games that have stood the test of time

by that i mean games you could still play now and in no way feel they were inferior (or at least much inferior) to games you play today, perhaps you even enjoy them more, or maybe the multiplayer is awesome. like i seem to play my n64 as much as my xbox 360.

road rash 2
sonic 1 & 2

super mario bros 3

Metal Gear Solid (although, I do prefer Twin Snakes. Wish it wasn't so expensive these days)

I'm very partial to PC adventure games, and as they have had their day, for me personally they have stood the test of time, as I still play them regularly.

Grim Fandango

Monkey Island games

Discworld games

The original 2 Broken Sword games.

Similarly, what current games do you think will stand the test of time?

My vote goes to Arkham Asylum right now. The gameplay is simple, yet effective. The story is strong, it has nice visuals, and Batman has been around forever, so its universal.
Plus I've recommended this game to so many people, and no one has disliked it at all.

I can honestly see people picking this up as a 'classic' a decade or so down the line.

V 09-01-2010 01:04 AM

i dislike arkham asylum >:(

Lavel 09-01-2010 01:19 AM

grim fandango was awesome but i can't really put it in here cause i can't get it to work on my new laptop :'(

The Jayman 09-01-2010 09:24 AM

Final Fight

OssMan 09-01-2010 10:50 AM

I have no idea what it means when somebody says "stood the test of time," because games like Goldeneye really haven't since it's impossible to play if you are accustomed to the current first person shooters. Same with Super Mario Kart, come on, nobody even knows what that is anymore, much less would play it over newer racing games.

LuigiD 09-01-2010 11:08 AM

I feel like Here Comes the Pain has stood the test of time. Still probably the only respectable WWE game as far as gameplay goes along with No Mercy.
Some of the Age of Empire games feel like they have also stood the test of time. The second one specially. I feel the Red Alert games have done so too.
I am surprised no one has mentioned Doom? I guess the game is becoming pretty dated as far as graphics go but I feel like the combat has not aged a bit.

I can't play half of my old PC games without running them through Dosbox. Hate setting up that thing. :(

It's the mario kart game from the SNES that spawned a bunch of the fun racing games that we got on n64, gamecube, as well as wii. And there are times where I still go back to Mario Kart just for kicks.

So I would say that Super Mario Kart has stood the test of time.

Savio 09-01-2010 01:16 PM

Mario Kart 64 > all other Karts.

I'm pretty confident I could sit down with a N64 and Goldeneye/Perfect Dark/Duke Nukem 64 and be able to play them like it was still two generations ago.

NoJabbaNoBogRoll 09-01-2010 01:47 PM

WWF No Mercy (N64)
Warhammer: Dark Omen (PC)
Resident Evil 2 (PC)
