Re-Watched Mortal Kombat

out of boredom. It was cheesy, campy and very silly. Still fun though. If Uwe Boll did this with all of his video-game movies I think people would like him better.

Mortal Kombat was good in a (I'm a 13 year old boy who is only watching this because I own a Sega Genesis) way. Had the exact plot, soundtrack and characters from the game. Lots of ridiculous kung-fu.

Also, this was the last time Johnny Cash ever got to kick someone's ass.

Kalyx triaD 07-19-2010 02:05 PM

Cage. Johnny Cage.

The Jayman 07-19-2010 02:12 PM

Rayden

BigDaddyCool 07-19-2010 02:16 PM

Quit killing Johnny Cage.

M-A-G 07-19-2010 02:20 PM

It's easily one of the best video game movies ever, right up there with Tomb Raider and Silent Hill. Pokemon, too, I guess if you're into that sort of thing.

M-A-G 07-19-2010 02:20 PM

Although now I challenge you to re-watch Mortal Kombat: Annihilation out of boredom.

I just don't see why/how you can expect anyone to do that. You are wrong as fuck dude.

But MK, is, freaking amazing

I stopped watching after Johnny Cage died.

Emperor Smeat 07-19-2010 04:57 PM

Not counting animated films, Mortal Kombat still is one of the best video game films mostly because the film stayed close to the original source and was entertaining.

Haven't seen Postal but I've heard its supposed to be another good video game film since its as crazy and gory as the game itself.

VSG 07-19-2010 08:14 PM

Lol@Johnny Cash although as I continue to think about it, that would have been a better name.

Razzamajazz 07-19-2010 10:54 PM

the nostalgia critic does a hilarious fucking review of this and street fighter

El Capitano Gatisto 07-20-2010 04:43 AM

No. They took the two most iconic figures of the game and fucked them up. Scorpion and Sub Zero. I remember being very disappointed at that, despite everything else being quite good.

Funky Fly 07-20-2010 04:49 AM

Yeah WTF @ them being lackeys, and not murderous ninjas who hate each other?

Kalyx triaD 07-20-2010 04:59 AM

They hate each other in the sequel (good fight too). Does this work for you?

El Capitano Gatisto 07-20-2010 05:02 AM

There was just no need to make them slaves. Everyone knows that Scorpion and Sub Zero are the two best characters and the most recognisable in the whole series. Messing them up was simply inexcusable. Absolutely no need for it.

Kalyx triaD 07-20-2010 05:36 AM

Unless you had no time to service them. And the movie worked regardless.

Jeritron 07-20-2010 05:56 AM

Every movie involving comic books, video games and martial arts worked.

Rammsteinmad 07-20-2010 07:01 AM

I liked Annihilation. But both films were good, although very campy and over-the-top.

I didn't like it either, but I understood why they did it. Putting the scorpion/sub-zero subplot in there, probably would have rushed the rest of the story, and everything would have felt jumbled together, I imagine.

Anyone who played the games would have known the full backstory with Scorpion and Sub-Zero, there would have been no need to go into it. In the end they just slotted them in pointlessly anyway, but in a very aggravating, stupid way. It ruined the film for me, particularly the stupid endless snakes coming out of Scorpion's palms.

Kalyx triaD 07-20-2010 10:39 AM

The movie was meant to attract more than people who played the games, though. And Scorp's hand demon was awesome.

I kinda felt the same way about Rayden. Don't get me wrong, Christopher Lambert played him very well as the guide/mentor to Kang/Blade/Cage but he was my favorite character in the game and he didn't even have one fight scene. He did in the flop of a sequel but that doesn't count b/c it was just......terrible.

Yes, so what difference would it have made had they been true to Scorpion and Sub Zero's characters? Would that have switched people off or something? Answer: no. They basically included every backstory bar those two, cashing in on the images of the characters rather than what made them the best part of the Mortal Kombat series. What ever way you try to spin, it was extremely disappointing.

The hand demon was rubbish and a massive hook on a rope would have been way better.

Kalyx triaD 07-20-2010 11:24 AM

"Extremely disappointing" is kinda strong, especially in light of a damn good movie. You still saw Scorp and Sub get some decent fights. Shang explained their 'truce' in the scene that introduced them. And absolutely nothing happened in the movie that tarnished either of their images (Ryu and Ken the con men, anyone?)

You're tripping.

Schlomey 07-20-2010 12:01 PM

I love MK1...now Annihilation is horrible.

It was a joke, hence the word 'challenge' being inserted there, as in "This movie challenges my very sanity and existence as a human being."

I know alot of people who did the same thing. Of course since the movie is a take on the events in MK 3 and Cage dies during that time, it was SOMEWHAT logical, unlike, say, the rest of the damn movie. I mean, what the hell were the three tests Liu Kang had to go through? Getting knocked out by a tomahawk, getting his ass kicked by a woman, and then channeling the power of Clash of the Titans?

Greatest...Shit...Ever

The choreography, the editing, the music - this scene blew my mind. Some of Chris Cassamasa'a fights in the TV show were cool too.

Kalyx triaD 07-21-2010 02:40 AM

I remember the behind the scenes special where the fight choreographer said the difference between MK's fights and the other Hollywood fights was that these characters were actually fighting; no wasted moves or flash. No effort to show off a particular martial arts style, just what a character would do given a situation.

That kind of 'dirty martial arts' was last seen in the Blade series, but now everything's 'pretty'.
