Chris Jericho: Stu Hart Dungeon student exagerated?
 

I read his book, and when he took classes with Lance Storm at the Hart School, Bret didn't even know who was running the school. Seems like the school was just using the Hart name for exposure. I think it was being run by one of the lesser known Harts, but as far as I'm concerned, Bret and Stu had zero involvement in training Jericho.

In the book, Jericho says he went to Stu Hart's dungeon once. One time. Even then, Stu put him in ONE hold, and left.

But from what I've been hearing is that Jericho was always billed as this great student from Stu Hart's dungeon, taught by the great Stu Hart, when in reality, he only had a small encounter there

I think it's exagerated, since he only went there once.

The Harts made money off the school, and they were trained in the "way of Stu Hart", but the Dungeon is more about instant credibility than anything with most wrestlers after 1985.

Just like CM Punk said "Daniel Bryan wasn't really taught by Shawn Michaels. He went to his school, Shawn Michaels just took his money"

From what I understand, Shawn Michaels couldn't get in the ring (ol' broken back y'know) but he was active in the instruction. CM Punk should keep his fucking mouth shut before HBK rips his lip ring out and anoints him with some Sweet Chin Music.

Its similar to martial arts schools where you learn the style or get taught by someone who learned from the main person. It still counts as being taught as if it was the master or boss of the place. Example, being a student of Bruce Lee even though he's been dead for decades.

I thought Jericho left since he dreamed of the dungeon being something special and instead was disappointed in the fact it was just a plain basement.

Before he even met Owen, he drew a picture of himself and Owen as the tag team champions. Straight up bromancing him, fantasy_style

That was how Stu Hart passed his wrestling powers. It's all witchcraft rather than actual training. It's instant but takes a lot out of Stu so he rarely does it.

I'd imagine there is some sort of visual smoke and lightning effects aswell.

I think I saw something a looooong time ago following a few people who "dreamed" of being pro wrestlers. A couple of the guys they followed around with cameras went to "The Dungeon" and they made fun of how it looked, and how frail Stu was... until the one kid got legit stretched to all hell by Stu, and the other one pussed out after seeing that. There was some sort of explanation given that the students who went through there "got stretched" everyday until it hurt less and less, but those guys weren't sticking around for the benefits. I believe the same show was following another guy who unanimously had "look and charisma" and was supposed to be getting a tryout with WWF, but ended up getting in a bar fight and got sent away on assault charges due to his legit boxing background. But that's neither here nor there.

Memory sometimes plays tricks, and I'm not entirely sure what show I'm thinking of... or if all of that was even from the same program, though. Take it for whatever you may think it is worth. I believe it's more of a badge of honor and instant cred type thing. Kinda like the big deal that is made about the 5 people that ended up graduating "ECW's Hardcore Dojo", or being considered "a graduate of the WCW Power Plant", even though just about everyone who didn't come in with a name for themselves came up from their farm.

According to the Jericho DVD, it was Heyman who touted him as "The last survivor of the Hart Family Dungeon", when he came in to ECW. Jericho really had nothing to do with it.

So yeah, it was exaggerated, but it wasn't his fault.

Stu Hart was a BAMF through and through.

He would throw his kids down a flight of steps if they fucked up. I guess thats where Benoit got tips on parenting :shifty:

It's like how the Gracies have their certified jiu jitsu centers across the country even though the instructor is likely only someone who was taught by a Gracie or taught by someone who was taught by a Gracie. You're still in the lineage and considered a Gracie Jiu Jitsu practitioner even if the Gracies couldn't even pick you out of a police line up.

McDaniels did work for Belichick though, which is more the equivalent of being directly trained by Stu Hart, if Stu were frumpier and liked cut off sweat shirts.

Outside of Stu, Shawn, Harley Race, the Samoans and Killer Kowalski, who are some of the more "legendary" trainers. I bet if Bret simply licensed his name to a school, money would roll in.
