War Games vs. The Elimiation Chamber

Both of these matches had been around a long time now. War Games was a staple in the NWA and WCW, and the Elimination Chamber has housed some great matches, along with many title changes over its ten year existence.

So let's talk about these matches.

Which match, in your opinion, through their respective history, has had the highest levels of importance? Which has had the better matches? Which is your favorite?

Also, discuss the matches in general, and post videos.

Everyone's going to say War Games because of nostalgia and a longer lineage, coupled with the fact that they've been deprived of the gimmick for 10 years now.

But in all honesty, I might think the Elimination Chamber is better. I'm not sure. It certainly has the potential to be.
The first chamber is incredible. As a gimmick, I've really grown to love the Chamber and how it's used now.
Like any other match type, it's nothing special when it's just overused or thrown together, but thankfully they've found a good place for it and it's becoming a tradition.

War Games would be great to see again, but it needs a proper stable feud to go with it. I also think the roofed cage gimmick has been more or less exploited by Hell in a Cell and War Games may not seem as cool to newer audiences.

WarGames, hands down!!!

Elimination Chamber. I like it's current placement as the last chance into a Wrestlemania title match, though they do make it a little too obvious who's going to win a lot of the time. With clever booking the chamber can be unpredicatable and can really help to build guys like Morrison as legit title contenders.

Just a question. If WWE were to every actually use the War Games match would the cage be the same as it was in WCW or would the cage be raised a la Hell In A Cell?

Definitely WAR GAMES

Chamber.

Way more exciting and more possibilities than War Games.

SlickyTrickyDamon 03-13-2011 08:09 PM

Best of both worlds: 6-person tag team elimination chamber match.

I think that I would have to go with the chamber though. It seemed that they were just throwing randoms teams together when the Horseman died until the nWo came about. Studd's Stable is really War Games worthy? The Dungeon of Doom? Plus Russo won War Games 2000, so come on.

The chamber has more spots and is an elimination match. If War Games had some sort of elimination style I think I would like it more.

I don't know a whole lot about War Games but it looks like the faces won an overwhelming majority of the time. Is this a feud ending match or was that just to send the crowd home happy?

I'd go with Elimination Chamber because it seems like there's more of a chance that a heel could win and I didn't watch War Games growing up so I have zero nostalgia for it.

Elimination Chamber. I would rather see an exciting singles style match.

Elimination Chamber..... always thought WarGames was a clusterfuck....

Loose Cannon 03-13-2011 08:45 PM

This!! And I really enjoy the chamber. It's a spot fest that can have a great match quality too. While wargames was fun, there a no stables that would make it interesting, beyond the initial nexus v corre.

Although the winner of clusterfuck match of all time is WCW's WW3. The three rumbled at once was just overloadingly bad.

I always liked Elimination Style matches better. When you have that many guys it should be a matter of elimination down to the final winner. First pinfall for a victory for a 4-on-4 match seems stupid to me.

thedamndest 03-13-2011 10:51 PM

Not at all related but I would like to see World War 3. I don't think I'd make it a PPV though because they have the Rumble and that is better. But it would make an awesome Raw main event.

Fox 03-13-2011 11:16 PM

World War 3 was good when it was done right. I really liked how in 1998, The Giant cleared out his ring super early and just chilled while the other two rings continued to battle it out. Then it came down to a WCW vs NWO finale with Nash winning the thing thanks to Hogan.

I think WWE could book a World War 3 and make it smart and entertaining, especially with the Nexus and Corre running around. It could be all about forming alliances before the PPV to try and last it out until the final ring.

Of course, in retrospect, WW3 was just WCW's way of trying to match the WWF's Royal Rumble in build-up to Starrcade.

Emperor Smeat 03-14-2011 01:06 AM

Elimination Chamber more than War Games although the team aspect of War Games tended to be done better than the random teams for most Survivor Series matchups.

The Chamber also allowed for more different types of spots to be possible due to its large size in comparison with the cage in War Games being to short to do any real hi-flying moves. Best example would be Sid not having enough height for his powerbomb and almost breaking a guy in half from the move.

Wargames ftw.

Theo Dious 03-14-2011 10:05 AM

Fuck War Games. There, I said it.

First of all, any match that involves two rings is dumb as hell. Futhermore, the lack of pinfalls gave the match endings no build, and, as has been said, having a single win determine the entire match is cheap, and everyone was in it to the end. You knew you were in for a predictably long ride and the endings always seemed extremely slow and blown up to me. Finally, the cage itself always looked broken down and flimsy.

By contrast, the EC has a fast pace, and an unpredictability as to when someone is going to be eliminated. The pace is quicker and holds your attention more, as opposed to a WG match where you know that nothing spectacular is likely to happen until everyone is in. The Chamber structure itself is also a fantastic piece of equipment. I really think that what gets most people worked up over War Games is the participants more than the match itself.

The original Elimination Chamber match is up there with the first Hell in a Cell, and the "original" Shawn/Razor ladder match, to me.

It usually takes a true innovative classic to get a gimmick over that good.

Shawn was a major part of all 3. Big suprise.
