Vince McMahon purchasing TNA?

Source: PW Torch

"During WWE's annual shareholders meeting on Friday, WWE CEO Vince McMahon briefly addressed a question on whether he'll consider buying out TNA.

"I don't know that they're for sale," McMahon said in a non-committal fashion. After a long pause as the shareholder asking the question pressed McMahon to give an answer, McMahon added, "Maybe."

The exchange at the end of the conference call was as follows:

Shareholder: When are you going to buy that three-letter company that's based in Nashville, Tenn., because they have the wrong people in charge of that company. Please save the business from Dixie Carter. (McMahon lightly laughs) Stephanie McMahon has more brains than Dixie Carter. (McMahon: Ooh.) I think if you buy it now, there's a shot at fixing that company up because I know you'll put the right people in charge of that company.

McMahon: I'm (long pause) - I don't know that they're for sale.

Shareholder: They're not for sale now, but I'm sure if you offered them something - I don't know, it's a 50/50 shot.

McMahon: Well - (deep groan) Maybe.

The exchange was removed from discussion earlier in the conference about WWE looking to acquire entertainment properties that fit their business model as part of the "New WWE" initiative, which TNA would fit into.

WWE said their goal is to find related content companies and "literally put them through the WWE system to create new revenue (for WWE)." WWE said the long-term goal is to acquire companies related to their content to grow the core business, which is creating content.

Not gonna happen. At least not anytime soon.

Panda Energy has deep pockets and the Carters, while they've recently shown some concern over their daughter Dixie's failure to grow the company, aren't going to throw in the towel and hand their baby over to Vince McMahon just yet. They still have a TV deal that probably isn't going anywhere, they still have some of the biggest names in wrestling history, and they don't rely on a corporate conglomerate the way WCW did to make decisions for them.

As much sense as it makes for WWE-Lite (TNA) to officially become WWE branded, it's not going to happen.

Tazz Dan 04-29-2011 05:38 PM

This never happened

Tazz Dan 04-29-2011 05:39 PM

But this did:

PorkSoda 04-29-2011 05:41 PM

No. That never happened! The decision was reversed....the referee counted fast....that match never happened and you didn't see a damn thing!

VSG 04-29-2011 05:53 PM

I would hope this never happens.

I think TNA will stay in business as long as Hogan doesn't get the belt...

Xero 04-29-2011 06:10 PM

It's not happening anytime soon. And if it did happen, they would not be a brand. They'd take a few select talents, MAYBE do an invasion, and that would be it.

The only reason Vince would ever want to buy TNA is to own the tape library. Anything else would be for the hell of it.

Droford 04-29-2011 06:38 PM

Vince should buy ROH

The Naitch 04-29-2011 06:48 PM

I would fuck Dixie Carter

CSL 04-29-2011 06:50 PM

The sky is blue

The concept of WWE owning and operating another wrestling company completely seperately from their brand is an interesting one.
It allows them to tap into other fan bases or try new things without making changes to their bread and butter.
Of course they'd inevitably do crossovers or talent exchange, but keeping the products mostly seperate in name and direction would be very interesting.

That's the concept I gathered from the "acquire new entertainment properties" bit. They could own and operate anything from another wrestling promotion, to an MMA league, or whatever else, and keep the WWE name mostly off of it directly.

That's something I think Vince has a hard time doing though. Whether it be WWE films, XFL or the bodybuilding federation, all those outside endeavors were ultimately promoted all over the main product and were laced with references and branding that called attention to them being part of the WWF/E. And in every case I think that's something that ultimately hurt them.

Calamondin 04-29-2011 07:44 PM

Wow, the stockholder asking that question was a huge douche. "Hey Vince, your daughter is dumb, but not as dumb as Dixie Carter!"

Next Big Thing 04-29-2011 08:09 PM

That shareholder sounded like a big fucking mark.

Raven Reaper 04-29-2011 09:05 PM

TNA isn't important enough for WWE to buy, get real. It would actually lower WWE's image to own that company. It's history is flawed and shit. They fucked themselves from the start by being a B-Rate show compared to WWE.

Exactly. It's like the pot and the Kettle case there.

Tape library would be the only thing worth anything, but I don't think even WWE's DVD guys can do anything with TNA's terrible production.

For historic purposes if nothing else.

Take a Sting DVD, for example. With the TNA library, they have about 5 more years in addition to his WCW stuff.

A Cruiserweight DVD could include X Division matches.

Plus it would add more to documentaries, just because they'd have more footage.

More footage to own is always a good thing as long as they have something to do with it, and with so many media projects on the horizon for WWE, including their network, the TNA library would be, if nothing else, a good thing to have.

chrisat928 04-30-2011 12:00 AM

I was talking more about the knack of TNA's camera work at missing big spots, looking right at guys blading, etc.

Mr. Nerfect 04-30-2011 12:01 AM

I think the WWE would love to get their hands on TNA's tape library and some of the talent there. I mean, say what you want about WWE's attitude towards tag teams, but if the WWE got their hands on Beer Money and The Motor City Machine Guns, I think we'd see some great tag team action on WWE TV. And the WWE doesn't need to put ANY creative energy into it. Bonus!

The idea of the WWE branching out and owning other companies without the WWE banner being plastered everywhere is certainly an interesting one. Imagine if Vince bought ROH, didn't really do anything to change the way it was run, except maybe lending a top star to them here or there -- you'd essentially have a farm league with a different sort of fanbase. Just Vince controlling more of the market.

I don't see the Carters EVER selling TNA to Vince McMahon and the WWE...
