What Wrestler Can Still Make You Care

I've been thinking about this today, and I've been wondering.

What wrestler, any promotion, anywhere in the world, can still make you care about their matches and get you emotionally involved? They can be living or dead.

For me it would be Davey Richards, Stone Cold, Owen Hart, and Chris Jericho.

I'm there are others that can still emotionally hook me. But those are the ones off the top of my head.

Swiss Ultimate 12-21-2010 01:06 AM

Heels:
Jericho
Miz
CM Punk
Dolph Ziggler
There's another heel who recently really managed to annoy me and I like that he was able to do it, but I totally can't remember who it is.

Faces:
Daniel Bryan
HBK

SOCCER LEGS 12-21-2010 01:06 AM

for me it's chris benoit... with him you just never know if you're gonna get a 5 star match or a double homicide.

Swiss Ultimate 12-21-2010 01:08 AM

He still makes you care???

I'm all for the Benoit jokes but, this is out of place in the context of this thread.

legendkillerRKO 12-21-2010 01:08 AM

CM Punk because a.) he is great on the mic and b.) he generally fueds with people I dont like (Cena, Jeff Hardy, Mysterio, etc...)

Lock Jaw 12-21-2010 01:08 AM

I don't see how they can still make me care about their matches if they are dead and not having any matches (theoretically)

I see where you're coming from. I mean like, going back and watching their old matches.

Example. Say you were a huge Macho Man fan back in the day, and you really put all your emotion into him. Do those matches still make you care when you go back and re-watch them?

Skippord 12-21-2010 01:12 AM

Edge, CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, Chris Hero, John Morrison apparently

Lock Jaw 12-21-2010 01:16 AM

I agree with all these names except Stone Cold (who I don't like) and Chris Hero (Who I have never seen).

I add to the list Christian. I will never ever forget the time that he faced a bland face Randy Orton in Orton's "always concussed" era in which I DETESTED him. Christian fought him and really got me into the match to the point where I was kinda rooting for the good guy, even though I hated him.

Skippord 12-21-2010 01:18 AM

Christian too

Swiss Ultimate 12-21-2010 01:27 AM

Kurt Angle used to do it for me...hmm, TNA wrestlers who can make me care...

Babyface AJ Styles, Wolfe...and...um...Tommy Dreamer.

The One 12-21-2010 01:39 AM

Ric Flair (doesn't go in the ring anymore)
Shawn Michaels (retired)
Triple H (injured)
New Age Outlaws (retired?)
Christian (injured)
Chris Jericho (leave of absence)
Kevin Nash (retired)
Tully Blanchard (retired)
Steve Austin (retired)
The Rock (retired)

So, basically, no one who's active right now....

Tazz Dan 12-21-2010 02:42 AM

Edge, CM Punk, Jericho, Destor, Christian, HHH.

Jeritron 12-21-2010 03:22 AM

Plenty. Some a lot more than others. Those would probably be my favorites, but there are really too many wrestlers to name who have/can make me give a fuck if the circumstances are right (story, match, performance)

My top "5" would probably be Shawn, Jericho, Austin, Foley, Taker

Indifferent Clox 12-21-2010 04:24 AM

Quakenbush, danielson, kaval, punk, Richards, castignoli, Bobby fish, John moxley, a few others

Sadly I got the double homicide no show and had to endure Edge pulling down Flair's trunks. That ass hunts my dreams. :'(

Anyway, put any of these guys in the ring and I'm hooked.

Austin, Jericho, Eddie, Owen, HBK, Rock, Edge, Tajiri, Christian, Kurt Angle & JBL

dronepool 12-21-2010 05:06 AM

Austin, Jericho, The Rock, Edge, Christian, Daniel Bryan, Kaval, CM Punk, Undertaker, HBK, John Morrison, The Miz, HHH, RVD (although not always while in TNA)

muffalufagus 12-21-2010 02:44 PM

CM Punk, Jericho, Daniel Bryan Danielson, Triple H, HBK.

Which Richards?

Punk.

I read the RAW results this week and the only thing that really piqued my interest was Punk coming out and beating down Cena with a chair. On the one hand I love the idea of Punk getting into what will most likely be a high profile feud with the top guy in the WWE... on the other hand, I worry how much of a bitch he's going to look like once it's all said and done (see: Wade Barrett).

Indifferent Clox 02-08-2011 12:59 AM

davey richards

CSL 02-08-2011 01:10 AM

What does Davey Richards make you care about, the skinny guy he's kicking as hard as he can?

Indifferent Clox 02-08-2011 01:41 AM

Watch evolve 1 and you will see

CSL 02-08-2011 01:58 AM

I've seen enough Davey Richards matches. There are only so many illogical spots, stiff forearms/kicks and MOVEZ you can take before it all becomes a bit of a blur, especially since the rest of the card was probably full of it as well. Let me guess how it goes, they come out, they hit each other as hard as they can for a bit, they do shitloads of MOVEZ for a bit with some more hitting each other as hard as they can interspersed and then they go home. Close?

He's shit. Dude walks into a room in a country he's not from telling guys he's never met before and is due to work with to 'follow him' and let him 'take the lead' because 'he's been in the business for 3 (or 4) whole years'. Only to have one of the guys he worked with beat the shit out of him for 15 minutes when they did go on and Davey to turn into a sheepish kid afterwards. What a guy.

Furious Beardsley 02-08-2011 01:59 AM

I enjoy watching Davey Richards as well. Saw him on Saturday in Lasalle, IL. Had a great match.

djoutcry 02-08-2011 02:08 AM

Everybody, I order you to go back and change your lists. You have to mention HHH as the number 1 wrestler that makes you care.

tsk tsk

My list: HHH, SCSA, The Rock, HBK, New Age Outlaws, Punk

Tajiri...not so much. Never liked cruiserweights...

Fignuts 02-08-2011 02:36 AM

This is basically just, "Who are your favorite wrestlers". Boring.

Make it current only and it is an interesting question.

Indifferent Clox 02-08-2011 02:43 AM

No that match has groundwork at the begginning, and no it's not yr typical shine heat comeback match but it's a good match. Dude that's like saying I bet that indie song has some moog in it and it doesn't use chorus verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus x2 format so it's bad. It's just not the same style as wwe or awa or nwa. It's definetly not just 'moves' as you like to degregate so many matches down to because you have this raven shoot you listen to 15 times a day.

Furious Beardsley 02-08-2011 02:45 AM

This thread should have stayed dead i think.

Like all of my threads. I just can't think of anything interesting that hasn't already been done to death.

Where did I mention shine heat comeback? That's a match layout at it's most basic. I wish there were more simple shine heat comeback matches on shows like this and not a bunch of guys that are such fucking marks for themselves that they feel the need to fit as many moves into 7 minutes as they possibly can because they're such big stars that they've 'gotta get their stuff in' because, you know, they're so over and the punters all paid to see that guy rush through HIS moveset or they're so god awfully bland and boring that they need to kick somebody as hard as they can (you know, the exact opposite of what professional wrestling is all about) to get the same reaction that some guy that learned a bit about pacing, about actual psychology, about timing, about structure can get from looking at the crowd at the right time or from throwing a punch at the right time. And no, the indie music analogy doesn't work since that's not throwing a bunch of stuff together for no reason whatsoever other than the fact that 'it's different'. Actually, wait a minute...

And what are you babbling on about with "It's definetly not just 'moves' as you like to degregate so many matches down to because you have this raven shoot you listen to 15 times a day"?

Jim Cornette mostly annoys me nowadays more than anything because he's kind of played out when it comes to rambling on but I don't think I've heard a more appropriate quote over the last 18 months than 'nowadays there are more marks in the dressing room than out in the audience' or something to that affect. You and your likeness are every single thing that is wrong with the wrestling industry on a smaller scale, fuckwits that watch too much puro and shit like Dragon Gate that has manifested into this retarded elitist mentality that 'that's really what wrestling is, none of this mainstream stuff, that's lame', essentially a smart mark mentality to the business as a whole. Where you go out and smack each other in the face with your bony fucking forearms and kick each other as hard as you can with your kickpads on and drop each other on your heads because 'it looks realistic', 'it looks brutal' or simply because that's what you've seen on the latest TakeourselvesdeadfuckingseriousMania 3 DVD rip, despite the artform being doing that stuff without anybody getting hurt, without some fat cunt dropping a young guy on his head. And you wield a small amount of power as well, not enough to actually mean fuck all to anybody that matters but the idiots in the crowd that think this is how wrestling should be or the poor fucker that is going to show up to start training and people like you will make them think that this is the way, how it should be done and they won't know any different because 'omggg I'm training with real pro wrestlers!!!' And this is happening every single day in every single part of the world where there is professional wrestling. Only most of them should be ashamed to go anywhere near the word 'professional'.

And as I mentioned, feel free to explain your Raven comment. Because it's not at all possible that somebody could work these things out for themselves is it, it's not like I'm around fucking idiots like you what feels like every day of my existence. Please die. Seriously.

XL 02-08-2011 07:25 AM

I think I just fell in love with CSL.

Indifferent Clox 02-08-2011 12:09 PM

It's all still a work. It's not like dudes are coming out of matches like IFC guys. They hit hard in soft places. It's still a work. It's a different syltyle of working no better or worse than showman style. And sotr with raven pretty much said the same thing you said. The sport and art of pro wrestling are evolving. And let me tell you I've won over more nonwrestling fans with roh, evolve and dgusa, than in the years I tried to win them over with wwe wcw or even ecw. My mark friends watch those and wonder why www doesn't work like that

Grablot 02-08-2011 03:25 PM

Pretty much the only guys in current WWE who can make me care are

1) CM Punk
2) The Miz
3) John Cena
4) Big Show
5) Taker

The others I can give or take but anytime these are involved i am interested!
