2010 05:55 PM

Then as for Tennis. Federer is better then Nadal all time obviously.

I don't know if Federer is the greatest tennis player of all time though. I don't know if this makes sense, but he is probably the most well rounded player ever. He was at either 1 or 2 on any surface, and he has a career grand slam. However if you put Sampras up against Federer both in their primes on Center Court at Wimbledon... I think Sampras wins.

I think Sampras serve would just over powerful anything Federer could throw at him.

OssMan 07-16-2010 09:54 PM

I think Pujols will break most hitting records. Kobe Bryant is not even close to being the best of all time. Manning will probably the best quarterback when he retires.

Ronaldinho could have been one of the very best ever if he wasn't such a 'party boy'. I'd watch him at his peak over Messi anyday. I've never seen anybody do some of the things he's done and I've never been so in awe of a single player whilst watching him play. Easily the best player of my lifetime, even if it was only for about 18 months. Messi's probably the best atm though.

st pierre is efficient. seems like he is unwilling to take any kind of risk in order to cement 'his legacy' and has become a bit dull to watch because of it.

Juan 07-17-2010 05:04 AM

Ogen 07-17-2010 05:15 AM

You've underlined currently like thats the relevant point to all of this there Juan. Are people still confused by the question somehow.

Juan 07-17-2010 05:24 AM

No I get it, I know how to read, that's why I said no one will ever be better than Jordan, but I think Kobe deserves an honorable mention because it may be 100 years before we ever see another Jordan.

DaveWadding 07-17-2010 05:57 AM

LeBron is the greatest of all time.

Just ask LeBron, he'll tell you the same.

Bad Company 07-17-2010 08:22 AM

We've seen some phenomonal cricketers, the likes of tendulkar, lara, warne. Certainly regarded by many as the greatest ever.
For rugby, players like Daniel Carter, Richie McCaw, could all come pretty close

Gertner 07-17-2010 10:48 AM

You could argue that Martin Brodeur is the greatest goaltender in NHL history. I know some don't agree, but he's definitley top 3 at the very least.

RP 07-17-2010 11:35 AM

Peyton Manning easily

PAUL SCHOLES is better. But I have the privilege of watching him every week. still got it. great season last year for him.

He's not even the best now. Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady (debatable because he cheated), Bret Favre (not currently, but taking the overall body of work), are better current players. Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw are better all time. Manning may be a better passer statistically, but not a better Quarterback.

Reason:
Joe Montana-

Terry Bradshaw-

CSL 07-18-2010 12:31 AM

Fuck off is Ben Roethlisberger better than Peyton Manning. Brady is debatable and I'm a Favre mark but lol Roethlisberger.

Rev. Hallowell 07-18-2010 12:41 AM

Sure, LOL Big Ben all you want. 14-0 & made it to the AFC Championship game his rookie year, Super Bowl Champion his second, repeated in '08. 2nd youngest QB to play in a Super Bowl, youngest QB to ever win it. Twice as many rings as the great Manning.

If Stats mean more than that, Vinnie Testiverde is one of the all-time greats.

CSL 07-18-2010 12:46 AM

I know that. I'm not saying he's a bad QB, far from it, he's just not Peyton Manning.

By your definition, Matt Millen is the greatest linebacker of all time.

Quick, somebody get him into Canton. Fucking hell.

No chance is Nadal better than Federer. He matches up well against him because Federer's only weakness is the high backhand...the spot Nadal can most easily hit to.

BUT TO ANSER THE Q

Federer, Michael Phelps, Woods...That's all in my books.

Kobe is a great player but no way would MJ go 6-24 in a game 7. Kobe also had a few other crappy games that series

CSL 07-18-2010 12:56 AM

I hated Michael Phelps for the longest time then did a complete 180 and fell in love with him when won that race at the Olympics where the first time he took the lead in the entire race was when he touched the wall.

Linebackers aren't the leader of the team, nor to they have the ball every play.

CSL 07-18-2010 01:13 AM

So Trent Dilfer is a better QB than Dan Marino?

Jeritron 07-18-2010 01:19 AM

No, but Joe Montana is

Jeritron 07-18-2010 01:19 AM

Peyton Manning's statistics are honestly amazing. There's no doubt about that, or his legacy, but I'd honestly much rather have Tom Brady quarterbacking my team

Probably not, but Marino never had decent players around him either. Manning doesn't have that excuse. Just the opposite, if Manning had taken his mind off his own stat sheet and let Edge run the ball more, he may have more Super Bowls.
