15 Years Later: The nWo Forms

15 years ago, on July 7, 1996, one of the most important turns in wrestling occurred, and in turn formed one of the most famous, as well as infamous groups in Pro Wrestling History, the new World order.

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3EAbDyBu0DU?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3EAbDyBu0DU?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></object>

What if Hogan wasn't the third man? Was Hogan the best choice?

Also, what is the nWo's legacy? Was it good, bad or maybe both for the industry? Whose side is he on? Who were the best/worst members and moments of the nWo?

Discuss the nWo and Hogan's heel turn in general in here.

CSL 07-07-2011 10:41 PM

The first few weeks/months/a year of Nitro leading up to and after the formation of the nWo is still the greatest period of wrestling in television history, beats anything from the Attitude era, from the late 80's (my favourite era) etc. And I was always a 'WWF fan'.

screech 07-07-2011 10:45 PM

One of the most shocking heel turns for sure, if not the most.

screech 07-07-2011 10:47 PM

I'll always be a fan of the nWo, despite the "spinoff" factions and ridiculous number of members. Awesome idea that took wrestling to new heights.

screech 07-07-2011 10:49 PM

Felt a little Providence Peep-ish with that last sentence, but couldn't think of any other way to put it.

SuperSlim 07-07-2011 10:58 PM

Hogan turning cemented it. It made him relevant again and it made the group that much stronger cause now they have the top guy and turned him. Nobody else could have pulled off the third man better than Hogan.

NwO will continue to live on as one of the biggest, best and worst storylines. Only worst cause it went on forever when it needed to stop. But leading up to it and that night... the best thing done. Only thing that rivals that in WCW is the Sting/Hogan buildup to Starrcade.

Outsiders were the best members of nWo. They just worked too well together.

LOL I forgot about Tony Schiavone's sign off of that PPV. Tremendous. Schiavone for all the shit he gets really did a wonderful job creating an atmosphere of panic and chaos on every show that year.

VSG 07-07-2011 11:49 PM

Biggest regret of my wrestling life was to never know WCW existed till after it went down and got bought by Vince.

this made my night haha i miss shit like this nwo ftw

Shisen Kopf 07-08-2011 12:10 AM

That was pretty cool. If the WWE were smart, they'd do something similar with Cena because like Hogan in 1996 he is so stale and cheesy. nWo was super awesome sports entertainment. But...I gotta go with DX over them though.

CSL 07-08-2011 12:17 AM

first Nitro after Hogan turned was opened with a quick recap and hype job for the 2nd hour that would ft. Hogan from Schiavone and Zbysko before 10-12 minutes of Rey/Malenko. Glorious

Razzamajazz 07-08-2011 12:17 AM

the kids at my school talking about the nwo in late 96 were a big part of me getting into rasslin

CSL 07-08-2011 12:20 AM

going to fill this thread with chronological nWo videos tomorrow like the big fat nWo mark that I am

Supreme Olajuwon 07-08-2011 12:45 AM

Scotty Riggs plays an excellent corpse.

Aaronp43 07-08-2011 12:51 AM

NWO was one of the best groups ever that is what made watching wrestling so fun

HBPunk 07-08-2011 01:03 AM

The Hogan turn was fucking magic, the next few months were great, the theme song was awesome but thats it.

DX > nWo anyway

MVP 07-08-2011 11:44 AM

Hogan was the right man to lead the nWo. Like SuperSlim said, it made him relevant again because Hulkamania had long been stale, and fans started to cheer for him again even though he would rip the audience.

Anybody Thrilla 07-08-2011 12:06 PM

All I can think to say right now is "Buff Bagwell".

Rammsteinmad 07-08-2011 01:21 PM

Was a complete mark back in the day, so I always hated the NWO (including the 2000 version). But looking back, no doubt they changed the industry and blah blah blah it's all been said before.

corywards 07-08-2011 02:03 PM

anybody watched that best of Nitro yet? it's 95% nWo, 2% Goldberg and 3% 4 Horeseman/DDP/Sting

anyway, nWo was the shit in 96. they fell off when they started adding the entire fucking roster in.

this is followed by a Steiners/Nasty Boys promo ft. Scott calling Knobbs 'fatso' and talking about how he respects their "wrestling ability" (lol) which in turn is followed by a hype VP for the soon to debut Glacier :'(

Well said Naitch but was there anybody else in WCW besides those guys?!

Lock Jaw 07-08-2011 03:10 PM

What about Raven?

corywards 07-08-2011 03:12 PM

ok HBPunk its been cute, wtf is a Naitch?

HBPunk 07-08-2011 03:14 PM

a naitch was a terrible gimmick some tit(ahem) had on here. What about raven?!

CSL 07-08-2011 03:28 PM

still watching that Nitro, love the way they sold the angle throughout the entire show, with "reports" of a black limo pulling up in the back, Bischoff being worried about the show being open air/at Disney because some kids might get hurt if shit kicks off, everybodies promos mentioning it, cutting to shots of the limo, Brain not initially being worried because of the size of the roster etc, outstanding

CSL 07-08-2011 03:38 PM

One of the best moments in wrestling especially with how legitimately angry the crowd was at Hogan when he turned. Hogan's heel turn might have been the best of all time with how shocked and then riot-like the crowd became during the whole incident.

NwO Wolf Pak was my favorite version with NwO 2000 being led by Jarret as the worst.

NwO ended up being both good and bad with the good being the short term boost in popularity of WCW and forcing the WWF to develop new stars since all of the older stars had jumped to WCW.

The bad being that the main events was still dominated by the same older stars and the NwO was pushed too strong with no real equal on the WCW. Also the lack of WCW to push any younger talent besides Goldberg until it was too late.

Sixx 07-08-2011 04:03 PM

Of course Hogan was the best third man choice.

Otherwise it might've been just another few-month stable that people forget.

CSL 07-08-2011 04:33 PM

2nd Nitro after the turn. First 2 minutes of the first vid is Hall and Nash covering the WCW letters on the set with sheets that have 'NWO' on them. 2nd vid is the closing segment/the 'birth' of the New World Order.

Steveviscious89 07-08-2011 04:40 PM

Absolutely Hogan was the right man for the job.....I have been watching old Nitro's from before, during, and after the formation of the nWo, and Hogan was actually getting booed most of the time before he left for a couple months before the heel turn. It was the right call and pretty decent timing. Plus, this ushered in the era of WCW where more real characters were being used.

I will say though that the first few months of the nWo were a pretty fragile time because Hogan didn't have all of his act together right away went it first started. I watched his first match as Hollywood with the Giant and he didn't really have any moves or special taunts yet for being Hollywood, he just kinda walked to the ring and did the heel thing during the match. The ball really got rolling after Halloween Havoc though.

The nWo was the first major faction in wrestling to pose a threat to an entire company, and it will probably be the last. There's no way this can be done again to the same reaction it got. The nWo did not hurt WCW in the end...it was the shortsightedness of its management.

MoFo 07-08-2011 04:42 PM

Heenan ruined the whole thing by saying "whos side is he on"...before that nobody would of even considered uber face Hogan siding with the bad guys. Shame on him.

Wolfpac's music was the greatest thing ever btw.

CSL 07-08-2011 07:53 PM

3rd ep after the turn, 1st vid Sting/Luger/Savage promo, Hall and Nash fuck with the production guys/truck, hinting at a 4th guy. Also has glorious Glacier VP and the legendary homoerotic VP with Jim Powers, Alex Wright and Renegade. 2nd vid was a quick Savage, Luger, Sting promo about Hogan/nWo to close the show

4th ep, when it started to get really great. 1st vid has footage of Hall and Nash jumping Sting in the parking lot on WCW Saturday Night from the week before about 2/3 mins in. 2nd is the first "the following announcement has been paid for by the New World Order. 3rd and 4th vids are the amazing segment that launched everything with Jimmy Hart running into a match to get help, Rey getting lawndarted by Nash, Heenan's "shoot", Savage on the limo, faces and heels together, the corpse of Scotty Riggs and brilliant allusions to a 4th man/making it a focal point

so many good matches that were given time on these shows, Benoit/Eddie, Rey/Malenko, Eddie/Psychosis, Benoit/Alex Wright, Flair/Jim Powers, Savage/Regal, Chavo/Malenko and a bunch of others ft. Harlem Heat, Kidman, Sting etc and that's only in 5 weeks of TV

CSL 07-08-2011 09:40 PM

5th ep. 1st vid is the opening of the show, shows 4 empty seats in the front row and WCW wrestlers acting as security for other WCW wrestlers, bonus entrance for a tag title match ft. Robert Gibson's manic boss-eye. 2nd vid has Bischoff and Brain "missing" from their spot on the 2nd hour, Luger and Sting going to the 'mystery limo' and a great little Savage promo about Hogan. 3rd is the Horseman destroying Booty Man/Beefcake because of his 'links' to Hogan, a Horseman promo, Kimberley Page's ass looking oustanding and more Beefcake beating. 4th (about halfway through) has a paid announcement and Sting and Luger in the production truck because of it.

Most of Outsiders/Sting & Luger ft. Nick Patrick first helping the nWo and Hogan/Giant from Hog Wild (hot finish). First time somebody was sprayed, first spraying of the belt, first time Hogan wrestled in black/Hollywood gear, teasing unveiling the 4th man. Best things about the whole thing though might be the culmination of Bobby Heenan's gradual slide into complete drunkeness on commentary after drinking throughout the entire broadcast including full on swaying whilst on camera at the end and Schiavone and Dusty's completely ridiculous outfits at the end.
