Karl Urban Confirmed For Judge Dredd

Karl Urban has been confirmed for the leading role in Judge Dredd by producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of the new film. Urban had been rumoured for the role already, but in a Movie-Con Q&A this evening the pair confirmed that he has been cast for the film, shooting in South Africa soon.

“The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago," said Macdonald. "Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real."

"There’s been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they’re treated seriously. We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd. We’ll be shooting in Johannesburg, it’s being directed by Pete Travis, we’re shooting with the people who did District 9 – and if we get it right, Alex has a couple of ideas for other stories as well. It’s not based on any one comic, and John Wagner is involved in every decision."

Done right, the Judge Dredd Universe, with all the great characters and stories they've produced over the years could be absolutely brilliant.

Did you read the original Dredd comics prior to watching the Stallone film?

yes i did

I was a big fan of the comics growing up as they were more readily available than American comics, something I'm now grateful for. The likes of Necropolis, Bury my knee at wounded heart, America etc. are some of the best comics I've read.

America by itself is an absolutely amazing piece of work by John Wagner and really brings up the fact that Judge Dredd and the Judges are anything but comic book heroes.

When I saw the film I thought it was an absolute piece of shite and missed the point entirely.

The presence of Rob Schneider was another kick in the balls.

I'd rather not.

I hardly think it shat on my dreams. Just didn't live up to my expectations.

Amazing action film? fuck oh.

I think either option would be preferable to being a tiresome cunt.

The stallone film knew it was straying from the comics, that's not what it was meant to be, it was meant to be an OTT, kinda kitche, mega action film, it was kinda epic, I loved the mega city set.

I enjoy seeing Karl Urban in films, think this will be good enough to pay to see.

Thought that said Keith Urban at first, and I wondered why anyone thought it was going to be good.

Also, I enjoyed the first Judge Dredd and I don't give a shit about comics so that it probably why.

I actually laughed at the idea of Judge Dredd singing cheesy songs like "Kiss a Girl".
