Jake The Snake is my all time favorite wrestler. My first wrestling memory involves him. Good thread idea and I'll post more on him when I have the time.

He cut some of the best promos in the history of the business. He truly was a poet.

Pretty shitty that you guys are focusing on the drunken shit side of him in HIS appreciation thread. 20+ years in the business and an overall solid body or work...he deserves better than people posting his mistakes.

You are right... Jake is a family friend and I have had many a conversation with him... He seems to battle a lot of deamons but in his heart he is a good man... let show some pride in the man who led the way for wrestlers today....:nono:

I just found this and I almost teared up. I recently watched his biography DVD the WWE put out several years ago and to hear some of those things out of his mouth were pretty touching.

Jake has had his problems but he's an amazing performer and I'd still much rather watch him durring his rougher patches than WWE nowadays

I fail to see the greatness in Jake "The Snake" Roberts...I really do.

He invented the DDT whats not to love...some awesome themes too.

Always thought he was overated to be honest.

Wrestled on a show with him about five years ago, and he trained with us the day before, and he was just a complete waste. The promoter paid him a ridiculous amount (something like 700 pounds plus accomodation), when all he did was a QUICK match, IE two punches, DDT, the end, and then waffled on for about 20 minutes about how he loves the industry etc.

Dunno really, never really cared about him before that, and this didn't exactly change my opinion of him.

I stayed as far away from Jake as I could when I saw him at a Full Impact Pro show but, I could still smell that wicked vomit-whiskey combination. He completely fucked over Larry "Sweet n' Sour" Sweeney while he was there.

If he really "loved the industry", he wouldn't have thrown his career away because of the booze and drugs.

Can't find a clip of Cena no selling the DDT, but we all saw it in horror.

Why isn't there a tribute to Cena no-selling?

Yeah exactly. And he loves it so much that he charges ricockulous amounts for each appearance, and there are actually promoters dumb enough to go along with it.

(For the record, the show I referred to in my post didn't have a bigger crowd than any other show. Roberts is one hell of a draw)

Hey, if he loved it that much he wouldn't be taking up 20 minutes of ring time in the first place given his age and lack of current relevance.

I really liked his "Snake Pit" segments and his 1988 feud with Rick Rude involving his then-wife Cheryl. And his feud with Sting in WCW was excellent.

jake the snake is a compelling character. he lived it.

i do think he was the borderline-crazy type of brilliant, and he became a mess....

... but he's still finding ways to get just what he wants.

And complete idiots. He had effortless skill and nobody has ever been a better promo. Jake was damn near untouchable when he was sober and it probably the greatest living tragedy in wrestling.

His music was epic.
