Starting to hate WWE promos (SD-related)

Watching SmackDown! right now, the opening promo with Kane, and I'm hating it. They're essentially turning live promos into extended video packages with cut-ins and background music. It makes it seem like literally a soap opera segment than a wrestling promo.

I wouldn't have so much of a problem if this was for one specific character, but other guys are getting this treatment. Jericho, for instance, has different lighting along with other guys. At first I liked it, but the promos like Kane's just completely ruin the whole concept for me.

And it's not just promos. McIntyre's entrance is similar. Although I do actually like it, it seems that this over-produced segment is becoming the norm.

I know this whole stylized production has been kind of gradual (it's been happening for a year or so) but it's just getting to be too much for me. The best way I can put it is that it's late 80s WWF with better production values.

Video below (it's the first promo):
<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/X2cDnFBDnOQ&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xd0d0d0&hl=en_US&feature=player_detailpage&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/X2cDnFBDnOQ&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xd0d0d0&hl=en_US&feature=player_detailpage&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Discuss this trend.

Schlomey 07-25-2010 02:16 PM

I typically hate over produced segments and angles but I fucking LOVED Kane's segment on Smackdown this week. The flashback vids and the crescendo's in the background music. I don't know why I chose to like this one but it really did add to Kane's demented state and he came off as a fucking psycho. Rarely do I disagree with you but in this instance I'm cool with the overproduction...but as a whole I think your right takes you out of the realism.

Mr. Pierre 07-25-2010 03:07 PM

Wow, that promo was pretty awesome. I didn't mind the music/over production in this case, and I felt it really added to it. I mean, WWE is a circus as it is, I don't think some background music or clips are gonna have anyone take it less serious.

jskinnyg 07-25-2010 03:12 PM

I hate the over production as well, and I had a Love/Hate for the Kane promo as well... I thought what he was saying was a great F'ing promo, but the music was exactly was Xero said, like a soap opera... But then again, I have always said that wrestling is a soap opera for dudes anyway so what the hell...

I just thought the music was not needed at all for the promo that he was cutting... And Kudos to the WWE for letting Kane keep the title for more than a week...

itsmeJD 07-25-2010 03:14 PM

Yeah I usually don't care much for overproduction but I liked the promo...plus it's Kane. The guy had to endure the 2,678 shitty angles they gave him, Katie Vick, being unmasked, etc...I say let em overproduce for him, it'll probably be his last big run on top.

Schlomey 07-25-2010 03:14 PM

Kane was one of the only guys that that kind of thing works for though. It made it even more menacing.

Remember when he debuted and he wrestled with the lights off and a red spot light? Same deal. Not everyone could pull that shit off but luckily he plays such a dark character that it works for him (and undertaker) to have special effects...it is kinda a given with his character.

XL 07-25-2010 03:22 PM

I won't say I didn't notice the music and it was a little jarring/odd at first but all in all I think it really worked for the promo.

It's nothing worse than the shit they pull win Taker (appearing in mirrors so that not only his opponent can see him but so can we!?) all the time.

itsmeJD 07-25-2010 03:24 PM

LOL, kinda like when Warrior was playing "mind games" with Hogan before Havoc 98? That shit was retarded. THAT is the kinda bullshit I could do without.

Schlomey 07-25-2010 03:24 PM

now one overproduced undertaker segment i couldn't stand was when Taker had Teddy Long in the limo...way to much going on in there..it made me cringe.

And all the times Kane is shown backstage under a red light interrogating suspects for undertakers vegetative state....that is lame.

itsmeJD 07-25-2010 03:27 PM

I really keep hoping and praying they're gonna throw a curveball with the vegetative state angle, but it's WWE so of course it will have been Kane all along...

LOL true. For all the shit he's taken with a smile, he should get a full orchestra everywhere he goes.

This was a bit much.

Juan 07-25-2010 07:06 PM

I hope Dolph Ziggler wins the IC title soon.

VSG 07-25-2010 07:08 PM

The 2nd pool needs updating, amigo.

Juan 07-25-2010 07:10 PM

Yes I know this, jerky.

thedamndest 07-25-2010 07:31 PM

That Kane promo would have worked just fine with just the reddish light.

Agreed.

TGR 07-25-2010 08:34 PM

The overproduction of Kane/UT's work has been one of the last throwbacks of the Attitude era that we've had. It's erring on the side of cheesy nowadays, but it's still something that's been pretty common for those two characters. And yet, UT and Kane dont have any problem pulling such promos off. It's actually entertaining to watch.

Swiss Ultimate 07-25-2010 09:09 PM

I just hate all back-stage segments that pretend they're not being filmed.

Juan 07-25-2010 09:10 PM

Awesome promo

On the flip side, I hate when TNA does the "wait a few minutes talking then "suddenly" notice the camera" angles.

thedamndest 07-25-2010 09:24 PM

Promos that involve wrestlers saying things under the assumption that the opponent will not watch the footage later. Like when Maria thought Dolph was cheating on her. Why didn't she just watch a TiVo'd Smackdown?

on the flip side of your flip side I do like TNA's "behind the scenes" type segments where you see people chatting and walking ect....

lol they should have end smackdown with that 3 minute clip originally

Black Mask 07-26-2010 12:17 AM

It was a good promo.

As others mentioned.... the utter bullshit the character has been through, (Baby with Lita/Loss of said Baby, or 'Offspring' as it were, hasn't been mentioned yet) the guy deserves a legitimate title run. Vince's run was longer in the books then Kane's.... C'mon...

Besides, it was a nice cap to see him get eight minutes of promo time to put over the fact that he's World Champion now, like most champ's do... just, he had background music instead of confetti. Call me crazy but it would have been fucking retarted to have Kane walk out smiling and thanking everyone in sight.

It's not a new, WWE, PG, over-production, thing. Wrestling has been a soap opera for 12 years now, so you should probably get used to it.

screech 07-26-2010 12:03 PM

I loved Kane's promo.

The cut-ins were cool, but it still would have been great without them. The light (and music in this case) would have done fine.

Actually, I think I'd like that background music for all of Kane's promos.

TGR 07-26-2010 06:52 PM

Watching (on Shotgun Saturday Night) Undertaker sacrificing Dennis Knight remains one of the most significant parts of my youthful wrestling nostalgia.

I went back and watched it a few weeks ago. It was the cheesiest bunch of crap I've ever seen (though I cant tell if Taker was legit blading himself or Mideon or not), but it was amazingly effective at the time. Although, it was robably the highwater mark for the edgier WWE programming (and may have even triggered the gradual turn to less edgy programming). So there's that too.

Londoner 07-26-2010 07:03 PM

I know what you mean xero, fucking hated Kanes promo.

FourFifty 07-26-2010 07:05 PM

...is that Harley Quinn licking blood off the wall in your sig?

Lock Jaw 07-27-2010 06:48 PM

Loved Kane's promo, complete with music and cut-ins.

And obviously my opinion is the only one that counts.

You do realize you'll be the one banned, not me, right?

It's how the forums work.

Not even being cocky here, it always works out that way. Anywhere else, I would have been banned long ago. But this isn't "anywhere else".

(Fully expecting a joke ban now, for the record.)

VSG 07-27-2010 08:04 PM

Ok I got another chance for posting in here, what I failed in that other thread. There are Xero-marks and there are these guys:
