Is Jim Ross taking shots at today's announcers?

Each had their own, natural style and none of them, more often than not, portrayed the role of a wrestling announcer and none of the aforementioned sought to be the ‘hip, ESPN Sports Center-type’ and strive to be glib and cool and come off as disingenuous.

Sounds to me like he's not a fan of Matt Striker, but he may be talking about Todd Grisham too. Personally, I like the new style of commentator. What do you think? Is JR on the money here, or is he just bitter becaue he's not in the spotlight anymore?

erickman 01-07-2011 06:07 PM

he could be goofing on coachman too

Anybody Thrilla 01-07-2011 06:12 PM

Maybe, but that tone strikes me as more of an attack than a rib.

Emperor Smeat 01-07-2011 06:15 PM

Yeah that sounds more like a dig at Coachman but to be fair, Coachman never said he hated his time in the WWE since he still gives occasional references to wrestlers or wrestling when he does his highlights. Could also be a dig at Striker but that is because Striker has a lot of knowledge about wrestling compared to the other announcers in WWE which makes him seem like a smartass.

All those people JR mentioned either were owners/bookers of a company or had decades of experience as an announcer and/or wrestler which helped create their special personality as an announcer to the fans.

Savio 01-07-2011 06:17 PM

he might be taking a few quiet shots.

Xero 01-07-2011 06:18 PM

If I were getting into the business today to announce I'd study Jim Ross.

I almost said 'quiet shots' in the thread title, but decided against it.

He probably really wanted to answer that, but he didn't want to sound arrogant.

MoFo 01-07-2011 06:37 PM

Yeah hes def bitter about not being an announcer anymore.

Rammsteinmad 01-07-2011 07:05 PM

Bitter.

And if I was getting into annoucing today, my biggest inspiration would be CM Punk.

Anybody Thrilla 01-07-2011 07:15 PM

Scott Stanford for me.

Grablot 01-07-2011 07:22 PM

This begs one question.

Yes, of course.

BigDaddyCool 01-07-2011 07:41 PM

he sounds old and bitter.

Savio 01-07-2011 07:57 PM

He is just an old-school guy not liking new school tendencies

XL 01-07-2011 08:19 PM

So what you're saying is, he's bitter.

Raven Reaper 01-07-2011 08:28 PM

I liked how Jim Ross pissed off Cole so much on one episode of Raw last year for one night commentating only.. I HATE COLE...

And I enjoyed Cole saying goodbye and good riddance and Jim Ross just slapped his head with his cowboy hat hard... Fuck Cole..

Jim Ross >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Cole. I also hate his stupid repetitious I have an e-mail everytime his laptop "beeps." He's a stupid BOT REPLIER....

Anybody Thrilla 01-07-2011 08:34 PM

What did Santa get you last month, Raven Reaper?

XL 01-07-2011 08:40 PM

Hey Thrilla, you're a mod, right? Can you have a word with AAA about installing some kind of IQ test during the sign-up process?

Anybody Thrilla 01-07-2011 08:45 PM

Well that wouldn't be any fun.

XL 01-07-2011 08:54 PM

I'm not here for fun!!! I'm here for informed debate/conversation with like-minded folk not idiots with poor SPAG!!!

Anybody Thrilla 01-07-2011 09:00 PM

He may be a bit of a mark, but you don't have to insult his cooking. I find his spaghetti to be passable.

This basically.

Mr. Nerfect 01-07-2011 10:47 PM

Josh Mathews is amazing right now. The guy just seems to click well. He's studied who his peers are, and he essentially has chemistry with all of them. He can switch between play-by-play and color pretty much seamlessly. The only time he comes off "too cool for school" is when he is on NXT sometimes. But that's sort of a running gag there.

...and NXT is about as relevant as Sunday Night HeAT.

Aguakate 01-07-2011 11:27 PM

I think you guys may be reading too much into what JR wrote.

James Steele 01-07-2011 11:33 PM

Jim Ross can do whatever the fuck he wants.

JR or Cole shoot vid would be great!

MoFo 01-08-2011 10:03 AM

Srsly Cole right now is way more 'enjoyable' on commentary than JR was the past few yrs. So is Josh Matthews. JR needs to STFU.

James Steele 01-08-2011 10:23 AM

You need to STFU.
