How Did Police Academy Last So Long?

I watched them while I was laid up, and man. When I was ten, they didn't seem that bad, but they weren't even great then. So I'm laid out and get a nostalgia trip and watch them. First couple aren't horrible, but how did this last as a franchise? Fuck, were the 80s that boring?

...wait, maybe you don't have to answer that last one.

CSL 02-16-2011 10:47 PM

I started whistling the Police Academy theme as soon as I started reading this thread. Feel at least 7% happier than I did beforehand.

Kris P Lettus 02-16-2011 10:51 PM

First 3 were amazing..

The best shot of all time was in the 80s..

The Blue Oyster

Yeah, but Steve Guttenburg left the franchise halfway through. Shouldn't that have killed it?

whiteyford 02-17-2011 09:49 AM

Theres supposed to be a new one getting made, Guttenburgs even coming back for it. Can't be any worse than Mission to Moscow at least.

I saw that, but considering the planned release was 2007, I'm kind of thinking it got dropped.

And don't challenge them. I'm pretty sure they could manage to make it worse than 7 if they tried. I've seen the rest of the series. They like to push downward barriers.

whiteyford 02-17-2011 10:00 AM

It was on yahoo again recently, but everythings getting remade lately so you never know, not like the cast is busy.

They kinda did lower the bar again with the TV series, even the cartoon came out looking like the Godfather in comparison.

People love that guy who makes crazy sounds.

Ouch, really?

Never saw the cartoon or the TV series.

I will say that the early Police Academy's were great.

Mauser: Can someone explain how this happened? (raises hands to show the hair attached.)

Mahoney: I can sir, and if you don't stop that, you can go blind.

Hanso Amore 02-18-2011 11:07 AM

Carl Winslow?

whiteyford 02-18-2011 11:12 AM

Apparantly Robocop makes an appearance in one of the cartoon episodes, who needs Steve Guttenburg!

The Stonecutters?

Anyway, you're serious? Robocop? That's almost as absurd as WCW.

whiteyford 02-19-2011 02:45 PM

Only saw a screenshot but it looked like Jones and someone else stood talking to Robocop, kinda wish it was out on dvd now.

LOL I saw young Bob as Zed for the first time in a long time and realised he looks like a friend of mine....If my friend had spent his formative years on meth and heroin.

What I don't get is the adaptation to TV that happened to every popular movie ever in the 80s.

There was a TV series for Harry and the Henderson for Christ's sake.

The 70s and 80s were eras for "throw everything you can up and see what sticks" in TV.

As bad as some of the adaptations were, I still think I prefer that mentaility to the one of "half the shows must be reality TV and the other half crime dramas."

Swiss Ultimate 02-20-2011 10:32 AM

Yeah, the reality stuff is pretty unwatchable. For every one thing I like (Kitchen Nightmares) I hate literally 60 other shows.

Kane Knight 02-20-2011 07:08 PM

I don't watch any of them. I don't normally care, either. I just wish there was more initiative in trying new things. I mean, especially since if one's successful, there's literally 50 just like it in a month.

I did watch a couple of forensics dramas, though. It's not like I completely hate the genre, I just hate the number of them they had at one time. Crime shows in general, really. For every good law enforcement show, there's like 90 bad ones. And everything else seems to get canceled.
