Why do they carry the briefcase with them?

I mean, to hang it from the rafters makes sense, but once someone wins a MITB briefcase, why carry it around everywhere?

The commentators mention it as the MITB briefcase that has a contract in it. Why not just take the contract out and put it away somewhere safe?

Jus saying... carrying a briefcase everywhere (in kayfabe) looks annoying.

Xero 07-26-2010 12:34 PM

It's a good prop for them to have.

Though, has the briefcase ever been opened? Maybe there's no contract in it and the case itself is the contract.

Thats why.

Rammsteinmad 07-26-2010 12:37 PM

But surely he could have just taken the contract out and put it in his pocket/held onto it/stuffed it in his tights etc.

VSG 07-26-2010 12:37 PM

Prince Albert and before him I.R.S also carried briefcases. This is just a mimic.

Schlomey 07-26-2010 12:39 PM

i agree with xero. It's a good prop especially for a heel.

Xero 07-26-2010 12:40 PM

Why do they carry their belts around? Seems silly to drag them out to the arena unless it's a title match.

whiteyford 07-26-2010 12:49 PM

I just always assumed it looked better than waving a piece of paper at someone.

Schlomey 07-26-2010 12:49 PM

and it helps the effect of the gimmick and helps the PPV concept get over as something very valuable.

Maluco 07-26-2010 12:51 PM

I have always thought about it like a trophy. It is a bit like a title and carrying the briefcase around is like carrying the trophy around to remind everyone of what you accomplished.

I think it also adds to the excitement of the cashing in moment. The fans have their eyes on it and they pop big time when it is given over to the ref.

Ok, maybe I should have done this thread differently and asked, what would you guys do? As I said, I'd just take the contract and sell the briefcase or something... maybe give it away at X-Mas or something.

Xero 07-26-2010 12:53 PM

They need to start filming vignettes with Miz carrying it around with him. At air ports, in malls, in restaurants, etc. At the end of every one they pan to see what he's looking at and it's Sheamus. Basically turn him into an obsessed stalker.

It could get to the point where once Sheamus loses the title he's so obsessed with Sheamus that he feuds with him instead of worrying about cashing in.

Schlomey 07-26-2010 12:54 PM

i totally agree with that.

MIZ CAM!

Honestly, I'd carry around the briefcase. If nothing else it acts as a trophy and a weapon.

I'd take the contract out, though, in case the briefcase gets stolen.

Make Miz famous, Sheamus.

Majunior 07-26-2010 01:12 PM

The briefcase is a great visual. Keeps the contract safe, works as a weapon, the item itself is a huge reminder of what the bearer accomplished.

To be honest, it reminds me of Owen carrying around his Slammy Awards. Or -- as mentioned -- anyone who has ever walked around with/worn their belt when they weren't headed to the ring for a title match.

Aguakate 07-26-2010 01:59 PM

EASY. Inside the briefcase is the contract...and if they just carried the contract itself, or inside a folder, it would get ruined...so inside the briefcase, it's safe...

...Who knows, though? Maybe inside the briefcase, is another smaller briefcase...that contains an even smaller briefcase.

I'd fill it with bricks, hit the champ with it, and pull the contract out from my pocket.

Aguakate 07-26-2010 02:22 PM

All wrestlers who wrestle for Titles, esentially, for kayfabe purposes, have "signed" contracts to compete for the respective belts...

...it would be funny if every wrestler who had a title shot at the next PPV, for ANY title (Tag Team, WHC, WWE Championship, etc) would walk around with briefcases, waiting for the PPV to come around.

PS: It would suck if IRS found out that, throughout all the time walked around with that briefcase, there was a WWF Championship contract in it, and he never bothered to look.

I fail to see the humor.

Which are, in KAYFABE, generally not needed on a moment's notice. Outside of the MitB shot, few (if any) contracts are cashed in on a moment's notice anywhere, any time.

Within that context, it makes sense.

Also, few title shots are won in this sense. The big exception is the title shot at Mania one wins for being the last man standing in the Rumble, and that's still a fixed instance at a fixed time.

The briefcase makes sense as a status symbol in this instance, a reminder that "I've got a golden ticket," so to speak.

Brigstocke 07-26-2010 03:36 PM

I'd love this to be built into an angle.

You have to 'have the briefcase with you' in order to cash it in. Would be epic if the champion at some point wasn't due to appear on a particular RAW so Miz left the briefcase back at the hotel.

The champion comes in as a surprise and gets 'dismantled' by somebody unexpectedly. Miz runs out to cash in/claim the title then realises his faux pas.

Schlomey 07-26-2010 03:37 PM

that is kinda how it is brigstocke. Every time the MITB has been cashed in you always see the guy hand it to the ref on the spot...

No, it never has been, and there's really no reason for them to. They've made it clear over the years that it contains a contract, and thus most people just assume the contract is contained inside, although it's entirely possible the briefcase itself could be the 'contract', and none of us would be any the wiser.

itsmeJD 07-26-2010 03:40 PM

I think Imma go with they carry the briefcase with them because Vince told em to. Final answer...

Xero 07-26-2010 03:49 PM

I'm sorry, the correct answer was potato salad. Potato salad.

itsmeJD 07-26-2010 03:52 PM

Damn it! I know I shouldn't have asked the audience....potato salad was actually my second guess. Oh well, guess we can end this conversation now that you've ruined it for everyone still playing :-)

Y2Ant 07-26-2010 04:18 PM

The briefcase is really filled with shredded newspaper, like Lionel Hutz's. :shifty:

I don't think anyone would accept a contract taken out of a guy's tights.
