Has there Been a good comic story line since Civil War?

Been out of the loop for a bit. that and for some reasons they decided to stop selling comic books around here. The closest store was a half hour away and now its closed :(

LuigiD 09-09-2010 02:14 AM

Since you are mentioning Civil War I am guessing you are speaking of Marvel only? if so...all the follow ups to civil war were alright in my opinion. World War Hulk was a pretty good story. Had some good tie-ins such as the Initiative and X-Men. There was a couple of mini-series after Civil War that were def. worth it such as Namor.
The New Avengers are gold most of the time too. The next 15-20 issues after Civil War are good reads. Annihilation was cool too if you didn't read that. The Captain America stories that follow Civil War are also gold. Probably some of the best comic writing I have read in some years..
The new Thor is def. worth it as well. Starting on issue #1.
I am sure there is more. Its late and I have Algebra and Latin running through my head.

Nowhere Man 09-09-2010 02:53 AM

JMS's run on Thor was pretty amazing, as was the Death of Steve Rogers stuff. I'd also recommend the Gauntlet; even though One More Day was atrocious, the Gauntlet really restored my faith in the Spider-Man franchise.

Outside of Marvel, I highly suggest the Sinestro Corps War from Green Lantern, Batman R.I.P., and even though it started before Civil War, the Image series Invincible.

Fignuts 09-09-2010 06:01 AM

Blackest Night has probably the most impressive art in a book, that I've seen in a long time. Ivan Reis is just Incredible. The story itself is pretty damn good too. Not quite as good as sinestro corps, but the art more than makes up for it.

Reavant 09-09-2010 08:04 AM

secret invasion and siege

Fignuts 09-09-2010 04:05 PM

Secret Invasion is pretty good. Siege is fucking terrible though.

Funky Fly 09-09-2010 05:09 PM

Siege was over too quick and kinda all over the place. Plus The Sentry...

SPOILER: show
Weak finish to that. The Helicarrier drops the guy that can't be stopped just enough for Thor to kill him. I mean, no doubt Odinforce Thor could kill him, but the Helicarrier shouldn't have been able to do dick

Fignuts 09-09-2010 05:13 PM

My thoughts on it

SPOILER: show

First off, I'll start with the 4 issue format. Everything felt rushed. It should have gone at least 6 issues, imo. I mean this is the culmination of everything they've been building to since secret war ended, and actually since sentry came back in new avengers. And they rush through it in 4 issues. Thor vs Sentry was a fight that we've been waiting years to see. There should have been a whole issue dedicated just to that. But what did we get? 3 or 4 panels of them trading blows. Horrible.

And don't tell me, "Oh well the tie in books flesh everything out." Bullshit. Tie-ins should be optional reading, that enhances the story. The main book still needs to be able to stand on it's own. This doesn't.

Moving on, I didn't really like steve rogers donning the stripes here. If anything, it was the perfect oppurtunity to fully establish bucky as the new cap.

The last couple things I really didn't like involve the sentry. Firstly, I am a fan of the character. I have always enjoyed enigmatic characters, and they did a phenomenal job, at spreading out over time, all the new discoveries about his origins. What I didn't like was that he was just some junkie that randomly drank an enhanced super soldier forum. Not the part about him being a junkie, as that was interesting. It was the serum part. Like BDC said, you have to suspend your disbelief a lot when reading comics, but there is a limit. At some point, you're going to say "Well this is just stupid." And the sentry becoming powerful enough to probably singlehandedly defeat galactus by having a drink(one that wasn't even magical, at that) is tupid.

So at the end of issue 3 when sentry transformed, and Norman implied that they don't know what sentry really is, I got excited. Was waiting for some big reveal in issue 4, but it didn't come. Dissapointing.

My biggest gripe however, is with how quick the other heroes were to kill him. Whole conversation was pretty much:

Sentry: Kill me
Heroes: No
Sentry: Seriously
Heroes: lol ok

There was literally no conflict in the decision whatsoever. Not even after the fact. It's just that it would be nice to have a little consistency, considering that for 60 years, heroes refused to kill even the most dangerous and evil villains. Seems especially stupid after reading Fallen Son, where everyone was saying how much they admired and respected him, and made him out to be the greatest hero ever.

Still a fun read, it's just that I was expecting so much more from it.

Rammsteinmad 09-09-2010 05:21 PM

World War Hulk was pretty awesome.

Funky Fly 09-09-2010 05:40 PM

Yeah, definitely feel you on that.

SPOILER: show
I can see what they were thinking with killing Sentry because it's like he just sank Asgard and killed 43585 people including Ares and "it's war, so the rules change", but yeah gay. Rogers also wearing the uniform was weird, but I'm glad they stuck with a passing of the torch.

Blackest Night

M-A-G 09-17-2010 04:45 PM

The return of Captain America was good. Siege helped start the wheels turning to get things back on track after the shake-up that was the Civil War. Although thanks to that little number, we had to get One More Day and Dark Reign.

Reavant 09-17-2010 07:32 PM

Spawn: Endgame

Destro 2.0 09-17-2010 08:41 PM

Seemingly due to return in the Chaos War crossover that starts next month

Sixx 09-18-2010 08:09 PM

Man, I just read about some recent comic book storylines on wiki.

Captain America pardoned by Barack Obama and becomes the head of security of the United States?

Paaaah-lease.

Joe Kerr 09-18-2010 09:10 PM

anyone know the web sites you can read these on

FrankenCastle is no more.

Impact! 09-19-2010 03:31 AM

Excellent, what actually happened with that? Haven't had a chance to catch up on it since he got killed.

I know you can download them and read them with CDisplay.

Sixx 09-19-2010 05:18 AM

For the record, I'm now downloading the whole Civil War, cause I've only read a few books from that whole storyline.

As far as I know the writers realized how much they fucked up for all the backlash so they had to no choice. The cover of the latest Punisher shows all the Stitches and scars and all the bullshit being removed off of him.

I thought it was a stupid Idea from issue one to do that.

Impact! 09-20-2010 12:14 AM

Yeah, it really seemed like a half assed way to make him more powerful. Which he really didn't need.

What made the Punisher great is his wits. I mean the man is actually intelligent. I have one graphic novel where he uses the Hulk to fight Spider Man, Dare Devil, and Wolverine. In that same comic he shoots Wolverine with a rocket launcher because he knows that you can't kill him but you can push him to the limits.

He is my favorite hero and he doesn't need robot arms or any other bullshit. If I want to see him get powerful have him steal the War Machine Suit now that would be bad ass.

Funky Fly 09-20-2010 05:13 PM

Now that Rhodey is 100% human again, does he have a new suit? Because that cyborg synch with any tech shit was badass.

Well, then, it's on isohunt.

Just search for "Civil War comics" and it's there. All the books, chornologically in one torrent. I know it's not the same reading it on a computer, but oh, well.

Better than nothing...or shelling out a shit load of money for comics i have yet to read.

Jeritron 09-21-2010 01:01 AM

Well I'm sure it's printed in trade paperbacks. I'm not sure how many volumes it is. Anyone know?

dronepool 09-21-2010 01:25 AM

The main story is 7 issues, 1 trade long. Most of the crossovers aren't really needed but "help out".

Impact! 09-21-2010 08:55 AM

ok, whats the backstory on that?

Sixx 09-21-2010 09:37 AM

Just downloaded House of M.

Is it any good? Any other suggestions?

I'm talking Marvel Only. Punisher, X-Men, Captain America preferably.

The Punisher: Welcome Back Frank.

Next Big Thing 09-21-2010 12:32 PM

Secret Invasion with the scrolls got me back into comics, I wish they'd do a miniseries or movie based on it... the series after that got me back out of comics.

Destro 2.0 09-21-2010 01:22 PM

X-men: Onslaught

Lock Jaw 09-21-2010 02:02 PM

Check out the Marvel space stuff.

Annihilation was going on the same time as Civil War and DC's Infinite Crisis and it is miles better than both of them.

Was followed up by Annihilation: Conquest and the Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy series.

Then War of Kings/Real of Kings.

Now they have the Thanos Imperative.

Sixx 11-11-2010 07:06 AM

Yeah, so I've recently read a few Marvel storylines (Civil War, Secret Invasion, Siege).

I'm downloading Dark Reign now. It's over 4GB. Is it any good? Worth downloading?
