Rey Mysterio looked better when he first debuted in WWE

He wasn't so fat back then.

Plus he doesn't wear those contacts anymore.

Got too comfortable

Discuss the WWE evolution of Rey Mysterio (2002-present)

I knew this was a The Naitch thread before I even opened it.

Lock Jaw 06-14-2011 04:59 PM

I'm in the minority, but I still really like Rey Mysterio.

Guy connects with the people like no one else currently active can. He is consistently in good/decent feuds, and while he may not be as good as he was, he can still go in the ring.

Rammsteinmad 06-14-2011 05:03 PM

What Lock Jaw said.

When I see a Mysterio match hyped I groan but then once it actually starts I don't tend to mind his matches. I think it's just his stale entrance which winds me up. Get something new.

Triple Naitch 06-14-2011 05:17 PM

It's called getting older.

DLVH84 06-14-2011 05:37 PM

I agree that Rey was better when he first arrived in WWE, but like Triple Naitch says, age plays a part in his body changing, plus he's been wrestling since he was 14, so he's bound to have some wear and tear over the years.

BigDaddyCool 06-14-2011 05:38 PM

He doesn't he got all of those ugly tats since then too.

The Naitch 06-14-2011 05:40 PM

his original theme was more badass

Have any of you seen Naitch lately?

He has really let himself go, his tits sag, he's bald...WTF

He looked so much better in 1972

Disscuss the evolution of Flair...

Rey isn't fat, he's just not super ripped. WWE probably told him to get bigger so he took roids, then they told him to stop taking roids and his current body is the result.

stultiloquy 06-15-2011 03:07 AM

Seems to me that for the past couple years he's been cruising along based on tenure and his image.

Granted - he's been wrestling for a long time, and all those years of flying around the ring haven't done his body any favors.
However, every time I see one of his matches he opts for a plain body splash or leg-drop instead of something more exciting.

I'm sure he'll stick around so long as the kids keep buying his masks, but he needs something to inject some life into his repertoire.

Pretty much what I wanted to say.

While that's true, I've always loved this one the most:

<iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YUWsEUSoxmc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Mis-labled, by the way... "Flying Fury" was the theme he used after this one.

Rock Bottom 06-15-2011 08:52 AM

Not to say this isn't a valid point you make, but you have to look at Mysterio's opponent(s) in that particular match/era. Those two could probably have a solid match at the snap of a finger.

Mysterio works with a lot of 'traditional' wrestlers now, his style has adapted a bit. But yes, I agree with the notion that he's getting a bit older. 619's and shit never really thrilled me all that much but everything said, I still think he's a solid guy with a decent amount of gas in the tank.

Kane Knight 06-15-2011 12:44 PM

Old guy in a safer era wrestles safer?

CSL 06-15-2011 12:47 PM

Rey Mysterio is outstanding. Possibly the best wrestler of the last 10 years in terms of consistent match quality outside of maybe HBK.

Fignuts 06-15-2011 12:50 PM

God, I know.

Who would of thought that getting older and having multiple serious injuries would affect someone's performance.

When someone's had as many knee surgeries as he's had, it's hard to inject life into anything you do. He does appear to be the cruiserweight version of a Hulk Hogan but it's not like he's a total loss.

Thank god! Some real respect for the man around here.

First of all Rey is still a fairly young, he's only 36. He's the last of the great breed in WWE that came from WCW (not counting Jericho cause he's not under contract).

Rey can have a great match with anyone, I really don't understand anyone who hates or dislikes him. I would think you'd have not seem him live before if you really dislike him.

Kalyx triaD 06-15-2011 08:51 PM

Age is a motherfucker. Most of you cats should be so lucky to move like does now, even subtracting 8-10yrs off your ass.

I, for one, am utterly shocked.

Rey's not fairly young for an athlete. Especially one who's had a lot of high risk years. Sure, he's not in a "real" sport, but he's been a constant performer, including days as a hardcore wrestler and effectively a stuntman. No combination of the above is good for longevity, which is why you see athletes and performer retire so early relative to others. Hell, it was only a couple years ago people were talking about Batista being too old to be a franchise, and he wasn't even 40 at the time. Nor did he have anything resembling the strain of Rey's career.

36 isn't ancient, but he's past the "spring chicken" stage for a wrestler, sports star, or other high performance occupation.

And I mean, yeah, some wrestlers wrestle til they're 104 (Flai), but that doesn't change much.

MoFo 06-15-2011 11:02 PM

I love him, his feud v Jericho a few yrs back is one of my faves ever.

Sting is a Master of Disguise though. Pulled the same stunt on the nWo back in the day.

THIS. Plus, I'd just like to add that his match with Punk at Capitol Punishment is probably the undercard match I'm looking forward to most Sunday.
