Sega Master System

Were there any good games on it?

It had some good games although a lot of them were also on the Genesis or on the NES.

The biggest issue was being sandwiched between the NES and Genesis meant a lot of the system's games could be found on other consoles or didn't have the really big name games until the Genesis arrived.

Eklipse 03-23-2011 04:50 PM

In terms of graphics, the SMS blew NES out of the water.

#BROKEN Hasney 03-23-2011 04:54 PM

Yes. Even the Mega Drive "ports" were typically completely different games. The Sonic ones were much harder than the Mega Drive ones and awesome in their own way.

Spiderman Vs. The Kingpin was another personal fave as well as Wonderboy 3.

Ultra Mantis 03-23-2011 04:58 PM

Alex Kidd in Miracle World.

It also seems to be the only Master System game I can remember playing.

:y: My girlfriend is from brazil and the SMS was huge over there, gonna show her this list to see which ones she had :y:

Gertner 03-23-2011 06:01 PM

Alien Syndrome and Rampage were my favourites.

Bad Company 03-24-2011 05:21 AM

Heaps of awesome games. SMS was huge here. Some of the good games I own are.

Enduro Racer.
Spy vs Spy.
Shinobi.
Afterburner.
Outrun.
Wonder Boy.
New Zealand Story.
R-Type.
Mickey Mouse Castle and Land of Illusion.
Bubble Bobble.
Alladin.
Bart vs Space mutants.
Golden Axe.
Jurassic Park.
Space Harrier.

dronepool 03-24-2011 05:38 AM

SMS was my first system.

Action Fighter
After Burner
Kenseiden

Some of the music from that game is ingrained in my mind.

I liked the Master System port of Ultima IV as well, good RPG. Would have been better if two of the manuals that came with it weren't entirely in French though.

Fuck, reading this made it come in my head too.

Rammsteinmad 03-24-2011 07:31 AM

Master System was my first console. Had shit loads of games for it, but ended up selling them pretty cheap. This was before things like Ebay were around.

Shit if I had kept all of it and put it on Ebay now I'd probably make a nice ammount of money out of it.

Riker 03-24-2011 02:26 PM

Road Rash.

There was some badass barbarian game - cant remember what is was . Dude had a Sword he carried like straight up and down by his face.

Gertner 03-24-2011 02:29 PM

Vigilante was pretty decent. First game I had ever beaten.

Same here.

Xero 03-24-2011 07:49 PM

I honestly didn't even know the Master System was released here. Until a few years ago I thought it was a Japan-only system that failed against the NES. My first exposure to Sega was Genesis.

Also found out recently that the Game Gear was the equivalent of a Master System with a bigger pallet. They even released an adapter for Master System games on the Game Gear.

Purgatory 03-24-2011 09:45 PM

Yeah, I have an emulator for the Sega Master System. It had a better quality to it than the Nintendo, but I just couldn't get into anything Sega related afterwards.

Me too but apparently it was huge in brazil.

I had that too. I was terrible at it.

Amazing, a boss you can kill by standing in a single spot. What terrible game design.

Laser Ghost was a good game, though insanely difficult if you were playing it without the Light Phaser, which is the way I played it. The Haunted Portrait used to creep me out as a kid too. :$

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1rizYaPu2U4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And Enduro Racer, as Bad Company mentioned before.

I loved this game as a kid. Simple concept, but actually really fun. I used to play it for hours at a time.

Catchy music too.

The Destroyer 03-27-2011 10:13 AM

I had a Light Phaser. Only ever had Operation Wolf that went along with it though.

Ah memories.

Swiss Ultimate 03-27-2011 11:11 AM

What was the game where you shot mobsters and then you could shoot their ghosts to send them to hell?

lol Rocky was awful.

I still have my old Sega Master System and games.

I used to play Rampage for hours.

I've played Operation Wolf, but it was for the NES.

Tom Guycott 03-27-2011 12:37 PM

Back in the day, I bought a Master System, 2 controllers, the gun, and like 10 games off of a friend of a friend for about $30 (they just got a Genesis, so...) Space Harrier, AfterBurner, Hang On/Safari Hunt, Alex Kidd and the Lost Stars, Shinobi, Great Football, Great Basketball (neither of which were really "great", but they were 2 player) , Astro Warrior, a more arcade accurate Double Dragon than NES had, and Phantasy Star.

I was never really a part of the "Master System Posse", mainly because I could borrow/rent more stuff on the NES, since almost everyone had one... but I don't regret the purchase.

Rocky looks like Kenshiro in that game. I half expected him to make Apollo Creed's head explode, and a fight with Raoh after Drago. ^_^

whiteyford 03-27-2011 03:16 PM

There was a game involving a helicopter, you had to lower a ladder to rescue folk and avoid crashing, cant remember what it was called but it was great. Its going to bug me now:|

Rammsteinmad 03-27-2011 03:20 PM

Desert Strike or Jungle Strike by the sounds of it.

You're thinking of Urban Strike. That was for the Megadrive though.

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/yNvSMwyI8a4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I enjoyed that game. If it wasn't that one it will have been Jungle Strike or Desert Strike.

whiteyford 03-27-2011 03:26 PM

It was something stupid like copter rescue or some bollocks. It was a 2d scrolling game with really shitty graphics but it was addictive.

Drakul 03-27-2011 03:36 PM

Yeah thats it, saved me going up into the attic looking for it.

Gertner 03-28-2011 10:12 AM

Lol I remember getting Alien Syndrome for the SMS when I was 5 and would only beat the first level because the boss on the Second Level scared me.
