Cena turning Heel?

Source: The Wrestling Observer Newsletter

The possibility of turning John Cena heel has been discussed much more seriously than in the past, according to sources.

Vince McMahon made it clear when the idea was previously broached that it would not even be considered due to the tremendous amount of revenue Cena draws via merchandise. While there doesn’t appear to be any firm plan in place, McMahon has since changed his tune on the subject as he is now open to listening to suggestions.

Meanwhile, accoring to another source, there is ‘strong talk’ of a turning Cena heel come WrestleMania season.

So...would this work out? Way I see it, they're positioning Randy Orton as the top face now, giving way for Cena to pursue a heel turn. Does this mean he may join Nexus? Does this mean that Cena may turn heel and face 'Taker at Mania?

Cena's pretty much run his course with his feuds, and he's not likely to drop down and, say, feud with Jack Swagger or Alberto del Rio (which wouldn't do much, considering it would be unlikely that the heel would go over).

With him turning heel, he can...well...feud with a lot of guys that he's feuded with when they were heels. Randy Orton, HHH, Big Show...or maybe he'll drop down and mix it up with a Kofi Kingston or a Daniel Bryan?

More I think about it, the more I feel like the WWE's lacking a strong upper card face presence. Can Cena be the guy who can elevate some of these younger guys to that level? I don't know so...

Lots to think about gents, discuss.

It will be very easy to turn Cena heel. He is hated by everyone over 16 with a penis (generally) and everybody else are very easy to manipulate (kids). Have him lose and snap on the fans in a scathing promo or have him "sell his soul" to win ala SCSA at WrestleMania X7.

Snowden 09-30-2010 01:14 AM

Yeah, I agree with you that the turn really won't be a bitch, nor the month or two afterwards. I just feel like a prolonged Cena heel turn would be bumpier in the long run than a lot of people give it credit for.

Thats why you hire "writers" who actually fucking know and understand wrestling and don't script their promos word for word.

Jeritron 09-30-2010 01:18 AM

If they're going to turn Cena heel in the forseeable future it would have made a lot of sense to keep the title off of Orton for now, so he could chase a heel Cena for it.
Not sure where Orton goes now. His popularity was/is gaining huge steam, but I feel keeping the fans hungry and having him chase a hated heel for that belt over a long period of time would have been the wisest choice.
Cena will probably stay face and Orton will probably just keep the belt for a long time

Jeritron 09-30-2010 01:20 AM

I could see them doing a face/face Cena vs Orton main event at Wrestlemania and completely duplicating the build and finish from Wrestlemania 17.
I don't even think it would be bad at all, even if it's a complete rehash.

VSG 09-30-2010 01:25 AM

Wrestlemania is pretty far off, so if they are planning for a heel turn around that time then Orton keeping the belt and Cena dismantling Nexus are very much a possibility.

Jeritron 09-30-2010 01:31 AM

Nexus will be over sooner than later I think. Hopefully Barrett wins somehow at Hell in a Cell and it lasts til Survivor Series.
This will allow them to use Cena to sell some Nexus shirts without turning heel. I still wouldn't put the expiration date of Nexus any later than SS though.

D Mac 09-30-2010 01:36 AM

Hope this happens.

Lock Jaw 09-30-2010 01:50 AM

They'll probably just go the predictable route and have him turn heel because he "liked" his time in Nexus.

Papa Schlongo 09-30-2010 02:30 AM

My Scenario for Cena Turning Heel.

He loses to Barrett and joins the Nexus. He tries everything to get out over time from trying to set up stable mates against each other to just being plainly uncooperative. After a while, he does the thing he said he would never do. Gives up. He becomes the Nexus's main event killer. They go around taking out people they pose as a immediate main event threat(reliving old times while barrett coaxes Cena to enjoy it), and Barrett becomes the New World Heavyweight Champion from a MAJOR ASSIST from Cena. The question would then be....did he do that because he wanted to...or because they made him do it.

Week or two go by to let the unthinkable marinate. Cena then returns when Barrett demands he comes to the ring to talk about the glory Cena felt when he assisted his leader Barrett to become world champion. Cena comes out to new music...heel music. But the crowd erupts anyway because Cena comes out with a hoodie with Cenation on it. They think he is back...however...he absolutely lays waste to Barrett, and just takes the belt. Nexus is shocked to see Cena take off the hoodie...to sport a new Cenation shirt...but the N in nation IS A NEXUS N!!!!! He says that wanted to dismantle the nexus...but after weeks of thinking about it....he thinks a management change is what all that was needed. He cites his accomplishments and gives the nexus an ultimatum...continue to kick barrett's ASS or get out of his sight!!!!

They kick Barrett's ass and high fives Cena. Cena declares himself the new world champion...and actually holds the title ransom. Just to seal the deal....Cena is backstage and someone like Kofi Kingston or Chavo Guerrero walks up and says that they are proud to watch Cena take all that crap from Nexus, for him to rise up and take over the group....they try to shake Cena hand...which ends up in a major beat down by Cena himself!!!! He immediately walks back out to the ring dragging the guys he just beat the crap out of and cuts the single most disrespecting promo on the crowd and the other wrestlers in the back, that takes you back to the Dudleys in Heatwave 95.. ALSO HE WILL NEVER FIGHT FAIR....

HE ENDS UNDERTAKER;S STREAK AT WM BY CHEATING... some ole school shit like throwing salt in the eyes..I MEAN COME ON!!!! THAT OUGHT'LL DO IT.

Sepholio 09-30-2010 02:35 AM

That definitely ought'll do it.

Papa Schlongo 09-30-2010 02:35 AM

He will change Nexus to support his ego....it will be called....CENEXUS!!!!! THAT's FUCKIN GOLD MAN THE SCHLONG HAS SPOKEN!!!!!!

They will only recruit members very rarely..very rarely....to keep the karma wheel slow. NWO Meets Four Horsemen.

Londoner 09-30-2010 02:36 AM

Vince should keep denying it as it would make the heel turn more surprising, but atleast there's some hope now.

Droford 09-30-2010 02:38 AM

Have him be Austin at WM X7 vs Taker and just have him repeatedly smash Taker with a chair to get the win..

Naw...because it would make Cena look weak in the long run. A high spot and bump match, with cena doing some sneaky shit to get the win....sending the undertaker off on an unforgettable note.

I would never forget that.

chrisat928 09-30-2010 03:58 AM

And more people will cheer a Cena heel turn than boo him now.

Troelar 09-30-2010 06:15 AM

I could most certainly see Cena joining Nexus simply for the WWE to sell more t-shirts!

Only problem I see with Cena going full heel, and Orton being the top face is that Orton doesn't wear two sweatbands on either arm. He needs more gear that can be sold!

Also couldn't we just have Cena try to beat Taker by cheating at WM, without it actually working? I thought Taker only wanted to lose his streak to someone who really needed to get over - I doubt Cena really needs to get over.

RiX1024 09-30-2010 07:10 AM

Love it if he joins Nexus and turns heel by saying he played the crowd and was behind the whole thing. and yes we will cheer a heel Cena.

Give him Jericho's super-serious, suit-wearing gimmick now that he's out (and swap the jean shorts for wrestling tights), and play up his company man image. Have him say he's always done what's best for the business, and Randy Orton is bad for business (going around kicking people in the skull, being totally unpredictable, being a bad role model). You could even take a risk by mentioning the piss poor TV ratings, and that it's obvious that him playing to the fans is doing nothing for the company, so he's ditching the fans and he doesn't care about making them happy anymore.

Considering the style of that poster, and also considering that I saw what I believe to have been an erroneous promo meant to instead hype WWE Hell In A Cell, which instead was a promo for WWE Bragging Rights, which aired last Thursday during Superstars, I'd say it's likely they'll have Cena lose and join 'NeXus' and stay face by vowing to take them all down from the inside or something.

Snowden 09-30-2010 12:11 PM

Speaking of Nexus advertising post HIAC, they ran an add in the Philly area for shows in November, with their main selling point being the Nexus coming into town. Take that for what you will.

Volare 09-30-2010 12:11 PM

That actually looks bad ass.

Xero 09-30-2010 12:30 PM

Cena looks good in black. He should stop wearing Skittles clothes and go Vintage.

The Pope 09-30-2010 12:34 PM

Seven guys who wrestle like rookies. :shifty:

I never got why they didnt try a heel turn like Brets anti US run, play up the chorus of boo's he gets everytime he's on screen and how he's fed up with destroying his body for people who dont appreciate his sacrifices yadda yadda, so he's only gonna go out there for the Cenation. Turns heel on everyone who boos him and still plays face for the tweens.

The part about Orton is great. Orton's taken people out for months at a time, Cena's missed months at a time. Cena doesn't want to get injured again, and a crusade against Orton sounds good.

glanville6 09-30-2010 01:24 PM

As well as the Orton being a bad role model for kids...good stuff. Orton has tattoos, has cheated to win, punts people in the head.

Totally against the things Cena has done and then he is upset Orton was becoming more popular even though Cena has been a better role model for kids makes this better.

BollywoodSingh 09-30-2010 02:30 PM

I think it would be pretty interesting if Cena turns heel, but business wise, it just doesn't make sense. If I was running WWE, I definitely wouldn't turn him as the live crowds booing him have had no effect on business or his drawing ability. Turning him heel might be too much of a risk to business.

Yep. That'd be my fear. If he goes "badass" the fans will get behind him again. He needs to becomea corporate kiss ass or something. I'd have said go the suit/wrestling attire way but we've already seen it with Jericho.

nelioneil 09-30-2010 05:35 PM

Would you prefer a slow heel turn buiild up (ala Punk) , acting as a tweener or sudden heel turns like in the Attitude era (like Owen Hart joining the nation)
