How many people know of John Cena outside of wrestling?
 

How many people who don't watch wrestling actually know who John Cena is? I've always heard that one of the big reasons Hogan is the "biggest" is because he was known outside of wrestling for being "THE" wrestler. I'm not disagreeing with it (I do agree with it), I'm just wondering about Cena.

Does Cena have this same celebrity? And does he have it to the extent Hogan did at the height of his first run (let's say Mania 1 to Mania 7)? If not, how known is Cena?

Depends on the age range. I think if you're talking 30 and below, he's well known. But as you get older (say into the 40s, 50s) Cena is much much less of a celebrity. For example, turned on RAW and Cena was on there, and my dad had no idea who he was.

From my experience, not many. A few people I have met remember him as a rapper.

Hogan was in Rocky III, Cena was in 12 Rounds. I think that pretty accurately sums up the popularity gap between the two.

None of my non-wrestling friends know who Cena is. All of them know Hogan. I don't think Cena is as big as the WWE wants to think he is.

Nobody knows who he is. Him and Batista did signings at Woolworths over here in UK before Mania 23 and the shop used The Rock, HHH and Taker in their promotional stuff for it. Everyone was coming out going 'who the fuck is this guy, wheres Rock'

Cena isnt well known at all really, most of the people I talk to that dont follow wrestling have no clue who he is.

Everytime I talk to a non-wrestling fan, they call Cena the "You Can't See Me" guy. I believe he's more known for that than mostly anything else, also being a Marky Mark Look-A-Like as well.

Noone knows of John Cena outside of wrestling here.

Cena seems pretty well known outside of wrestling around here. It could be because he's actually from around here though.
Either way, he's nowhere near as well known as Hogan, The Rock or Austin, or even Flair or Undertaker.
I'd say he's probably as well known as Shawn Michaels or HHH are/were, and maybe Bret.

I dunno. It's hard to accurately judge something like this at all, but those are some rough ideas on the matter.

Everyone's mentioning Hulk Hogan (which is fair enough), but what about Steve Austin?! Who didn't know who Steve Austin was back in '99/2000?

But in regards to this thread, the only non-wrestling fans who know who Cena is are girls that probably saw some lame topless pic of him in a magazine and now have a crush on him. I knew a girl like this in college. :nono:

Alls I can say is hes not that well known around my parts, but if WWE keeps putting him in staring roles in their movies, who knows?

I honestly think that is their strategy, to make him a giant movie star so that everyone knows who he is. Hell, Hogan got popular off of crappy movies like Mr. Nanny and Santa with Muscles, why cant Cena to it with the Marine and 12 Rounds?

The only wrestlers my girlfriend has ever heard of is Hulk Hogan and The Rock. I remember having this conversation with her and being dumbfounded that she didn't know Steve Austin as well.

That's a lie. Seriously, EVERYONE knows Steve Austin! Everyone.

That's what I thought. I figured maybe she would recognize the person but not the name but when I showed her a picture she was still like, nope, no idea.

I just write it off to her being French. Just like everything else.

Yeah well my grandpa knows him, but only as "that guy from the razor commercials". I've told him his name plenty, but that Alzheimer's only lets him remember the damn Proglide, go figure.

A LOT has happened since 1993... Cena's been the WWE poster boy since then & #1 Super Face... In 1993 I would have agreed with you MoFo... But now, the guy is HUGE and is making a run for Hogan's title of most known wrestler on the planet...

At the rate he's going he might get there... But when it's all said & done, Hogan was the 1st... He just really needs to hang it up...

Austin would be "somewhat" of a name, like for casual fans or people who remember the confrontation featuring him and Tyson, but nowhere near Hogan or Cena. I think it also matters WHO you ask like Snowden said. If you ask a bunch of kids, they'll know Cena, but not really Hogan. If you do the "Hogan" pose in the gym like I did
