It's been a while, so let's rehash a classic: Mic Skills!
Who's got em? Who needs em? Let's hear from you, the TPWW Universe!
If I had to rank my top 5 (just WWE cause I haven't been keeping up with other stuff lately): 1. CM Punk 2. The Miz 3. Chris Jericho 4. Sheamus (LOVE this guy on the mic. We can giggle at his accent but he's got great poise, great presence, and great delivery) 5. Santino Marella |
|
All the below impress me on the mic.
The Miz Chris Jericho Wade Barrett Cody Rhodes Jack Swagger Honorable mention to Jay Lethal and Alex Riley on NXT. John Cena on the mic feels lazy and forced at the moment. Drew McIntyre, Ted DiBiase, Kofi and John Morrison could all do with some mic skills, given increasing involvement. |
Jericho > Current Roster
|
The only person you should add to your list there is Kane. He has been extra creepy the last 3 weeks on the mic.
|
Rhodes is awful.
|
Jericho
CM Punk HHH Miz Cody Honorable Mentions: Wade Barrett, Kaval (both acknowledged for pure bass) |
Rhino
|
1) Punk
2) Jericho 3) Barrett 4) Miz 5) Swagger Kane's been great as well too. |
Punk
Jericho The Miz Sheamus Wade Barrett It's funny, because that's exactly what my top 5 current overall were in another thread a couple weeks ago |
1. Flair
2. Jericho 3. CM Punk 4. Foley 5. Cena |
My top five TODAY:
1. Chris Jericho 2. The Miz 3. CM Punk 4. Barrett 5. Santino Marella Top 5 of All Time: 1. Ric Flair 2. Chris Jericho 3. HHH 4. Kurt Angle 5. CM Punk or Arn Anderson |

For me the best guys on the mic are (in no particular order)
Punk The Miz Wade Barrett Jericho Cena Vince McMahon Dibiase's getting there. Drew's almost there. Sheamus is good enough but far from great. The Hart Dynasty needs it big time and so do the rest of the SES with the exception of their savior. |
Of recent times?
Wade Barrett The Miz Edge (when he gets going) John Morrison (when he was with the Miz! - Why don't they let him be the full on Shaman any more?) Jay Lethal (vs Flair lately) |
The top two for me are easily Jericho and Punk.
Miz is right up there as well, just give him some main event exposure. Same goes for Barrett, I think he's incredibly talented on the stick. As for the last spot, I'll go HHH...but if we're only going purely active alone, I'll actually say Cena. Everyone trashes him, but truth me told he's incredibly charismatic, and he's only delivering what the writers give to him. His funny/serious dichotomy is meh, but thats the material he's been given, and he's done well with it. |
Punk and Jericho are clearly the best at the moment. The Miz is up there as well. Sheamus has looked more confident and Cody deserves to be included as well because he's pulling off the shit "dashing" promos incredibly well. (he's so much better than Ted in every way)
Swagger is great as well at the moment. Barrett, to me, is where Sheamus was when he first started, ok but just needs to be a bit more comfortable and that will come in time. |
Kane
Punk Jericho Sheamus Miz Not necessarily in any particular order. |
1: The Miz (slowly becoming one of my favorite wrestlers and amazing on the mic)
2: Jericho (ALWAYS a great person on the mic. Between old Y2J stuff and new stuff of him hating everybody, it's golden) 3: Sheamus (something about his promos, they're just funny fella) Sadly I don't see much else in the way of promos that I fully dig. Granted Wade Barrett's got good on the mic, I'm not fully sure how I feel of him. |
Punk
Miz Jericho Edge Tarver |
Best promos in WWE right now
Punk Cena Jericho Barrett Miz who needs work? Morrison Bourne Drew McIntyre |
My promo favs are
1. Jericho 2. Punk 3. Barrett 4. Miz 5. Sheamus Cena comes off like a preacher at times which is annoying as hell and John Morrison sucks, especially as a face. Also Matt Hardy should stay away from a mic....but maybe he's gotten better of late, I don't really watch Smackdown much anymore |
Jericho, Miz, Santino, Punk (Heel) are probably the top guys who have the mic skills in WWE right now. Especially Santino having to say all the stupid things he does with that accent and not bust out laughing, because if you don't think that takes great mic skills your crazy.
|
William Regal should really be speaking for someone. The guy is so amazing on the mic -- he can make you laugh or send chills down your spine. The thing I am most looking forward to about Ezekiel Jackson's return, is the possibility that he'll get Regal as a manager again.
John Morrison has got mic skills, but he's just not comfortable as a face. His lines sound forced, and they probably are. Long gone are the days of "Jesus if he knew kung fu." It's a shame, because that is the Morrison that was money in the bank. Every time I see Morrison come out with that goofy smile on his face, because he is a good guy, despite having real reasons to be pissed off, I die a little inside. Morrison is the latest guy you can add to the list of guys who have had the best elements of their character neutralised as part of a face turn. Does Morrison even have a gimmick anymore? Drew McIntyre's mic skills are fine, I feel. The character isn't much of a talker, which works in his favour, too. He's getting better and better, but it's not like he's super effluent on the mic. He does what he needs to well enough. If he wants to push himself further, though, he should learn from guys like CM Punk, The Miz, Chris Jericho, Triple H, Michael Hayes, Arn Anderson, William Regal, etc. -- guys who are celebrated for their mic skills. He could score bonus points with some guys in power this way, too. Basically, McIntyre needs to extract how to make his promos vibrate in the mind. How to emphasise certain words to get a chilling effect, and they're not just words but allusions to how sinister he really is. That is how McIntyre can really better himself. Dolph Ziggler and Joseph Mercury are two guys that I feel are overlooked as far as mic skills go. Neither is bad, but sometimes their delivery feels awkward. Like McIntyre, they just need to work on their emphasis. Mercury is lucky that he is working so close with CM Punk. If he can better his mic skills, then I feel he could be a major player. He's so experienced, really fun to watch in the ring, and still relatively young. Ziggler is fine, but he would be doing so much more if he was beyond fine. Kofi Kingston has a weird sort of intangible on the mic. He's just got this charisma about him. The guy needs to cut more promos. Sometimes his promos border onto "I'm a face, so I do what good guys do...ARGH!" but they're never terrible delivery-wise. I'd love to see Kofi really cut a promo about how much the Intercontinental Title means to him, or why being slapped by Vickie Guerrero really pissed him off. Another guy who doesn't get a chance to talk much, but should, is Christian. Now that he is playing a face, we don't see that personality that really got Christian hot in 2005. It's a shame, because the whole "dork" thing with Christian worked, and now more than ever being dorky is the new cool. Captain Charisma's serious promos are also very good, don't get me wrong, and if his "I'm fed up of waiting for my time" stuff goes somewhere, more power to him; but either way Christian just isn't being written as anything more than a solid hand in the ring right now. It's a shame, because Christian could easily be one of the best promo guys in the WWE if he were actually talking, and it will be his mic skills that would explain why he is a main eventer. |
1) Triple H
2) Chris Jericho 3) CM Punk 4) Miz 5) Kurt Angle (not many people think of him as great on the mic, but when he lets go, he's good) |
Right now:
Punk Miz Jericho Kane Wade Barrett in no real order, other than that of 'whatever-I-can-remember-first'. |
Scott Hall - he always was great on the mic and still is!
