Five Stars
For the first time since Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker at In Your House: Bad Blood, a match has received ***** in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Dave Meltzer gave ***** to CM Punk vs. John Cena. Again, this is the first time since 1997 that Meltzer has rated a match this highly.
It would’ve been better with Jim Ross calling it. Good ol’ JR calling Punk/Cena would’ve been amazing. “PUNK KICKS OUT!” |
Quote:
The match had everything, it was brutal in places and had finesse elsewhere. I think in terms of the story and emotion these two guys played out, 5 stars might not even be enough. You might think this is hyperbole, but let's be fair. I don't think this match will ever be topped in our lifetime. So Kelly Kelly and Brie Bella, I applaud you on such an achievement. May this feud continue. |
Now he adds the last line. Some people.
It's changed again, what in the hell is going on?
No 5 stars for Taker/HBK at Mania 25? Or one of the Jericho/HBK matches? Or Jericho/Mysterio? Or...you get the point.
dave meltzer is still relevant?
To some people stuck in the 80's.
So
John Cena in a 5 star match. Who would have thought it?
This thread is QUITE incorrect.
http://wrestlingclique.com/wwe-discu...r-matches.html 9/11/05 AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe vs. Christopher Daniels (TNA Unbreakable 2005) 10/16/04 Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk 10/1/05 Samoa Joe vs. Kenta Kobashi 10/31/98 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi 6/11/99 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi 10/23/99 Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama vs. Mitsuharu Misawa & Yoshinari Ogawa 3/1/03 Kenta Kobashi vs. Mitsuharu Misawa 7/10/04 Kenta Kobashi vs. Jun Akiyama |
talking about WWE. And the list is missing the ROH tag match with CIMA and the other Jap guys
How the Taker/HBK matches didnt get 5 Stars is out of comprehension.
I cant wait for Cena to accept the Slammy Award for best match only to have Punk interupt via satellite on a megaphone..
though they'll probably have dropped the angle by december. |

I can agree with the rating. I hadn't enjoyed a wwe match that much since RVD/Cena ONS '06. There were a few botches and misfires but the electricity of the crowd more than made up for it. As awesome as the HBK/Taker match was, knowing the ending did kind of hurt it for me.
Meltzer is shit. I refuse to believe neither Taker HBK match was 5 stars and all that Jap shit was.
Knowing the Ending shouldnt count, since its a fake fucking match.
All that should matter is what happens between the bells. |
Quote:
Also, the "jap shit" on his list is all pretty quality stuff. Not really arguing that HBK vs Taker shouldn't be on there, or that it should... Personally, I enjoyed the matches. Probably in my top 10, definitely in top 25... Who needs a rating? |
Im going to have to watch this, because I find it incredibly difficult to believe that Cena could ever possibly be in a match rated 5 stars.
So does this mean that John Cena is the best wrestler in the WWE? I think it does.

Seems to me that Cena is the only active wrestler in the WWE with a 5 star match on his resume. Looks like he's the best.
i feel Orton and Christian have had a few stellar matches this year..
5 star matches? No? Good day then.
Quote:
Wait, what? Seriously though, not only does it take the two guys in the ring to pull off a great match, they also have to be given the opportunity. Most guys aren't given enough time to make a match "great." A lot of guys wouldn't know what to do with the time if it was given to them. |
The stars don't lie, folks.
anyone else think orton and christian's matches have been stellar of late?
Wait, so if Eddie Guerrero could wrestle a bowl of pudding to a 5* match, but not John Cena, but CM Punk can wrestle CM Punk to a 5* match, what does it all mean?

All I see is Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi. That is all.
Really? Cause there's like 70 matches listed. Might wanna check your browser settings.
I don't have a huge problem with the list. Add Taker vs. Michaels WM25 and its pretty legit.
I've watched so much wrestling I've started to forget what and when matches were '5 star.' I do agree with the Jericho vs. Mysterio nomination. The one where Jericho tore off the mask at the finish. Maybe the Cena vs. Michaels 1 hour match. I also thought that the first Christian vs. Orton match from this year was pretty legit, but maybe that's just because its fresh in my mind and maybe it doesn't hold up to the others. |
Also for those hating on the 'Japs'...
Those matches deserve to be on the list no matter how you qualify a '5 star' match. In action, fan reaction, drawing power, ratings they hold up to the WWE matches. If anything I have a problem with the ROH and TNA matches that were SO GOOD that 800 people paid to see them. While at the same time Mitsuharu Misawa sold out the ~17,000 seat Budokan Hall a record 68 times in a row that he performed on. |
Nielson v sawa and Richards v Edwards should be five stars. Along with wgtt winningbthe titles match
So neither of the HBK/Undertaker WrestleMania matches got 5 stars?
...huh. |
i caught the last 20 minutes of the punk/cena match. i really wanted to know the ending, and i found myself getting slightly annoyed that it was taking so long.
i'll give the ending 5 stars. |
CM Punk hardly carried Cena. It was a joint effort in my opinion.
From what I know of Dave Meltzer, he is pretty negative in his reviews of matches. HBK-Taker from 1997 was pretty predictable so I don't think that's the reason why he hasn't given a WWE match a 5-star rating since. How do you not give five stars to matches like Hart/Austin at WM 13, the first and maybe even the 2nd Taker-Michaels WM matches, Rock-Austin at WM 17, Angle-HBK at WM 21, etc. |
