Montreal Canadiens, why do they call em The Habs?
 
I always hear the Montreal Canadiens referred to as The Habs, anybody know why?

habs is an abbreviation of "les Habitants" which was the name given to the settlers from new france way back in the day, then once the canadiens got there name they decided to give them a french nickname since they're in a french city.

Morcheba is right, it's short for Les Habitants.
