Iconic Themes

After talking about how Cena needs a new theme, it got me thinking about iconic themes. The themes that define a wrestler.

Two parts to this thread. First, do you feel that Cena's "My Time is Now" is iconic? Is it so synonymous with Cena that it shouldn't be changed?

Second, what themes do you feel are iconic? The theme that defines a wrestler and shouldn't have/should never be changed.

Shawn Michaels' is the first that comes to mind instantly. Even though it didn't fit his later run's gimmick, any other theme (DX notwithstanding) just wouldn't work.

Hogan's Real American was definitely one, at least for face Hogan. Hendrix was great for his heel run, but it didn't really work for his face run in WWE.

Flair, Warrior, The Rock's 'king' riff.

The Jayman 11-18-2010 03:49 PM

Stone Cold Steve Austin

Seth82 11-18-2010 03:51 PM

Demolition's theme was pretty iconic as well

Rammsteinmad 11-18-2010 03:58 PM

No doubt DLVH84 will post the names of some Japanese/Mexican wrestlers that nobodies heard of and explain how their theme music from 18th March 1974 is iconic.

HBK. Taker's gong. McMahon's no chance in hell.

RatedGSuperstar 11-18-2010 04:57 PM

A lot of the ones I would respond with (Rock, Austin, Triple H) have already been mentioned, but I'd also add Bret Hart and The Undertaker (edit: looks like NBT beat me on Taker). Maybe Booker T, since he even took a variation of his theme to TNA?

Also, I can't listen to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" without thinking "SELF HIGH FIVE," but I'm also a DDP mark.

Volare 11-18-2010 04:59 PM

Bret Hart (1st and 2nd)
SCSA
Rock
Undertaker
RVD(cmon you show me a vid where when his music hit no one got up)

Emperor Smeat 11-18-2010 06:13 PM

Vince's "No Chane in Hell" especially during his long feud with Stone Cold.

J Dogg Funk 11-18-2010 06:32 PM

For me an iconic themes worth is when a wrestler has been out for months, even longer sometimes and all you hear is the first few notes of the theme and the place just explodes (especialy when its a surprise). SOme that come to mind are HHH, HBK, The Rock, Stone Cold, Hulk Hogan, Roddy Pipper, Bret Hart, Undertaker, and interestly enough 3 that took place at the Royal Rumble over teh years - John Cena, RVD and Edge.

For sure Angle and Goldust

I'm wearing an RTC shirt right now, no lie.

I'd say JBL too.

Jeritron 11-19-2010 12:05 AM

John Cena's theme is pretty synonymous with him and an era. It's what I'd call iconic. By now I don't really think you can change it.

CSL 11-19-2010 12:12 AM

Cena's theme could (but not necessarily) change should he ever turn heel. Other than that it should stay put.

Jeritron 11-19-2010 12:16 AM

If he changed heel I think it would be cool for him to adopt a harder variation of the same theme.
But he should go back to it as a face.

Speaking of John Cena, anybody heard this song before? Was it on his old album? Its all over YouTube...

I don't care what you say, these are legit iconic themes. They are insanely epic sounding too.

Just saying ;)

Mr. Nerfect 11-19-2010 01:00 AM

Yeah, defining an iconic theme to me is a theme that just cannot be changed. A wrestler should use that theme (or at least a variation of it) for the rest of their career.

* Hulk Hogan
* Shawn Michaels
* Stone Cold Steve Austin's glass shattering at the beginning of whatever his theme is
* The Rock can use different variations, but too much of a change would just be weird
* Chris Jericho is pretty much set with "Break Down the Walls"
* Ric Flair
* Triple H, to an extent
* Kurt Angle, to an extent
* Eddie Guerrero's "Viva La Raza"
* Goldust (he should never use another theme while playing the character)

No, I don't consider John Cena's theme iconic. I think changing it would freshen him up. Here are some guys who I think have themes that have the potential to become permanently associated with them:

* Sheamus
* Drew McIntyre
* Daniel Bryan
* Kaval

Perfect Strangers for Shane Douglas.

So iconic both WCW and TNA made up ripped off riffs for his theme. Don't give me that "same guy" crap either. RVD doesn't have a shitty "Walk-lite" or "Second of a Kind" currently.

Speaking of TNA, Jeff's changover. It is truly fitting for his character of believing in his own shit. Now, Jeff is not as epic as Jericho with Fozzy's "Don't You Wish You Were Me?", and it's fairly new usage, but if Jeff is heel for quite awhile to come, I can see it being synonymous with him and overshadowing the Hardyz theme that has followed him since before the Brood days (really, was No More Words anything more than an update to that song, much like Batista's "I Walk Alone" being an update to his initial theme?).

CSL 11-20-2010 01:41 AM

'Same guy crap'?

Tom Guycott 11-20-2010 01:50 AM

Yeah, the "the same guy did the themes in WCW and TNA, so of course it sounds the same" is the crap I meant.
