Frankie would win.

IC Champion 07-10-2011 06:47 PM

Melandez wouldn't even beat Jim Miller, IMO.

Eh... I think if Frankie could take Gil down early and often he would win via decision. Otherwise I believe Gilbert would smash him and take it by TKO.

IC Champion 07-10-2011 07:35 PM

I don't really see him smashing Edgar, Gil's been crushing cans for the last 3 years. Though he did crush the last one in impressive fashion.

IC Champion 07-10-2011 07:37 PM

And his best wins are over other guys from Japan who it turn have beaten mostly unranked oppenants.

Next Big Thing 07-10-2011 07:41 PM

Aoki and Kawajiri are both consensus top 10 155ers across the board. I wouldn't exactly call them cans.

IC Champion 07-10-2011 07:47 PM

Who have they beaten though? The best win between them is Kawjiri's win over Eddie Alvarez way back in 2008. They fight in Japan against the likes of Rich Clementi, come on.

but seriously though. Maybe Gil is tough enough to beat him, but his competition hasnt shown anyone that.

Aoki is tough, but hes not the greatest striker, and hes not allowed to wear those pants which made it very hard for him to lock his submissions up. Gil just took him down and layed on him.

IC Champion 07-10-2011 07:56 PM

And by no means am I calling Aoki or Kawajiri cans, just to be clear, I just think they are a little overranked, and have to consider level of competetion.

Next Big Thing 07-10-2011 08:18 PM

If we employ your logic, Eddie Alvarez wouldn't be a top 10 fighter at 155 because he fights in Bellator against the likes of Roger Huerta. Yet, if you went up to anyone who truly follows MMA and told them that they'd laugh in your face.

Hell, if we use that logic then Alistair Overeem has no business being in the top 10 as a heavyweight since most of his wins came in Japan against the likes of Todd Duffee and Mark Hunt. He's overranked then right?

While we're using that logic, Wanderlei Silva should be remembered mostly as a can smasher too since the vast majority of his wins were in Japan against Japanese fighters people have never heard of. Is Wanderlei's career overrated?

Prior to losing these past two, people were saying Fedor was the number one heavyweight in the world. Who had he beaten during that stretch of '05 to '09 though? Matt Lindland? Hong Man Choi? Wasn't Fedor overrated during that period then?

IC Champion 07-10-2011 08:28 PM

Overeem might not be a top 10 HW, other than Werdum he hasn't beaten one of note in a long time.

Fedor was number one largly because he was unbeaten for 10 years, and the weakness of the HW division.

And Wanderlei did crush cans. He had also had beaten other legit opponents. We aslo have the benefit of hindsight in his case since his career is coming to a close. And really he could be used on the other side of the argument, in that once he faced better, UFC competetion, he didn't fair so well. But that was probably more age and mileage.

We are one step from using integers to figure out who would win in a fight between Superman and Batman
