Legendary referee passes away!!!

Legendary referee Joe Higuchi passed away recently after a long battle with lung cancer; he was 81 years old.

Higuchi practiced judo since he was a kid. After World War II, he became a judo instructor. It was during this time he learned English, which was beneficial for foreign talent years later.

Higuchi started out in pro wrestling as a wrestler in 1954. After six years, he retired as a wrestler in 1960 after joining the JWA. After a five-year hiatus, Higuchi returned to pro wrestling as a referee in 1965.

Higuchi would be one of the original members of All Japan Pro Wrestling, when Giant Baba formed the promotion in 1972. He was their senior referee. He was also the first Japanese referee for the National Wrestling Alliance. He would referee an NWA World title match in St. Louis between Jack Brisco and Dory Funk, Jr. He would retire from refereeing in 1997, becoming a caretaker to foreign talent. He would retire from All Japan in 1999, after the death of Giant Baba.

At the time of his death, Higuchi was the chairman of the Global Honored Crown championship committee for Pro Wrestling NOAH, a position he held since 2001.

Higuchi was the main man who help foreign talent get around in Japan. Outside pro wrestling, he was a chef.

He was also known for his "ref bumps," which would be used by many pro wrestling referees around the world. Although he was criticized for being slow, he was consistent. The speed of his counting, especially for pinfalls, rarely changed.

How to Impress Someone With Your Intelligence

You want people to think you are smart! The easiest way to do this is to specialize.

edit Tips

  • Be sure to learn all the vocabulary and buzzwords associated with your topic. If you like cars, know what a V-8 engine is, for example.
  • A good way to find others interested in your topic is to join a club. If birdwatching is your thing, start going on those Saturday morning hikes you have read about in the paper.
  • You don't have to know a lot about everything to show that you are in fact quite intelligent. You just have to know a lot about any one small area. Not too many people can tell the difference between a Gypsy Moth and a tent caterpillar, but if you can, people are going to notice!
  • When you try to impress someone with your intelligence, be sure to find a person who will respond well to your area of expertise.

edit Warnings

  • Sometimes people are put-off or feel belittled when talking to someone who is trying to impress them with smarts. Be modest with how much you throw at the person all at once.
  • Try not to make your knowledge too obscure or uninteresting to others. Don't specialize in something like the manufacture of ballpoint pens.
  • If you try to impress someone, who doesn't play computer games, with your Marvel vs. Capcom 2 knowledge, you'll come off looking like a geek. Pick your targets with care.
  • DO NOT look like a know-it-all because nobody likes them.
  • If your target knows nothing about this subject, it really isn't worth it.
  • Never try to impress anybody with a topic on which you know very little. You might end up with embarrassment if the person you are talking to knows more than you do and correct you when you went wrong with any of the information.

Steele, I have no problem with you or anybody for that matter. Not only I boast Japan's wrestling, I also boast Canada's, Europe's, Mexico's, Australia's, and Puerto Rico's wrestling with pride. I wanted to add some international flavors. Not ALL my posts are Japanese-related. I have done Canadian and Australian-related posts.

As soon as I saw this on the front page I knew DLVH84 would make a thread of it.

Rammsteinmad 11-08-2010 04:56 PM

And for the record, I doubt anyone here knows, or cares, who this guy is.

Through the years of being here, people like you always come and go. Not saying anything bad about you, just this board is never going to be to thrilled about your post. Would be better of you to move to a board that discusses these types of issues/events/etc etc.

VSG 11-08-2010 06:58 PM

Again, who??

Rammsteinmad 11-08-2010 07:03 PM

The referee from John Cena's last movie. So tragic.

VSG 11-08-2010 07:13 PM

Ok that was more relevant than all of that Japanese crap above. The guy was 81, I think he got to see all he wanted.

Blitz 11-08-2010 07:22 PM

Your area of expertise is different than mine and unfamiliar, therefore you are an asshole for posting this.

I know and care. Actually a pretty big loss, not tragic, but a big loss nonetheless.

Anyway, people need to relax. If the dude has a real/legit interest in puroresu, and wants to post about it, more power to him.

Thank you, Kevin.

Ophelia Alcantara Dimalanta died last Thursday. :shifty:
Just figured I'd mention that, since most of us knew of her about as well as we knew of this legendary referee.

Sixx 11-08-2010 08:32 PM

I don't think you've ever posted a thread about someone I've heard of and all of these tread titles contain the word "legendary".

I MUST HAVE BEEN LIVIN' UNDER A ROCK!
