Awesome. I recently rebought Blood Money and enjoyed it more than ever. I'm hoping for more of the same and a trailer soon.

Rocksteady, the developers behind Batman: Arkham Asylum, were recently linked to Hitman 5, an unannounced next-gen installment in the series.

The online resume for actor Mark Sloan revealed he was performing motion capture work for Hitman 5 through Rocksteady, which has led to speculation the developer is taking over the franchise.

Eidos president Ian Livingstone confirmed to PWGM during the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, however, that Hitman will remain with IO Interactive, the series' long-time developer.

"This is the first I've heard about it," said Livingstone. "Hitman always has been and always will be IO Interactive's baby, which it still continues to be so."

"Rocksteady are not involved with the development of Hitman 5," he reiterated.

The game has yet to be officially announced, so it's still a possibility Livingstone is toying with us. Still, it looks like IO Interactive will helm the next Hitman title.

[UPDATE] Industry veteran George Broussard claims Io Interactive has suffered staff reductions; Square Enix confirms.

Earlier this week, 3D Realms cofounder and Duke Nukem champion George Broussard tipped off the industry to "seasonal roll-offs" at a handful of gaming publisher Electronic Arts' Canadian studios. Today, Broussard returned to his Twitter account with more industry-insider scuttlebutt, stating Square Enix has enacted layoffs and canceled a project at Danish studio Io Interactive.

A hit may have gone out on Io developers..

"Layoffs at Io Interactive (Kane&Lynch/Hitman). As many as 35, and a project cancelled. - Tis' the season," Broussard said via his Twitter feed. The industry veteran offered no other details on the situation.

[UPDATE] Square Enix has since confirmed for GameSpot that Io has indeed been impacted by staff reductions, though a representative declined to offer specifics surrounding the situation.

"I can confirm that we have made some internal changes at IO Interactive which has regrettably resulted in the loss of some jobs," a Square Enix representative told GameSpot. "This is a natural part of any studio's existence when you ramp-up and ramp-down on projects to ensure you have the right level of resource and expertise within the studio. We genuinely wish those who have been affected by this, the best of luck for the future."

Io is among the many studios that were once the backbone of Eidos, before that publisher was purchased in April 2009 by Japanese gaming giant Square Enix. The studio is perhaps best known for its killer-for-hire franchise Hitman, with other game properties including Kane & Lynch and Mini Ninjas.

As for the canceled project, the only known, unreleased project in Io's stable is Hitman 5, which was first teased in February 2008. However, whether or not Io is developing this project remains a mystery. In August 2009, British actor Mark Sloan indicated that he had completed voice work for the game, in the process indicating that Batman: Arkham Asylum developer Rocksteady Studios had taken over the project.

Danish developer IO Interactive is hard at work on the next game in the popular Hitman series, Eurogamer has learned.

The PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 title will be released "at the very earliest Christmas next year", one source told us.

The claim was backed up by retail sources, who have indicated to Eurogamer that a release later in 2011 "will be most likely".

Rumour of a fifth game in the stealth-em-up series has been rife since the release of the last Hitman game, 2006's Blood Money.

In June last year Variety reported that a new Hitman film was in the works and contained story elements from Hitman 5, due to be released in late 2010. We know that the reported release date is incorrect.

In June 2009 an IO community manager said: "I can tell you that there is no way we will be basing a storyline for a new Hitman game on the story in a licensed movie. That's just not how we work so you shouldn't be concerned about that."

Earlier this week Hitman 5 posters popped up on the internet, setting fans' tongues wagging.

IO Interactive said the artwork "does not represent any new Hitman game", but we’ve been told they "likely" relate to the game.

The posters have since been removed.

Backing up our source's information is online retailer Play.com, which says Hitman 5 will be released on 28th November 2011.

Play had not responded to Eurogamer at the time of publishing.

In the four years since the release of Hitman 4, IO has put out third-person action game Kane & Lynch and cutesy third-person action game Mini Ninjas. Sequel Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is due out on 20th August in the UK.

Now the studio is working full throttle on bringing everyone's favourite bald-headed assassin back.

News of a new Hitman game should come as no surprise. The series has sold over seven million copies to date.

Indeed, in 2007 Eidos' then parent company Sci Entertainment said in its annual report: "We have invested significantly in the pipeline of products for 2008 and beyond and we are looking forward with much anticipation to the sequels to Just Cause and Battlestations: Midway, which are already in development, and new versions of world-leading franchises Tomb Raider and Hitman."

And then in 2008 SCi again mentioned the game, saying IO is "already working on a brand-new franchise along with the fifth Hitman game and a sequel to Kane & Lynch".

Square Enix told Eurogamer: "It's flattering to see so many fans are eager for another Hitman game. Unfortunately we have nothing to announce at this time."

An alternate-reality game run for Hitman enthusiasts by the developing studio's community manager has evidently come to a close, with a series of barcode-clues seeming to point to the first day of E3 2011. That would likely mean a reveal of a long-awaited Hitman 5 then.

The windup of this particular game of cat and mouse, involving mailings back and forth among members of the Hitman Forum and IO Interactive's community manager, also includes what's said to be the first image from the game [above]. It's impossible to tell if it is or if it isn't, as it's a cap of pre-rendered CGI, but it does show the familiar silencer and glove 47 is known to use. So there you go.

Not that this is at all shocking; we're talking about an extremely popular series and a studio under a publisher that lurrrrrrves them some sequels. Rumblings over the past two or so years have also pointed to the inevitability of a Hitman 5. I guess we can be more certain that we'll be hearing something definitive in June.

The game is called Hitman: Absolution according to a trademark filed by Square Enix. Would be good if we could change the name of the thread to that as it wont let me do it.

Looks like we'll get info at E3.

IO Interactive makes the game official today, after a trademark filing outed the name of Hitman: Absolution late last month. According to the announcement, Absolution sees Agent 47 take on his most dangerous contract to date. He'll travel a corrupt and twisted world in order to get to the bottom of a dark conspiracy. Sounds like par for the course, really.

"For the first time we are taking Agent 47 on a personal journey which allows us to explore other parts of the Hitman fantasy," said Tore Blystad, game director, IO Interactive. "This is both a familiar and yet significantly different experience from other Hitman games; something our silent assassins will relish, as will all those new to the Hitman world."

Built using IO Interactive's Glacier 2 proprietary game engine, players can expect a cinematic story, distinctive art direction, and an original game design that combines Hitman's classic game mechanics with entirely new ones.

Hitman: Absolution will make its grand debut at E3 2011 next month for the Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3. Until then, keep your eyes peeled on the game's official website for fresh intel.

Intentional or accidental?

Edit: Probably intentional because someone looked up that product on Amazon and the single review says:

"We've designed a more stylized, more serious, and darker game this time around in both the story line and the visuals," game director Tore Blystad tells The Hollywood Reporter. "The hope is that the movie will be going in a similar direction, and then when they both come out they will speak the same language. They won't follow the old Hitman games, but rather go with this newer direction."

That movie is the second Hitman film, in production oblivious to the fact the first one sucked. On the bright side is the fact this new flick has all new characters and an all-new story, making a clean break from the first movie. It will, however, share the same "look and feel" of the new game, tying the two together.

Back to the game, it's going to star Keith Carradine (not the dead one and not the Revenge of the Nerds one, either) as Agent 47 and White Collar's Marsha Thomason as long-time "voice in the ear" Diana, while mo-cap work was done at Giant Studios, the same place James Cameron used for Avatar. Both actors provide both the voice and mo-cap work for their characters.

Looks too action based. The mixture of the music used and the fact 47 is just walking straight up to peoples faces and killing them seems a bit un-Hitman.

Disturbed316 06-07-2011 08:43 AM

Hmm seems they have gone the Splinter Cell route by making it more action based :-\

Emperor Smeat 06-07-2011 03:15 PM

Technically the games always allowed the ability to play any way you wanted even though the trailers usually promoted stealth but this one does make it seem like the game is going to be more action based than usual.

A lot of the kills did look amazing though.

Emperor Smeat 06-07-2011 10:17 PM

Based on the trailer and from some previews, the game and Agent 47 have some new or expanded features such as:

* Strangle people using his bare hands as an option and not just with wire but the person makes more sounds this way which can alert nearby enemies.
* Shadows play a huge role similar to the Splinter Cell series.
* New kill moves include ripping telephone wires out of the wall to go along with some new kill animations.
* Disguises now come with the ability to mimic the actions and movement of people he's trying to be as a way to make it easier to con someone and prevent the CPU from always being suspicious.
* Cover system can be used for both combat and non-combat situations with the non-combat allowing him to switch from spot to spot much faster.

Emperor Smeat 06-14-2011 08:22 PM

New Instinct mode revealed and its meant to make you "feel" as if your Agent 47 since it goes into a first person mode and shows off certain routes and things possible as hints. It is also meant to make it appear your seeing what Agent 47 is thinking at the moment for certain situations. The mode is automatically disabled when playing on higher difficulty modes though.

Quote:

A key element of Hitman Absolution gameplay is the ability to tap into Agent 47's "Instinct." With a button push players are able to see the world through the eyes of Agent 47, the developers tell us. In this mode the world is darkened, contrasted by flaming lines that highlight escape routes, weapons, shortcuts and even the path that Agent 47 thinks an enemy is going to walk. These lines of flame spill out across a room, charting the course someone is walking. The lines look almost like occasionally leaping up at points like an audio waveform in a sound visualizer. In this mode the audio too is muted accept for the subtle hiss of a record that's come to the end of its songs.

Also revealed if you get caught or a guard gets alerted while your in a disguise, you get more time to either escape or clean up the mess before other CPU characters instantly know your disguise is fake.

Quote:

"In the old games it was very black and white," Blystad tells me. "When they saw through your disguise it was instantly blown.

"Now it is much more like ripples in water. If you alert someone it will gradually spread out to a level, but if you can retain it, you can keep the disguise."

You can also avoid detection with careful use of instinct mode.

Turns out those nuns shown during the E3 trailer last month wasn't just some short CGI video to get people to talk about the game or provide a shock moment but instead it looks like they might actually play a big role in the game's storyline.

The group is called the Saints and its teased at least one (or more) might be hunting Agent 47 in the game.

Story is being reworked or tweaked after all the negative reaction since E3 regarding the assassin's disguised as nuns in leather costumes.

Before they were only going to be a small footnote to show that everyone is getting hired to go after Agent 47 but now they will play a real critical role in the story.

IO Interactive reveals the game will have some sort of cross-platform capabilities so that stuff can be shared between t5he Xbox 360, PS3, and PC versions of the game.

Quote:

n Absolution, players will be presented with the Contracts mode, an option where gamers can create customized missions that can then be offered up to other in the community. To get the most out of Absolution‘s Contracts mode, IO Interactive devised a clever way to share created contracts across the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Speaking to Joystiq, Hitman: Absolution game designer Torben Ellert said that players will be able to decode the file numbers for contracts, and then presumedly be able to enter that same code on another system—so long as a few numbers are tweaked in the process. Ellert noted that Contract IDs begin with a two-digit number: 03 for PC, 05 for Xbox 360, and 07 for PS3. So, change that initial set of numbers to those for your platform, enter the Contract ID like a password, and—if I’m understanding all of this correctly—you should be good to go.

Drakul 08-22-2012 12:33 AM

If we can create our own missions I might actually touch the game at some point, when I find it cheap and second hand. Everything else about it put me off but creating missions sounds interesting.

Emperor Smeat 08-31-2012 05:14 PM

New developer diary explains "Contracts" multiplayer mode in a bit more detail.

Quote:

This new game mode allows players to mark up to three opponents as targets, other players are then tasked with taking down the marked targets as quickly as possible. Completion of each contract will grant points which players can spend on new weapons and disguises.
