Why do people love those wrestling games from N64?

Like the No Mercy, Thunder games. Even to this day, it's still highly considered one of the best all around wrestling games ever.

Is it because of the grappling system gameplay?

Ok is someone editing your posts or are you high?

The Naitch 09-28-2010 05:15 PM

HIGH ON HEROIN

Eklipse 09-28-2010 05:19 PM

No Mercy is the 2nd best wrestling game ever (next to SmackDown: Here Comes the Pain)
They were easy to pick up and play...
There were no combinations of 5 buttons to do a simple move.
The career mode wasn't as linear as the games now.
AND it was the Attitude Era...so there ya go.

voncouch 09-28-2010 06:35 PM

It's hard to explain if you've never played them for yourself, but here goes nothing:

One of those "Minute to learn, lifetime to master" sort of deals. They were just so easy to play, but not simplistic. There was a wide variety of moves, but they were all easy to pull off. The matches were fun, especially the Royal Rumble and Ladder Match. The rosters were huge, you could edit the moves. The create-a-wrestler was simple, but fun. And I think the biggest draw of them all: you and 3 other people could just pick up the sticks and go at it. No Mercy is my favorite wrestling game of all time, 2nd to only Goldeneye for favorite of all time.

teamXtremist 09-28-2010 06:39 PM

yeah i can remeber some old wrestlemania ones for the super nintendo that were badass but no mercy was crunk dont know why but played the shit outta it

JimmyMess 09-28-2010 06:56 PM

dic dic diggity dic diggity dawg

Best loading music for WWF No Mercy... doesn't serve a purpose but it was in my head when I saw this thread.

As for the games, they were so easy to use, yet challenging for the time (if you played expert mode). A combination of the time, the popularity of the 4-person n64 console, wrestling as a pop-culture phenomenon all lead to these games being marked as instant classics.

Just that in itself makes it an instant classic

SlickyTrickyDamon 09-28-2010 07:39 PM

SOCKO!!!

SMACKDOWN MALL!!!

Please don't mention WCW Thunder the game in the same sentence as No Mercy. Thunder is the reason we have the shitty Hulk Hogan TNA nWo-sound a like theme.

Chavo Classic 09-28-2010 07:40 PM

The storyline mode wasn't great. To complete to whole picture you'd have to occassionally lose matches on purpose. Even then you weren't sure which matches you need to throw.

The game was tits though. The visuals were great, and the music was exceptional for a console game.

RatedGSuperstar 09-28-2010 08:14 PM

The writing in the storyline mode was sort of hokey, with every sentence ending in "!!", but it was still fun.

My favorite part was that once you got the spirit meter up, you had a good 10 seconds or so to hit the finisher more than once, rather than just hitting it once and having to build back up again. You could Stone Cold Stunner someone like 5 times before it ran out. Not realistic, but crazy fun.

Domino 09-28-2010 08:15 PM

This thread is so appropriate.

I just found my N64 about a month ago and ordered No Mercy online.

I've been on a No Mercy trip ever since.

Emperor Smeat 09-28-2010 08:27 PM

Too bad after No Mercy, THQ dropped AKI as a wrestling game developer which also meant they couldn't use the AKI engine anymore for non-Smackdown games.

Back then wrestling games were special in that the Playstation got its own engine and game style while the N64 had its own engine and style which gave both series a unqiue feeling to them.

I hated how the Gamecube versions tried to mimic the "Smackdown" style instead of continuing the Revenge/Wrestlemania style although they did fix it by the time of the Day of Reckoning games. Then THQ scrapped the DoR engine just to keep the Smackdown engine for all consoles.

Juan 09-28-2010 08:30 PM

I'll never understand how the Smackdown engine still sells after pretty much staying the same for 10 years.

JimmyMess 09-28-2010 08:35 PM

I unfortunately no longer have my n64, but I totally downloaded the rom for the computer and I constantly play No Mercy, WrestleMania, and WCW/nWo Revenge. Just epic.

Especially when you would do the battle royals or royal rumble, and the unlockable characters would show up (ie Andre) and all the boys would "WHOAA" and all that fun shit!

VSG 09-28-2010 08:39 PM

My first WWE game was WWE:Raw from 2002. No storylines, all action:

Who was doing the announcing for that game? Wasn't Lilian.

VSG 09-28-2010 09:17 PM

Not sure. The game had no in-game commentary or any storylines and so voices were not big in the game.

I like this arcade_style look

BollywoodSingh 09-28-2010 10:08 PM

I thought the gameplay for the old THQ N64 games were a lot more realistic than the new games. Like the way the moves were performed, it wasn't at fast paced as the current games. Made it more realistic IMO.

No Mercy or WCW/nWo Revenge are my favourite wrestling games ever. Revenge would be #1 if they had a story mode. I loved Revenge because there were so many different wrestling styles in that one.

I bought an N64 with No Mercy last year for $50.

Xero 09-28-2010 10:13 PM

I say that the DOR games were better than the N64 games. They were basically the evolution of the N64 games' game play.

Kalyx triaD 09-28-2010 10:54 PM

Honestly, DoR2 was fucking epic. The SvR series is only now doing big things.

No Mercy
DoR2
HCTP
SvR '10

The epic four as far as I'm concerned.

Schlomey 09-28-2010 11:10 PM

Schlomey wishes he owned a 64 again :(

I need to play me one of those.

Furious Beardsley 09-29-2010 01:54 AM

Anyone remember WCW Mayhem or WCW Nitro? Those games were awful.

WCW/NWO Revenge, No Mercy, are the greatest though.

James Steele 09-29-2010 02:07 AM

WWF RAW was horrible and everybody walked like they were sitting on a pole.

WWE Raw 2 was pretty good, but it had this horrible glitch where your opponent would just stomp you and never let you get up. Ruined a potentially great game.

Droford 09-29-2010 02:08 AM

I like WCW/NWO Revenge more than No Mercy for some reason

WCW Nitro wasn't that bad. It was pretty much a precursor to the more popular THQ/AKI games.

whiteyford 09-29-2010 02:21 AM

Bought an N64 last week, got WCW/NWO revenge and wrestlemania 2000 with it, wish the rosters were as deep nowadays. Took literaly minutes to pick up the basic controls.

RiX1024 09-29-2010 04:53 AM

I only have Wrestlemania 2000 and WCW Revenge, wish i could get No Mercy as well. I'll stick with my PS3.

Sixx 09-29-2010 04:58 AM

No Mercy was never released here, but to this day I have Wrestlemania 2000 and Revenge.

Played No Mercy using an emulator only.

And Nitro and Thunder were very similar, both were awful. So was Mayhem. Oh, and Backstage Assault.

Hanso Amore 09-29-2010 01:26 PM

There was a move where you did 5 power bombs straight and then rolled it into a Death Valley Driver.

Nuff Said.

Lock Jaw 09-29-2010 01:48 PM

The N64 games were amazing because they were so simple to pick up and play, and were actually fun. I find wrestling games these days just too damn complex. And forget about trying to create a wrestler nowadays. I don't have the patience for that, especially all this "stats" BS.

I remember even non-wrestling fans got into the wrestling games. Had a friend who hated wrestling, but for some reason he got WCW/nWo World Tour when it came out, and I remember that the first thing we did was have an epic match that was almost an hour long. I was Sting. Don't remember who my friend was.

bigslimjj 09-29-2010 01:50 PM
