Randy Orton

Let me preface this with...well...this:

I enjoy the current "state" of Randy Orton. The sociopath, taking out anyone he likes, not always for a discernible reason. This is the first version of Orton I have enjoyed since RNN.

That said...

Every time I see him wrestle now, I wonder "how long until he breaks?" I tense up watching him bump at all because I fear his next hit may be his next broken shoulder/collar bone. Watching him pull every strike against the mat, now, when he's "coiled to strike" with the RKO nearly makes me cringe due to how obvious it is.

Bottom line: I, personally, can't see him as a legitimate threat these days due to how fragile he appears.

Am I 100% alone on this?

BizarroKing 07-18-2010 02:18 PM

Randy rapes the competition!

Afterlife 07-18-2010 02:20 PM

And dislocates his shoulder in the process.

I beg to differ.

Snowden 07-18-2010 02:29 PM

Didn't he dislocate his shoulder against Edge in their match a couple of months ago "coiling" for the RKO? Ever since then, it seems like he's pounding the mat a lot lighter, and generally taking it easier on the bumps.

Xero 07-18-2010 02:30 PM

He's definitely pounding the mat softer. I haven't noticed much difference in his style otherwise, though.

Yeah, he's been hitting the mat lighter since the injury. Compassion for the mat.

Yes, that's what I said.

I've barely seen him do ANYthing since then. It seems as if he's a little afraid to do much. I expect him to take a "big bump" early in the MitB match and then disappear for much of the action.

The adaptations of the RKO are pretty decent with him. These days you don't see many dapper changes to finishers. FFS, The Walls of Jericho is a Boston Crab these days :(

Troelar 07-18-2010 02:44 PM

I haven't seen much difference. Only really noticed his new found love of the mat as he caresses it.
Maybe it's just that you know why he's pulling his punches to the mat, and that sort of makes all the other aspects of his persona come off a bit flawed.

This is very much the case. That's why I'm asking if nobody else shares my perspective. If I'm crazy, that's fine. It's just been bugging me for a while.

Afterlife 07-18-2010 02:53 PM

As for that video, he barely moved his right shoulder at all to perform that "amazing" maneuver, and even his celebratory downward fist thrusts look notably ginger.

ministrychick77 07-18-2010 02:54 PM

well with his shoulders being double jointed/hypermobile he has to be careful. injuries to places like that take more work to come back from.

i learned this when my knee got fucked up. still messes with me.

What does it do to you?

ministrychick77 07-18-2010 03:00 PM

makes it easier to get injured. sometimes also limits what you can/can't do. maybe orton's dealing with this now..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermobile
i'm hypermobile in my fingers and knees.

The Pope 07-18-2010 03:01 PM

My knees are horrible too, stupid squatting!! I tried squatting 600 lbs and my knees gave up.

Bob Orton Jr. was one of the toughest/best workers out there.

I kind of agree, cause I watched the Maryse match. And there was a pussy in that match.

Did you even see any of the matches of yesteryear? People had body slams as finishers. That simply doesn't work these days, and so having less technical stuff aired on tv does not make anyone a pussy.

I'm just saying that the "new age" of wrestlers, mostly in the WWE are spoiled. I refer mostly back to when Orton slapped the crap out of the mat, and dislocated his shoulder, or whatever he did to himself. In some sports, football and hockey mostly, when a guy dislocates his shoulder or another part of the body, they pop that bitch back in place and keep playing for the passion of the game.

You do realize that Orton technically finished the match where he dislocated his arm, right? Even took a spear?

Oh, hogwash. I'm not calling Orton a pussy at all. I'm only saying, I think he knows he's more fragile than he wants to let on. In fact, that means he's displaying a large amount of toughness, by going out and trying to work. He took a VERY long time getting over his first shoulder injury, and then had that nasty collar break. Those injuries lend themselves to recurrences, and it takes a brave guy to risk them; I just think it's shining thru that he KNOWS it's a risk.

Mooияakeя™ 07-18-2010 03:36 PM

Best RKO was still on RVD.

I seriously think it's just a case of him "sitting up" n mid air, to lift his neck. I could be wrong, but after a while looking at it, that's what I get. Either that or he's pushing up with his hands.

The Pope 07-18-2010 04:01 PM

Wow, i think he does it by kind of doing the what would be a handspring but with only his shoulder blades.

Xero 07-18-2010 04:01 PM

Watching it a few more times, he has basically no push from his arms or hands. All I can think is that it's like a vertical kip-up, because his legs are definitely an integral part of it.
