Is this the end of the PG Era?

What do you guy's think, could this finally be the end of the PG Era?. With Cena out of WWE (storyline). And Randy Orton loosing his title to The Miz. Where does this take the PG shit. Cause I really don't see the younger generation getting behind The Miz. So What are your thoughts?.

Xero 11-23-2010 12:09 PM

End of PG? No. And it doesn't have to end. Last night was a PG show (barring Cena saying "bitch", which was bleeped).

There was a major purging of the writing staff over the weekend. If things are going to change, that's what's going to cause the change. And after last night, things are already better.

It's always been the writing. I've said it a million times and I'm sure I'll say it a million times more. WWE doesn't need to go TV-14 to be good. They don't need major amounts of blood, language and the overuse of sex. They need good writing for a wrestling show. And a good wrestling show can be TV-PG.

Xero 11-23-2010 12:11 PM

Also, the younger generation doesn't have to "get behind" Miz. He's a heel, and he's majorly over as a heel.

Triple Naitch 11-23-2010 12:17 PM

WWE will never return to the 1997-2000 type of programming, but I could see them using a lot less goofy storylines and be slightly more edgier.

Corporate CockSnogger 11-23-2010 12:21 PM

With the Tetley Tea Folk back for Tetleys? I'd have to say yes, PG Tips will soon die out.

george 11-23-2010 12:25 PM

Wait and see if Linda decides to run in 2012. I'd imagine if she doesn't run in 2012 then she won't run again, and I think that's the primary reason the WWE doesn't wanna move back to TV-14.

There is apparently a stark difference between what qualifies as TV-14 and what qualifies as PG and working in a TV-14 environment is, inherently, much easier than writing within the confines of PG television.

Xero 11-23-2010 12:29 PM

Linda isn't the biggest thing, though. It's the new advertising they get, and their deal with Mattel. PG is too lucrative to just drop. They won't even consider changing until the Mattel deal is up.

Also, they've been a lot more tame than they really could be in a PG product over the past year. RAW was a prime example of TV-PG working well. There was definitely a different (and good) feel to the show, which, again, comes down to the writing.

Mattel deal is/was 5 years so its another 4 pg years at least.

Nightwing 11-23-2010 12:56 PM

The attitude era is over. People need to learn to deal with this already.

You can't say that though, It's not always about Blood, and last nights Raw with the Cena Suck chants, even though Cena said Over 18s I bet their were still kids chanting it. And look at the old school Raw. Mae shouting Slut. Which did not get bleeped out.. So yeah I'd say it's slightly ending.

BizarroKing 11-23-2010 01:32 PM

It doesn't have to go TV-14 to have slightly edgy storylines, they can push the envelope a tiny bit I think.

BollywoodSingh 11-23-2010 01:33 PM

I'm pretty sure May Young saying "sluts" and "bitches" last week was not scripted.

Going back to TV14 (or whatever the rating is) is not going to guarantee a better TV show. They can produce good TV with PG 13. I don't have kids, but if I did, I wouldn't have wanted them to watch all the trailer park trashiness of the WWE product from 1997-2007 or so.

Xero 11-23-2010 01:35 PM

Mae Young did that on her own volition, I have no doubt about that.

And yes, the Attitude Era is over. I'm not saying an edgier product isn't possible, because I could absolutely see it, but the Attitude Era style is not coming back to WWE.

Maybe another promotion can start up with an Attitude Era-like feel, but even then, it couldn't be the Attitude Era. Hell, TNA has done just that, and look where they are. They haven't moved an inch ratings-wise in 5 years.

The "Attitude Era" style doesn't draw on its own. It's the quality of the writing and the booking that draws.

Xero 11-23-2010 01:37 PM

I take that back, the Attitude Era style COULD come back to WWE, but Vince would have to be in charge while the company starts failing catastrophically to the point that he's just throwing shit at the wall to stay afloat.

:yes::yes:

Brigstocke 11-23-2010 03:05 PM

I don't care, MIZ is Champ and Mason Ryan is coming.

Things couldn't be better.

James Steele 11-23-2010 03:08 PM

Yes, PG is over. As a matter of fact, on NXT tonight they will all show their tits and go spread eagle while Josh Matthews has the first Pie Eating Contest on WWE television since like 2005.

^ This.

You dont need dudes going around telling people to fellate them, a pimp and a porn star wrestling, japanese people running around trying to choppy choppy your pee pee to be edgy.

Nightwing 11-23-2010 03:40 PM

Though those lil japanese buggers were delightful.

Xero 11-23-2010 04:20 PM

I look at it this way. When Cena said "bitch" last night, and yeah, it was bleeped, it had impact. Swearing in WWE now has impact. It makes things feel more real. It's not just another thing that happens every other segment.

The same thing will happen with the first blade job, which I have no doubt will eventually happen (probably on PPV). It will have 100 times more impact now than it would have ten years ago because it doesn't happen all the time. It's no longer the crutch they once relied on to "add something" to a match.

In a way, this whole PG movement (the past two years) has been a reset button for things that were once wrestling staples and wound up being unimportant in the whole scheme of things.

St. Jimmy 11-23-2010 06:19 PM

No.

FourFifty 11-23-2010 06:21 PM

I could see all the slunts get behind the anti-pg movement.

Xero 11-23-2010 06:26 PM

It's also a step back from having to have a run-in, or "needing" multiple chair shots and double finishers to end matches. They can save that for epic PPV matches.

SlickyTrickyDamon 11-23-2010 06:56 PM

I will say this again, Ghostbusters was PG. Also Smackdown was always PG and WWF Attitude era was PG until like 1999.

The Naitch 11-23-2010 07:23 PM

yeah it kinda feels weird that wrestling is no longer "catering to us" anymore. Yet we're still hanging on, and it's not a bad thing, we just have to get with the times. Different times

george 11-23-2010 07:37 PM

All I know is that this is the beginning of the AWESOME Era.

;)

It really wasnt.

1up 11-23-2010 07:46 PM

But John Cena was the reason this all came about. So I really don't think this has anything to do with Linda's running. The Attitude era didn't really have much blood in the first place. apart from those first blood and hell in a cell match's.

Swearing, and random antics would make this work. including the
random diva naked part. Remember Sable? Lol.... All I am saying is, with Cena now gone from the company. Would anything change?..

How old are you like 6?. Yes this thread might be old, but it's a simple question. I'm sure if their was a problem with me posting this thread the moderators, would have closed it by now.. But thanks for your comment.

Anybody Thrilla 11-23-2010 08:09 PM

The younger generation IS getting behind The Miz, though. My 10 year old cousin loves him. Also, if you're able to go back and watch Raw, you'll see a kid around the same age (if not younger) MARKING THE FUCK OUT when The Miz win the title. Check out all the "I'M AWESOME" shirts in the crowd.

Good idea. I think I will close it...
