Best & Worst - Zombie Films

New idea. Lets talk about the best and the worst films in a given genre. First up is ZOMBIES. There are tons of great zombie movies and even more god awful ones. Lets make some lists. I'll start with some obvious ones.

Best Zombie Movies:

1. Dawn of the Dead (1979)
2. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
3. 28 Days Later

Worst Zombie Movies:

1. Zombie Rednecks (Trauma Films)
2. Flight of the Living Dead
3. House of the Dead (Uwe Boll)

Rammsteinmad 09-07-2010 12:32 PM

My favourite zombie film (and one of my favourite movies in general) is the remake of Dawn of the Dead.

In an age where most films are remakes, this film had a nice touch of sticking to the basic story of the original, whilst moving in it's own direction. The running zombies were intense and made the action scenes incredibly fast paced.

I really like all of Romeo's (and Romeo-inspired remakes/sequels) except Night of the Living Dead. Probably to do with my age, but that film is just too old and dated for me. Very boring and slow paced, and the zombies are laughable, though I'm sure in '68 or whenever that film came out they were terrifying to look at.

Land and Diary of the Dead are both pretty underated movies. I like them both. Haven't seen his most recent one yet. And the remake of Day of the Dead is pretty cool. Awsomely over the top at times, but I don't mind it.

28 Days/Weeks Later are okay films, but I find it hard classing them as zombie films as they're more about crazy infected people.

Anyway, in conclusion:

Best:

Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Braindead
Return of the Living Dead

Worst:

Zombie Flesh Eaters
Day of the Dead 2: Contagium
Return of the Living Dead 4

Schlomey 09-07-2010 12:37 PM

It is George Romero...not Romeo hahahaha.

An otherwise simply great post. Thanks!

Rammsteinmad 09-07-2010 12:50 PM

Yeah yeah I know, just a typo. :foc:

BigDaddyCool 09-07-2010 12:52 PM

Shawn of the Dead is one of the best.

Furious Beardsley 09-07-2010 01:17 PM

Shaun of the Dead is one my favorites. I enjoyed the Dawn of the Dead Remake and 28 days later.

I actually sort of enjoy the Resident Evil movies, and I thought Zombieland was hilarious.

Jura 09-07-2010 01:21 PM

Reminds me that I need to check out that Nazi zombie movie.

BigDaddyCool 09-07-2010 01:47 PM

I watched Zombieland yesterday...i was unimpressed.

Hanso Amore 09-07-2010 02:08 PM

There really isnt much middle ground in the genre. You are either good, or the worst shit ever.

Best
Dawn of the Dead 2004
Shaun of the Dead

Worst
Both House of the Dead
GHOSTS OF MARS (not a true zombie flick, but close enough)

I cannot wait for that new AMC show, the Walking Dead.

It nudged Ravenous out of the #1 spot on my favorite movie list.

I love Woody Harrelson in that film!

Rammsteinmad 09-07-2010 03:21 PM

Totally forgot the Resident Evil movies. To be honest I thought they were all awful.

Called Dead Snow ----I have seen worse. I liked it but not in the "favorites" group. It's kinda in the middle. Subtitles but some really fun moments.

MoFo 09-07-2010 05:40 PM

Dawn Of The Dead (if thats the one in the shopping mall)
Dusk Till Dawn (Salma Hayek wow)
Night Of The Living Dead (good for a really old film)

I like Lost Boys as well.

Rammsteinmad 09-07-2010 06:32 PM

Lost Boys is a vampire movie.

Purgatory 09-07-2010 06:56 PM

Notable mentions:

American Zombie - Mockumentary. Basically, zombies live among the living like everyday people. They have jobs, etc...They call it "Zombie Culture" or some shit. I thought they were just people that 'thought' they were zombies, till some lady had maggots dripping from her abdomin. Then the movie took a demented turn towards the end. Wasn't great, but it was ok for what it was.

Dead Snow: Subtitles make for some hilarity. The movie wasn't that great, though.

Don't EVER watch Zombie Wars...caught it on Netflix...Got about 7 minutes into it and couldn't take it's awfulness anymore.

lol I cant explain why I put that.

Jeritron 09-07-2010 07:38 PM

It's probably easier to list the good ones. The rest is really just shit

Rammsteinmad 09-07-2010 08:13 PM

There's a zombie film where zombies are the majority and normal people are seen like the 'bad guys'. Kinda like a zombie film where zombies are good guys and humans are bad guys. Anyone know it? Seen it?

Jeritron 09-07-2010 10:01 PM

Land of the Dead?

yea they are. For some reason I enjoy them a little. I enjoyed Extinction the most. Probably won't see Afterlife until it hits the $5 rack at Wal-Mart in about 3 months.

Jeritron 09-08-2010 01:42 AM

Which was the one with the crows? That was one of the most god awful movies I've ever seen.

The first one is okay I guess, probably only if you're into Resident Evil, but it's really not very good.
I think I only saw part of the second one and she was falling in love with Nemesis or something?

I can't believe they've made it to 4 movies. Given some of the great franchises that haven't, it's a bit disheartening

Furious Beardsley 09-08-2010 02:13 AM

Extinction was the one with crows. I've seen far worse movies than the Resident Evil series. Oh well, different strokes for different folks.

No.

ME: "28 Days Later is probably the best zombie movie ever."

ROOMMATE: "It's not a zombie movie!"

ME: "It's about an epidemic that causes people to rabidly attack and bite each other. The disease is passed by bodily fluids. I mean, come on."

ROOMMATE: "It's about a violence inducing disease."

ME: "That makes people eat other people's flesh."

ROOMMATE: "They don't eat flesh, they just attack people and murder them."

ME: "And bite their necks open and chew on their muscles. They're fucking zombies. If you seriously don't think that 28 Days Later is a zombie movie, you're a fucking moron."

ROOMMATE: "Well, it's not."

BigDaddyCool 09-10-2010 09:50 AM

Young Frankenstein, the greatest off all zombies.

Still pretty bad considering the first one was decent.

This one is fucking awesome too

Disturbed316 09-10-2010 03:05 PM

Rec is pretty awesome, but I love the Dawn remake, got to be the best.

Nicky Fives 09-11-2010 07:48 PM

Zombieland was pretty awesome....

Sounds just like Daybreakers but with zombies instead of Vampires. Could be interesting though.

Good zombie flicks:

28 days later 1 & 2
Dawn of the Dead(remake)
Shaun of the Dead
Zombieland

Bad zombie flicks:

Any other Zombie film.

Heard about this new zmobie film being made in cuba, and it sounds like it may be alright. Here is a teaser for it:

Buzzkill 09-11-2010 08:24 PM

Best: Shaun of the Dead, new Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later
Worst: Everything else rly

I really wouldn't classify the Nazi's in Dead Snow as "zombies" unless its just based on their appearance alone.

Schlomey 09-12-2010 11:02 AM

They are un-dead nazi soldiers who return to life to regain their treasure. Not a standard reason for returning to life in zombie lore but the facts remain. They are walking un-dead. So doesn't that mean zombie?

Joe Kerr 09-12-2010 11:05 PM

not really zombie moveis but close. The crazies...they were zombie like...also i am legend had zombie like creatures only more intelligent..

What was the movie where they were on the roof and the one guy sniped Jay Leno zombie?

With that logic Army of Darkness and evil dead 1 and 2

alvarado52 09-13-2010 03:39 PM

I enjoyed (my best):
Dawn of the Dead remake
28 Weeks Later

For whatever reason, i didnt care for 28 Days...i guess because i feel no zombie movie should have any sort of happy ending. To me, a zombie movie to take serious ends with a 'nope, youre still fucked' scene.

Johnny McNasty 09-14-2010 04:36 AM

Wasn't there a alternate ending to 28 days later, which was was more bleak and hopeless?
