2011 Rock Hall Inductees (Color me surprised...)

I can't believe I missed this. Anyway, my predictions:

2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees:
Alice Cooper*
Beastie Boys*
Bon Jovi*+
Chic
Neil Diamond*
Donovan
Dr. John+
J. Geils Band
LL Cool J+
Darlene Love
Laura Nyro
Donna Summer+
Joe Tex+
Tom Waits*
Chuck Willis

Legend:
* Who SHOULD go in.
+ Who probably WILL go in.

Who went in?
Alice Cooper
Neil Diamond
Dr. John
Darlene Love
Tom Waits

Well, 3 that I felt should go in did. 1 that I thought WILL did. and Darlene Love.

Now, they need to get Rush and Weird Al in there.

Good for Alice Cooper and I like Neil Diamond. He's not really rock and roll but whatever, that whole concept went out the window years ago. I have no clue who Dr. John and Darlene Love are.

Jeritron 01-05-2011 11:14 PM

Why is Rush not even nominated, yet again? It's criminal.

The Mask 01-06-2011 02:55 AM

ll cool j? really? did he do something i don't know about

Sixx 01-06-2011 05:06 AM

No idea who Dr. John or Darlene Love are.

The names suck so I won't even bother googling.

Seems like I'm not the only one.

Jeritron 01-06-2011 05:17 AM

At least Alice Cooper is finally getting in. I can't believe some of those names on the ballot, and Rush and Iron Maiden aren't.
That's a joke to me.

Jeritron 01-06-2011 05:17 AM

FTR, The Beastie Boys should definitely go in

This. Fucking tragic that Maiden and Rush aren't in, yet LL fucking Cool J is being considered.

Sixx 01-06-2011 04:30 PM

If they really want to include a hip-hop artist in the Rock Hall of Fame, why the fuck LL Cool J and not Public Enemy or Run DMC? I don't recall LL Cool J recording anything rock'n'roll'.

Beastie Boys gotta get in someday anyway.

thedamndest 01-06-2011 04:54 PM

Run DMC is in. They made a big deal about including them because they collaborated with Aerosmith.

Sixx 01-06-2011 05:34 PM

Ah, ok.

weather vane 01-06-2011 05:38 PM

SO MINT for Alice

First rapper to go platinum, plus he pioneered the entire concept of pop-oriented rap, essentially making him the first rap artist to successfully fully cross over.

I'm by no means a card carrying member of his fan club, but this is a guy who kicked down a whole lot of barriers along the way. He certainly belongs in this discussion .

The Naitch 01-06-2011 09:13 PM

rick rubin produced his first album I think, plus that part in the movie.

"Radio"

Rammsteinmad 01-07-2011 01:57 AM

Definitely agree about Rush and Iron Maiden.

Genesis should be in too if they're not already. And Yes too. And King Crimson too.

Fuck I dunno who is or isn't in the HoF (which is a joke anyway), but there's a lot of prog rock bands from the 70's who I fail to see nominated year after year.

El Vaquero de Infierno 01-07-2011 11:45 AM

Yes are probably in the Cheese Hall of fame.

Yeah, but what did he do for Rock'n'Roll music?

Confused 01-07-2011 01:30 PM

Iron Maiden should definitely have been inducted by now.

Though judging by past inductees and some of the acts on the list would you really give a fuck?

Fignuts 01-07-2011 02:20 PM

And why the fuck isn't Skepsis mentioned?

What have (insert any of the dozens of other artist names that this applies to whom have already been inducted) done for rock and roll music?

People shouldn't get hung up on the name whatsoever, as all it can do is kick off ridiculous arguments. "The rock era" by its odd definition is popular music from 1955 on. LL Cool J clearly falls into that broad, vague category.

Err, no. Just no.

Pretty sure there's a rap hall of fame so just induct him there.

Vox Populi 01-07-2011 04:47 PM

There's not, and RUN DMC and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five are already in, so the precedent's been set.

If we're going to get into disallowing people from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for "not being rock and roll", then we're going to have to remove a whole shitload of artists, up to and including the majority of the original nominees from back in '86.

parkmania 01-07-2011 04:48 PM

For those that don't know Dr. John, he was very influential in popularizing the New Orleans "sound". Here are the 2 songs most associated with him.

Run DMC had some impact on rock'n'roll, don't know about the other two.

And what's next, we're gonna add cheesy pop like Backstreet Boys? Come on.

Vox Populi 01-07-2011 05:50 PM

No worries about Backstreet getting in; they fall short of the criteria required for entry.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five had no impact on rock whatsoever, nor did previously enshrined cheesy pop acts such as ABBA and Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers.

Again, you seem hung up on the title "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" despite the fact that it's never been exclusive to rock musicians.

Yeah, I am hung up on the title, cause if that's how it's called, that's what it should be.

And to be honest, I don't quite know the history of it and what kind of pop, rap, jazz or whatever bands got in, so yeah. I don't feel like checking, cause I only might get frustrated.

Jeritron 01-07-2011 06:19 PM

Even from that angle, I still don't know that LL Cool J deserves to be in. There are dozens of rap acts I'd put in before him.
And don't get me started on Rush and Maiden again.

Vox Populi 01-07-2011 06:27 PM

There are several rap acts I'd put in before LL, but I don't know about dozens. Again, like him or not (and honestly, other than rapidly aging/widening housewives, who actually likes him in this day and age?) his role as a legitimate pioneer can't be underestimated, and he's going to have to get in before you can make cases for those who came after him - without A, B and C, there would never have been a W,X,Y or a Z and all that.

mhirn3 03-04-2011 07:24 PM

Alice Cooper should've been in a long time ago...I guess he finally was sick of it and said no more mr nice guy and got in ;)
