Better Wrestler All Time Records

Supreme Olajuwon 12-16-2010 07:36 AM

This matchup seems appropriate. If I had to compare Punk to a wrestler from the past, it'd probably be Piper.

The fire burns and it results in CM Punk being the newest member of the TPWW BW HoF.

dhellova guy 12-16-2010 09:35 AM

?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Piper, hands down.

Punk, maybe in time. Put anyone who voted for Punk today over Piper cant possibly been watching for all that long. Probably dont even know who Piper is.

HOT ROD!!!

Ultra Mantis 12-16-2010 09:44 AM

Two of the best promo guys of all time, but Punk is much better in-ring.

Anybody Thrilla 12-16-2010 10:28 AM

I really would have liked to vote for Punk, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. People can say Punk is better in-ring, but until I see a Punk match that's better than Piper's Intercontinental title match with Bret Hart at Wrestlemania 8, I'm voting Piper.

HOT ROD!!!

Piper was a staple during the WWF days and he was by far one of the best when it came to cutting promos. Piper's Pit more or less paved the way for the likes of Carlito's Cabana, The Highlight Reel, The Peep Show, The VIP Lounge, etc.

I give Piper props for being a legend and being entertaining during the earlier days of WWF, but Punk just has that "it" factor that Hot Rod never had IMO.

CSL 12-16-2010 10:48 AM

It's Piper, come on. Punk is great and everything and in 10 years might be in a position to topple Piper but sure as fuck not now. Piper is currently ahead in just about every category except maybe straight ability/ability to put consistently the better match on and even that is questionable. I know this place loves Punk and some people would vote him over Jesus in a nice guy poll but he's no Piper yet. What ABT said also.

What? Piper defined 'it' factor. If he was 'in his prime' today, he'd have Flair amounts of World title reigns.

I think this sums it up perfectly :y:

XCaliber 12-16-2010 11:28 AM

If we're comparing them in their primes i'd say Hot Rod all the way.

Innovator 12-16-2010 11:41 AM

I'm the biggest Punker supporter here probably, and even I'm voting for Piper. I'm pretty sure Punk would smack you for voting for him over Hot Rod.

TWO MINUTES of Roddy talking got people interested in the Cena/Wade/Orton thing at Survivor Series.

CSL 12-16-2010 12:58 PM

From 9-1 Punk to 10-10

PIPER DIDNT HAVE THE "IT" FACTOR?!?!? Is that a joke? Is that an NXT reference or something?

I like CM Punk as well as the next guy (well, not as much as some, I guess), but to say he is better then Roddy Piper RIGHT NOW is recockulus.

I think Piper gets a bad rap becuase he never held the title, but if he was around today, trust me, he'd be a multi-time champion.

Remember this too: Piper, IMHO, was just as intremental in getting Wrestlemania I off the ground as Hogan. You think Orndorff could have done it alone? Who could you substitute for Piper and make that event memorable? King Kong Bundy? Iron Shiek? Volkoff? Nope.

Pipers "it" rating is off the fuckin charts. He has more "it" in his pinky then most people have in there hold bodies. I'd still watch him to this day. I marked out big time for Pipers pit.

Nicky Fives 12-16-2010 01:43 PM

I see Punk and Piper virtually equal on the microphone and Punk miles ahead in the ring...... I go with Punk

BizarroKing 12-16-2010 01:53 PM

Punk for TPWW HOF!

Rammsteinmad 12-16-2010 02:15 PM

For the comments that say about comparing them both in their primes, how can we truly say what Punk's prime is at this point in his career?

That may sound a bit stupid, but Punk's return from injury could bring forth the greatest stuff the history of pro wrestling/superstaring has ever seen.

I made my vote by what I know here and now. Piper was good, but to be fair he was a bit before my time, so most of what I know was his WCW stuff and old videos/DVDs/youtube.

Punk on the other hand, is the goods. :y:

Tazz Dan 12-16-2010 03:10 PM

Piper is one of the all time greats. Anybody who votes against him had better have a good reason for it!

Like me, I just think Punk deserves the HOF like I said last round :shifty:

Tazz Dan 12-16-2010 03:11 PM

Also, I voted before I looked at the standings. Actually thought Piper would be killing him.

Attitude99 12-16-2010 03:16 PM

Easily The Hot Mothafuckin Rod, Punk is average, how did he get so far ?

Tazz Dan 12-16-2010 03:46 PM

Because people enjoy him?

Wishbone 12-16-2010 04:10 PM

This one was really tough Piper is one of the all time greats and his mic work is almost unrivaled but Punk has been more entertaining in the ring for me then Piper ever was and his promos can stand their own even against Piper's so in the end I had to go with Punk for this one

dhellova guy 12-16-2010 04:26 PM

*sigh*

I'm gunna make an ass out of myself here, but i'm stupified.

Piper was great, on the mic AND in the ring. His early matches with Flair are classics. His matches with Hogan are watchable BECAUSE of him. He tore it up with Snuka. He made me believe that Mr. T was legit.

I am far from a Punk hater, but COME ON!!!!!!!

I will grant that Punk has a better move set then Piper, but very few had the moves back then that we see today. Pipers ring psychology, his believability, energy, fire...

ya know what? Just go watch his match with Bret Hart from Wrestlemania VII.

Jeritron 12-16-2010 04:36 PM

I recognize that Punk is probably getting a lot of votes because of the high level of praise for him currently on these boards, but I don't think that means Piper is the absolute correct answer.
It's hard for me to subscribe to the idea that there is a factual answer, or plead with people who disagree.
I love Piper, but I honestly may just enjoy Punk more by now.

That's like Flair vs _____. Other than a couple wrestlers, it is generally consensus that Flair is the best. That doesn't mean I have to feel that way.
I can think of 10 guys I'd vote over Flair, personally. I would never argue that Mick Foley is "greater" than Flair, but I simply enjoy him more.

That doesn't mean Piper isn't great, but I think this is a preference poll, and not an objective question of who is a bigger legend or has a better body of work.

With all that being said, I would say this is pretty close for me.
I feel compelled to vote both ways.

Tazz Dan 12-16-2010 05:30 PM

Not that I'm saying people shouldn't vote against Piper, hell I'm almost ashamed I didn't. But can we stop using his match against Bret at Mania 8 as the reason to vote for him. He had so many more great moments. Probably not as many great matches, but moments, yes.

Emperor Smeat 12-16-2010 05:45 PM

Tough choice since both are great with promos and can put on entertaining matches but my vote went with Piper.

Vince could have chosen anyone to face Hogan and Mr T in the 1st Wrestlemania but he knew Piper was the best choice as the villain and to help Hogan's road to becoming the great superstar he became in the mainstream.

To be fair, I didn't see any of Piper in pre-WWF and early WWF years but at the same time didn't see much of Punk during his ROH and TNA years either.

Punk eventually will become equal to Piper in a few more years and maybe even surpass him since Punk is very well-rounded as a wrestler and as a speaker/announcer.

Ok, I would probably agree with your premise, maybe I'm just not liking some of the reasons people are giving. He had tremendus in ring talent, it is just different back then then it is now. But saying that Punk is miles ahead of Piper talent wise is incorrect. The difference is not that great.

I dont remember this match being posted anywhere else, but granted, I do smoke alot of crack, so I could have missed it. But it was a great match, and made Bret as a singles competitor.

Alright, I can tell i've said enough on this topic, vote however you want.

I'm going back to my pipe...

The Gold Standard 12-16-2010 08:41 PM

To me it was such a coin flip. I actually flipped a coin. Punk won.

CSL 12-16-2010 09:21 PM

TPWW.net/wrestlingforum never ceases to amaze me.

Xero 12-16-2010 09:28 PM

On one hand, Piper is, to me, bar-none, the greatest talker of all time. No one comes close, and he still has it, all these years later.

Punk isn't quite there with Piper on promos, but he's WAY up there. But Piper easily beats him out on promos.

In-ring, Piper was great. Piper/Valentine Dog Collar is one of my favorite matches in fact. But it does come down to the time and the talent he worked with, and on a whole (at least in WWF, which is all I can really talk about) he didn't have that many great matches when it comes to in-ring work.

Punk, though, always brings it. I can't name any match of his that I would consider a top ten favorite, but his matches always entertain me and have me glued to the screen.

When it comes to in-ring, Punk wins overall because he's constantly working with GOOD wrestlers and/or constantly putting on GOOD to GREAT matches.

They both have excellent psychology.

Punk is an amazing heel, especially now because there is no one who is at all like him in WWE.

Piper, though, is THE heel. Piper was as much, if not more important than Hogan was going into WrestleMania. Without Piper, Mania wouldn't have happened. Without Hogan? I think it could have happened with someone else who had the Hogan push.

There is a definite generational thing here. I prefer Punk's in-ring style to Piper's. But mic work wise, Piper is timeless.

In the end, I'm going with Piper. He is an absolute legend that will live on. I honestly couldn't say the same about Punk right now. In a few years I could easily see it. But if he retired right now? No.

Me too. But ya know, people are entitled to their own opinion. There's no right or wrong answer. :-\

Oh absolutely. It just makes phantom question marks appear over my head at times.

I like Punk but come on. Jesus Christ.

It obviously changes things that Punk is in his prime, and Piper's prime ended over 15 years ago.
That obviously doesn't change legacy and body of work, but some people are going to feel stonger about a guy who is on fire and full of potential right now, than someone they've seen stink out the joint in WCW.

I think a lot of it is probably that people have just not seen any of/enough of Piper. Which in a round about way is what you said. And there isn't really anything that can be done about that.

Doesn't make it any less gay though you bastardizing bastards.

I move that in order to qualify to vote in Better Wrestler, you must have 5,000 logged hours of professional wrestling viewing spread across roughly equal periods from the 80's, 90's and 00's.
