Best Rivalries by Era
After watching some videos on here I have been thinking a bout the best rivalries. There are some that stand out leaps and bounds, some that have lead an era.
In my life the biggest rivalries were... Bret/Shawn Austin/Rock and now finally Cena/Orton You may disagree but I think these three rivalries have "the best" of the particular generation and they are undeniable. However, before Bret/Shawn what was there? What was Hogan's biggest rivalry? When did he feud with the biggest and best heel in the company for a long period of time? I can't really think of any other than the Million Dollar Man, why didn't they have a goddamn PPV blow off? I mean Andre/Hogan is a possibility and that kinda feeds into Hogan/Diabase but I am not sure. For Hogan you could also say Sting, but that pay off was so poorly executed that if you say that, your wrong. Anyway in my mind the three best rivalries in the past 20 years are Bret/Shawn, Rock/Austin and Cena/Orton. Agree, disagree, flames? Thoughts? |
Rock/HHH in 1999-2000 was pretty decent imo
and RVD/Lynn if you're not just doing WWE :o
One forgotten feud seems to be Austin/Angle, from 2001 during the invasion. Been watching all the ppv's from then and damn, that was intense.
Hogan/Macho Man, Hogan/Sting, Hogan/Andre, and Hogan/Goldberg all seem bigger than Hogan/DiBiase in the grand scheme of things.
If Y2Ant was allowed to leave the boundaries of the WWE then so will I: Samoa Joe/CM Punk for this decade.
Hogan vs. Savage was probably Hogan's best WWF feud.
Well maybe Hogan didn't have an "epic" feud the likes of Rock/Austin, HBK/Hart, or Cena/Orton, that's possible...
I am talking about feuds that speak for a generation and while Hogan/Savage was good it doesn't speak for the 80's. Maybe NWA had something going on like Flair/Steamboat could probably count. |
Sting/Flair - 1988
Steamboat/Rude - 1992 Magnum/Nikita - 1986 Dreamer/Raven - 1995 Flair/Steamboat - 1978, 1989, 1994 Freebirds/Von Erichs - 1982 Midnight Express/Original Midnight Express - 1988 Midnight Rockers/Badd Company - 1988 Misawa/Tsuruta - 1990 Tsuruta/Tenryu - 1987 Footloose/Can-Am Express - 1989 |
I would say Hogan/Andre is the best you can do for defining either in terms of the entire 80's. It was a good feud and it was a time where the kayfabe curtain hadn't been pulled back. Also both men are still two of the first wrestlers someone who has never watched wrestling will think of.

No love for the Hogan/Slaughter feud for the better part of '91?
austin v rock come on peeps
Nobody wants to mention Hogan/Piper from the eighties? The rivalry that ushered in the roc kand wrestling era and set up wrestlemania and turned WWF into a sensation.
There's also Austin/Mcmahon. It pretty much cemented Austin as an icon and fueled the attitude era. |
I'd say for the eighties, Hogan/Piper, Hogan/ Savage I also would say Dusty Rhoades/Flair,4 Horsemen. If you wanna go a little further back , Piper/Snuka and into the Seventies Sammartino/Zybysko Graham/Backlund I think...
I'm gonna go outside the box a little and say Jericho/Chyna during their IC title fued.
Angle/Lesnar certainly seemed to have an era of its own. Transitioning from the Austin/Rock era to the Cena/Orton era.
Rock/Austin
Austin/McMahon Dreamer/Raven HBK/Taker was great leading up to wrestlemania 25 I would have to say the Cena/Orton feud hasn't been bad, it has had some really stale moments though. Like gimmick match after gimmick match. I also think that if they play it out correctly Danielson/Miz could turn out pretty good. |
Although I had been watching for a few years, the Bret/Austin and Austin/McMahon feuds will always stand out for me.
shawn/bret was a real issue, most of which took place backstage or slipped into interviews. You only knew of the real tension if you were smart back then. Austin/bret had more substance to it on tv which makes it a greater rivalry. In so many instances it did feel like a shoot. The wm13 match was probably the most realistic match in wrestlemania history.
To think that bret put on a classic like that then another with taker at summerslam and vince just pushed hiim out the door. :nono: Austin/bret was a complete work but it felt just as,if not more real than bret/shawn. |
I agree with The MAC. Hart/Austin is the best feud of all time, for my money.
