Vince McMahon: The Commentator

I've been watching some of the early In Your House PPVs and my God does Vince suck at the table.

His ridiculous "breathless" voice when the action gets going really grinds my gears. And then there's the "1....2....YES! No." with every 2 count.

What did/do you think of Vince's commentary? Where would you rank him amongst the greats of yesteryear and today's current crop?

Xero 07-21-2010 06:13 PM

WHATAMANUVER!

VSG 07-21-2010 06:14 PM

He was a good colour commentator, something that is sorely lacking these days.

Xero 07-21-2010 06:15 PM

I liked him. He pushed things well and had decent timing. He was a little ridiculous at time and it wasn't masked like how JR was ridiculous at times so he came off a bit "groan-worthy" at times.

Average at worst, good at best.

Xero 07-21-2010 06:16 PM

He was pretty great when he and Ventura called that Battle Royal last year. But that may have been more Ventura than Vince.

SaskatchewanChamp 07-21-2010 06:17 PM

He was Good.

Xero 07-21-2010 06:18 PM

No one asked you, SzechuanBeef.

dhellova guy 07-21-2010 06:34 PM

He was ok, but corny at times.

If I wanted your feedback, I would put a naked guy on the screen and see you type away at what you would do too him. I didn't post that, thus no feedback from you.

Nicky Fives 07-21-2010 06:48 PM

I all have to say is....... UN-BE-LIEVABLE!!!!!

On a serious note, Vince was a'ight

Xero 07-21-2010 06:52 PM

I don't want to ruin a fine thread made by my pal XL, so I shall post a picture of Vince McMahon to get things back on track.

Maybe I'm being a little overcritical. He is a decent commentator but the things I mentioned in the opening post just detract from him in my opinion.

Granted all commentators have their "thing". JR had "BAHGAWD" and Cole has "VINTAGE [insert name here]" but with Vince it was numerous times in every match.

Testicle 07-21-2010 07:06 PM

He was good, the things that need to get over, he got over. Sure he could be annoying at times, but don't base this just off of his pairing with King and JR.

rated rjo 07-21-2010 07:12 PM

I'll take Vince over Cole any day.

jskinnyg 07-21-2010 07:19 PM

You can't mess with Vinnie Mac... I enjoyed him on the mic...

WOW. WUDDYA TAKE A LOOK AT THAT!

addy2hotty 07-21-2010 07:33 PM

"HA HA HA HA!"

Apart from that laugh, he was pretty epic as a commentator when I first started watching. I remember him being outstanding commentating on the Undertaker attacking Hogan before Survivor Series 91 and when Roberts attacked Savage with the snake.

"THAT SNAKE BETTER BE DE-VENOMISED!"

But as time got on, he became far cheesier and biased towards the faces - Wrestlemania 10 and when Michaels flew from the rafters down to the ring were pretty horrid.

"OH WHAT A RIDE!"

BollywoodSingh 07-21-2010 07:37 PM

Technically, he was pretty terrible but I liked him on the mic. I liked his voice, but that might more due to nostalgia than anything else. I think he did a good job of getting things over. I would put him miles ahead of Michael Cole.

However, the whole "1....2....he's got him! No!" on every single pin attempt was too much. He would even do it on a simple suplex followed up by a pin attempt.

bigslimjj 07-21-2010 07:39 PM

I used to laugh everytime yoko or earthquake would sit on someone he'd yell really loudly."And down to the chest he goes!!!"lol brilliant.

Loose Cannon 07-21-2010 07:41 PM

I have a biased opinion because my fav times in wrestling was when he was on commentary, but I liked him. I love watching the old shows today and every time the other commentator would screw up or when a backstage interviewer would flub a segment, I always think Vince must of been pissed. It would be hard to sit next to the owner and do commentary.

The Pope 07-21-2010 07:54 PM

Vince McMahon - "Kane!, that's gotta be Kane!"

thedamndest 07-21-2010 08:07 PM

It depended on who his partner was. A little went a long way with Vince so having a strong partner was better. He didn't need to try to oversell a guy.

Vince worked very, very well with Ventura, Heenan and Lawler (and to a certain extent, Mr Perfect and Dok Hendrix). With other partners, not quite so well, but he is certainly an underrated announcer.

Sure, he got a little overanimated at times but I would far rather listen to a commentator who is excited and enthusiastic about the product than listen to the Cole, Lawler and Striker team make casual, cringeworthy quiet conversation and virtually ignore the match.

Vince was over the top, but he could make a squash match seem like the main event of WrestleMania. Plus he had an ethical authority about him as a moralistic commentator that was only surpassed by Gorilla Monsoon.

Jesse Ventura - SHUT UP MCMAHON!

NeanderCarl 07-21-2010 08:29 PM

Oh... myyyy... Goodness! Anything can happen in the Dubya Dubya Eff!

Un-BE-lievable!

Kane Knight 07-21-2010 11:20 PM

I loked him. I mean, I loked him more than I heted him.

Droford 07-21-2010 11:22 PM

I'll always remember "HES GONNNNNNA PUKE!" even though he wasnt commentating at the time he did it in his commentating voice.

XCaliber 07-21-2010 11:27 PM

From what I remember he was rather good but nothing special.

Supreme Olajuwon 07-21-2010 11:56 PM

He got on my nerves sometimes but he wasn't bad. He definitely added a lot of energy to everything.

FakeLaser 07-21-2010 11:57 PM

AHMED.... YAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

voncouch 07-22-2010 03:03 AM

He wasn't the voice of my childhood like Heenan and Gorilla, but he was the voice of the early days of Monday Night Raw. He could get a little goofy and, looking back, at times even groan worthy, but I think he did a good job setting the tone for the audience the WWF was going for in the mid 90s.

"WELCOME EVERYONE....TO MONDAY NIGHT RAWWWWWWWW!!!!"

"BAAAAAAAAAAAACK BODY DROP!!"

I thought Vince was a decent commentator but he was a tad cheesey.

still not in the ranks of JR and Joey Styles.

he wasn't as good as JBL or Tazz

Seth82 07-22-2010 09:01 AM

when paired with Jesse Ventura on saturday nights main event I thought he was great

his announcing from the 70's was alright and not as whacky as he later got

bostonbill41 07-23-2010 07:44 AM

I miss the old days when Vince was on the Saturday morning show and they'd have promos for the local shows.

He's the best IMO. It's his company and he put everything over the way he wanted it to be put over. He was insanely in love with HBK which was hilarious but really helped him out at the time. Sure he was corny but so is WWE for christ sake.
