Star Wars Blu-Ray - Changes Announced

Quote:

For the upcoming Blu-Ray release of the Star Wars films, George Lucas has shat upon his own work - again.

If I learned anything from watching Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, it's that Darth Vader is corrupt. He is evil all the way to his mechanized core. Despite Vader's son entreating him to see the good inside him in Return of the Jedi, it is too late for him. That is, until Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith, is forced to watch his only son be tortured to death by the Emperor who corrupted him. There is no audible reaction, but Lord Vader is overcome by the man he used to be and suddenly rebels against his former master, tossing the frail body still emitting lightning into the Death Star core where it finally explodes. The silent, stoic, selfless act is Anakin Skywalker's last, all the more potent because of it required no dialogue.

Until now.

For the Blu-Ray release of all six films of bearing the name Star Wars coming out on September 15th, Mr. George Lucas has once again changed a few things. Loyal fans may remember the addition of plot and character changing images such as Greedo shooting first and young Hayden Christensen appearing as a ghost at the end of Jedi when Lucas reissued the Special Edition of his films.

The Blu-Rays change even more, the most egregious being Vader uttering, "No. NOOOOOO!" right before he betrays Emperor Palpatine. The video above shows the change, which was confirmed by a representative at LucasArts via email to the New York Times: "Yes - Darth says NO."

I get it. I get that Lucas can't help tinkering with his films. He must hate the backlash that the "NOOOOOOOO!" received from the end of Revenge of the Sith and he wants to make it work thematically by calling it back (forward?) in Jedi.

But come the fuck on, George. Please stop. You obviously don't understand how you made great films in the 70s & 80s if you keep making these changes. What's next? You add Jar Jar Binks to the cantina scene, or re-record Alec Guinness's dialogue in Star Wars to include midi-chlorians?

This further proves that Lucas only made the original Star Wars films by accident. I now officially regret pre-ordering the blu-ray sex-ology back in January. I was going to give the prequels another shot ... maybe they weren't as bad as I had thought ... well, screw that.
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Kane Knight 08-31-2011 06:30 PM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

...Actually, I don't give a shit since I wasn't buying this anyway.

Captain of Fun 08-31-2011 06:43 PM

I planned on buying it. This won't discourage me from still doing so, but the scene was definitely better sans dialogue.

Kalyx triaD 08-31-2011 06:47 PM

The Special Editions from years ago is all I need.

Lock Jaw 08-31-2011 06:47 PM

Is it so wrong to just want the films in their original freaking forms?!

LuigiD 08-31-2011 06:49 PM

Absurd to the fucking core.
Didn't he learn the lesson the first time with adding extra shit like this?

parkmania 08-31-2011 06:49 PM

His name really must be George Unneccessary Lucas.

Kalyx triaD 08-31-2011 07:25 PM

We still have those original versions, I think it was a 'big deal' a few years ago, just for the 'Greedo Shoots First' crowd.

#BROKEN Hasney 08-31-2011 07:31 PM

I think Empire needs a musical number or at least a montage.

RP 08-31-2011 07:38 PM

Han shot first!

Corporate CockSnogger 08-31-2011 07:39 PM

Biggs and Wedge need to be replaced with Jar Jar and Watto.

Chewbacca should probably get a slap bass solo at some point during A New Hope too.

G 08-31-2011 07:57 PM

jesus christ

We have them. On DVD. If you want anything better, wait until the next video disc technology is about to dominate. George will release them then.

Yes. He learned that he can sell a gajillion copies and that even most of the nerds who hate it will buy it.

But...But this is how he always imagined it!

...Forget the fact that the last TWO times he changed the series, he could have done this as well, so that excuse no longer holds up....

I really think the article was right in one sense. This sort of thing does demonstrate that the original series was a fluke.

Have you joined the douchequote crowd?

OH YES. Can it be right after Luke gets his hand cut off?

Also, we need a sex scene between Luke and Leia to really drive home the whole creepy brother/sister act.

Quoi?

LuigiD 08-31-2011 09:10 PM

Apparently one of the changes is that they made the Ewoks blink..

The blinking actually brings more life to them id say... i dunno i like it i guess

Droford 08-31-2011 10:24 PM

Im glad I never got into Star Wars. I havent even seen the last two prequels. I tried to watch the first one and couldnt.

I might rent them just to see how well the Blu Ray Transfer is..the HD versions shown on Spike TV that I catch here and there look pretty decent compared to the VHS version a long time ago..

I'm not saying this is a GOOD thing, but it really doesn't bother me. I barely noticed and I was looking for it.

The "No...NO!" Does kind of annoy me because it takes a rather poignant scene that relies on imagination and takes away all the subtext and need for imagination.

This...Doesn't really look all that problematic.

I just wish we could get the original editions in 5.1 surround. Or 7.1 if that's what Lucas does these days. I know it's not true to the original, but remixing the sound or remastering the picture has never been a problem for me.

D Mac 09-01-2011 01:57 AM

BIG FUCKING DEAL. So he added a little something. Jesus fucking Christ.

I'm excited about the Blu Rays and I will be buying.

Captain of Fun 09-01-2011 02:34 AM

I don't think anyone here is freaking out about it that bad, d-mac. Anyone who was planning on buying it still is.

That doesn't mean we can't comment on the changes.

Corporate CockSnogger 09-01-2011 09:00 AM

They've CGI'd a Dug into Jabba's Palace too. Not a big deal, but a bit pointless.

It really isn't that big of a deal. I just don't think it looks good. It's one of those things that bothers me because now I know its there. Otherwise I wouldn't give a shit. In fact, I didn't even remember if the Ewoks blinked or not in the original.

El Vaquero de Infierno 09-01-2011 10:35 AM

I have only ever liked the first two original films; the third was bearable. The prequels were bloody awful; I only watch them for Portman's midriff. I don't see the point of putting the "No! Noooo!" Spoils the scene.

Gonzo 09-01-2011 11:37 AM

The saddest part in all these films is when the Ewok loses his little buddy in the fight against the Empire in the last film.

You just spazzed out more than anyone else in the thread.

Also, you're so opening yourself up to a crack about your taste.

Nowhere Man 09-01-2011 04:19 PM

As stupid as the big 'NOOOOO' is, I'm really not all that upset. Mainly because I got the last DVD set, which contained the original theatrical cut of each movie with them. He can go on screwing around with his movies and cramming in more superfluous CGI bullshit to make the scenes cluttered and busy and milking the good will of his fans until the day he dies; I've got my Star Wars just the way I want it, which means I don't have to spend another penny on it, thank you very much.

Champion of Europa 09-01-2011 04:48 PM

But they didn't have the technology to have Darth say NOOOOO in 1988! This is how it was always envisioned.

parkmania 09-01-2011 06:02 PM

I bet it's not even James Earl Jones who does the "Nooooo!"...

A little late on that joke, bro.

I'm too self destructively selfish to read the jokes of others.

Now that's silly.

Upon further consideration, I don't think I will be buying this collection. Not because these changes outrage me enough to do so, but because this is a very familiar pattern, and I feel like an original theatrical version blu ray release is inevitable.

They know what they're doing. They know the fans will bitch and moan. They know they'll buy it anyway. And they know that if they release the original version a few years later, those same fans will shower them with hugs and kisses, and most importantly, money.

So I think I can wait a little while longer for Star Wars on Blu Ray.
